Our town's favorite marching band takes the stage for a free concert. This all-volunteer band was incorporated in 1893 and is celebrating their 121st year.

The band will present a concert with many types of music including two holiday selections. Our award winning Color Guard will present the Colors at the beginning of the concert.

FREE - Donations appreciated.

Utz Properties is sponsoring our concert and will have a Happy Hour set up beginning at 2:00 p.m. Come-out and talk with the Utz team and the Band Members.

"As public prekindergarten expands in New York City and other parts of the country, teachers face competing tensions: On the one hand, there’s new pressure to teach more challenging academic material at younger and younger ages.

On the other, there’s mounting concern about the wisdom of shoehorning kindergarten and even first-grade content into the preschool years. Today’s pre-K instructors, for instance, feel much more compelled to teach children their numbers up to 100 or how to begin sounding out words than they used to.

Increasingly, early education experts agree that the best solution is to follow Markarian’s model: Mold and challenge young minds, but do it through purposeful play.

That’s not as easy as it sounds.

“That kind of teaching is much more difficult, and it takes a lot of training,” said Deborah Stipek, a professor of education at Stanford University. It’s much easier to lecture and pass out worksheets or to let kids engage in nonpurposeful and disorganized play—simply ensuring “they don’t beat each other over the head with blocks,” she says. “Really effective teaching is both playful and organized.”"

The Republican victory wave might end up even larger by the time all the votes are counted.

Already Wednesday, Republicans seized control of the U.S. Senate with a minimum of 52 seats, added to their majority in the House and picked up governorships in deep-blue Democratic states such as Illinois, Maryland and Massachusetts.

And with races in Alaska and Virginia still unsettled and a runoff in Louisiana in December — and all three of those seats now held by Democrats — Republicans could add to their new majority in the Senate.

“The Republican Party is back with youth, with diversity, with women, and we’ve got a long way to go,” said Oregon Rep. Greg Walden, the House Republican campaign chairman, who called the gains “historic” and a referendum on President Barack Obama. “We’re back to a majority as big as any of us have seen in our lifetime.”"

On election night that “mole hill” turned out to be a mountain—of 76,000 votes and now to paraphrase 538, Anthony Brown has a 100 percent chance of being a spectator come inauguration day.

Larry Hogan’s message of fiscal restraint and generating a stagnant state economy resonated with voters, while Brown’s lackluster campaign focused on negativity and scare tactics—a losing strategy for a candidate with support a mile wide and an inch deep. Brown’s base stayed home, while Hogan’s showed up to the polls.

With a Republican Governor, and nine new GOP delegates the 2015 legislative session just got a whole lot more interesting.

Larry Hogan: The 62nd Governor of Maryland, not only won, he won convincingly—by 5 points. He won by doing something different. Three years ago he began preparing the ground for his campaign message three years ago through Change Maryland. There is no such thing as a morning after pill for election results. Life goes on. For a while the general public may have a short respite before the next cycle invades daily stresses and strains.

A question arises: Will the ship be righted? Another question is: Can the ship be straightened?

Maybe time has arrived to turn off news purveyors. Seems like the people really knew all the facts and took to heart that old admonition, enough is enough.

It’s easy as pie to figure out the trauma. The world is going to “Hell in a hand basket.” There is a “fiddler-n-chief” not even strumming pleasing strings. There have been an over-whelming number of do-nothings more interested in scribbling in coloring books, usually reserved for not-of-age youngsters. They are officially called senators.

Let’s go back to the first Tuesday of this month, two days ago. A big and good old dose of “Black Draught” struck, and, sort of, cleaned out the building on Constitution Avenue. It was an evacuant for those who like to call themselves progressives. This latter word supposedly is proof they are good people, but they don’t do good for the 50 states.

In Maryland, the governor’s mansion got a good brisk scouring, too...

"I've never been so ambivalent about a gubernatorial election," was the text message from a friend, a Democrat in Baltimore County. I'm pretty sure he voted for Brown, but he was not excited about it. There was a lot of that going around Tuesday.

Pardon my lack of glee, but I think you know the feeling. The polls say most of us are pretty unhappy with the direction of the country, with Congress and with the president.

I think I know what's eating us — the feeling that the country is not as exceptional as we thought it would be.

Going back 70 years, there was a belief in an American brand of exceptionalism and in eternal progress. This big, strong country saved the world in the middle of the 20th century. It came out of war full of brawn and bravado. The future looked endless and bright.

Many of us remain quite curious as to what is MD Gov.-elect Hogan's plan for dealing with the Democrat-controlled MD General Assembly?

Gov.-elect Hogan did witness from the inside the challenges that Gov. Ehrlich faced. That dynamic and the issue that Gov. Ehrlich played an active role in his own victimization early-on, were the subjects of a recent conversation, off-the-record, that I had with the Gov.-elect and I found his ideas and plans insightful, thoughtful - and well-articulated.We shall see... I remain quite intrigued and have ordered extra barrels of ink. This ought to be fascinating.

Collegiality among the conservative Democrats and Republicans who ran the state for decades and decades is certainly way over-due for a comeback. We can only hope.

Maryland Republicans made historic gains in Tuesday’s election.

Larry Hogan Jr. became just the third Republican elected governor in the past 50 years, winning by almost the same 51.5% margin and carrying almost the same number of counties as Gov. Bob Ehrlich, the last Republican chief executive 12 years ago.

Sen. Allan Kittleman became just the second Republican Howard County executive in its history, and Del. Steve Schuh, as expected, kept the Anne Arundel County executive office in GOP hands. On the Lower Shore, Bob Culver defeated Democrat Richard Pollitt, the first Wicomico County executive.

Republicans picked up nine seats in the House of Delegates and two in the state Senate. Hogan, 58, ran on a promise to curb state spending and cut taxes. He will become Maryland's second Republican governor in half a century, and will face a Democratic-controlled legislature that may not be willing to help him.

Brown conceded defeat shortly after midnight.

Hogan spokesman Adam Dubitsky acknowledged Maryland remains a Democratic stronghold but said voters wanted change.

"It's not a realignment. It's not turning a blue state red," Dubitsky said. "It's people who are tired of the last eight years."

A spokesman for the automaker said it was increasing its outreach to owners through social media and a new call center staffed with 72 employees dedicated to contacting those who have not scheduled repairs.

But even owners who requested repairs months ago have been waiting, with dealers managing wait-lists and dozens of drivers writing to federal regulators in recent weeks asking why it was taking so long. Some of them are also raising safety concerns about the drawn-out timetable, as a recent fatal accident here suggests."

The long timetable for the ignition switch repairs — the replacement parts had to be manufactured and the first repairs did not come until two months after the recall was announced in February — highlights a continuing problem with recalls. Even in highly publicized cases, the fix can be elusive, and while some owners remain ignorant of the issue, even those who try to act can be left vulnerable.

And it’s been two full years since the Nexus 10 came and quietly went. So, when Google announced the Goldilocks-sized, spec’d out Nexus 9, there was much anticipation.

But after a few days of playing with it, I am, well, a bit confused. This tablet clearly has the potential to be great, and yet, it isn’t. Not yet at least.

While I don’t feel like I’ve been able to spend enough time with the Nexus 9 to give it the full review treatment just yet, it seems appropriate to compare it to Apple’s similarly-sized and wildly-popular new tablet, the iPad Air 2. NINYR has mobilized the generosity of our community to meet the critical needs our low-income and at-risk neighbors face every day, in every season...housing, essential utilities, help working toward financial stability, and self-sufficiency.

HSP ANNOUNCES END TO HOLIDAY PROGRAM

Neighbors in Need Year Round will Continue; Holiday Program Ends Following this Season

Westminster, MD - As Carroll County's Community Action Agency, Human Services Programs of Carroll County, Inc. (HSP) is committed to improving the quality of life quality of at-risk and low-income Carroll County residents, by assisting with basic needs, advocacy and linkages to resources to enhance life skills.

As part of its outreach, in prior years, HSP's Neighbors in Need program matched families with adopters and provided a holiday shop filled with gifts and household goods for families not adopted by volunteers.

In 2012, HSP expanded the program to create "Neighbors in Need Year Round", to deliver vital resources and services not only during the holidays but throughout the entire year.

Following a critical analysis and evaluation of available resources, HSP has determined that Neighbors In Need Year Round will continue, but the holiday component will end after this season.

"This was a very difficult but necessary decision for our agency and our Board," explained Cindy Parr, HSP Executive Director. "The Holiday Program has served thousands of families for many years, but the continuous needs of our low-income and at-risk families, all year long, must be the priority for our agency."

This year, for the last time, HSP will provide the holiday component of Neighbors in Need Year Round in a modified version. HSP will again seek benefactors to adopt families for the holidays, which is an essential component of success for the program. Families not adopted, and who formerly visited the Holiday Shop, will instead pick up a package of gifts at a distribution center. Inventory stored from prior years will be assigned and distributed to families who are not adopted. Families will receive a letter with information stating the date, time and location for their gift bag pick-up.

"Our modified version will still provide our clients with gifts and goods," said Parr. "Volunteers are still greatly needed to assist us in this modified effort." Volunteer opportunities will be listed as a link on the HSP website.

Donations received from the Carroll County Times-sponsored "Holiday Hope" program will continue to be used for HSP's Neighbors In Need Year Round initiative. Members of the community who have previously collected gifts for the Holiday Shop should plan to provide these gifts to other organizations, or volunteer through HSP to adopt one or more families.

"Our mission is to provide a "hand up" for those who are struggling to maintain or achieve self- sufficiency," said Parr. "We believe that our limited resources, both financial and man-power, will be better used by focusing on our year-round assistance to more than 12,000 at risk residents."

States have abandoned electronic voting machines in droves, ensuring that most voters will be casting their ballots by hand on Election Day.

With many electronic voting machines more than a decade old, and states lacking the funding to repair or replace them, officials have opted to return to the pencil-and-paper voting that the new technology was supposed to replace.

Nearly 70 percent of voters will be casting ballots by hand on Tuesday, according to Pamela Smith, president of election watchdog Verified Voting."
