Democratic Advocate, March 25, 1899: Francis J. Englar, a well-known farmer hurt during tree work

A serious accident occurred near Linwood last Saturday afternoon.

Mr. Francis J. Englar, a well-known farmer, was lopping a tree in his yard, and fearing it would damage the adjacent dwelling in falling, he tied a rope to the top and attempted to pull it in an opposite direction.

As it was falling Mr. Englar slipped and fell, while a heavy branch struck and pinned him to the earth.

He was held in that position until assistance arrived, when he was extricated while in an unconscious condition. Medical aid was quickly summoned from Union Bridge, and everything done to alleviate the sufferer. His oldest son was also severely bruised.

Wall Street Journal – Karl Rove: 'The Road We've Traveled' With Obama

March 22, 2012

Three dismal years are spun into 17 minutes of fact-challenged campaign film.

This month, Barack Obama's re-election campaign released a 17-minute film, "The Road We've Traveled," that previews the Democratic general election narrative. Directed by Academy Award winner Davis Guggenheim and narrated by actor Tom Hanks, the film explores Mr. Obama's most important decisions.

Viewers are told Mr. Obama deserves re-election for restoring America to prosperity after a recession "as deep as anything . . . since the Great Depression." He accomplished this in part, so the film says, by bailing out the auto companies—deciding not to just "give the car companies" or "the UAW the money" but to force them to "work together" and "modernize the automobile industry." The president, we're told, also confronted "one of the most worrisome problems facing America . . . the cost of health care."

Abroad, Mr. Obama ended the Iraq war and, in the "ultimate test of leadership," Osama bin Laden was killed on his watch. The film heralds Mr. Obama as a leader committed to "tough decisions" and as someone who "would not dwell in blame" in the Oval Office.

Where to begin? Perhaps with the last statement: Mr. Obama has spent three years wallowing in blame. His culprits have ranged from his predecessor, to tsunamis and earthquakes, to ATMs, to Fox News, to yours truly. If you Google "Obama, Blame, Bush" and "Obama, Inherited," you'll get tens of millions of hits.

As for inheriting the worst economy since the Great Depression: Perhaps Mr. Obama has forgotten the Carter presidency, which featured double-digit inflation, double-digit interest rates, and high unemployment.

The film is riddled with other inaccuracies and misleading claims. For example, the United Auto Workers may not have gotten "money" in the bailout, but as an unsecured creditor, the union received a 17.5% ownership interest in General Motors and 55% of Chrysler, while the companies' bondholders got hosed…

Statements made by County Commissioners President Blaine Young online and during his radio show have Frederick County Teachers Association President Gary Brennan saying Young is using his position to mislead the public.

In an article on The Tentacle, a Frederick County news commentary website, Young wrote, "A teacher who started in our school system at a base salary of $40,000 in fiscal 2003, would today in fiscal 2012 be earning over $63,500."

Sarah Tressler: Houston Chronicle Society Writer By Day, Stripper By Night By Richard Connelly

Sarah Tressler: Houston Chronicle Society Writer By Day, Stripper By Night By Richard Connelly Mon., Mar. 26 2012

It sounds like a bad rom-com book and movie, which no doubt its author hopes it will be -- society reporter for a big-city newspaper by day, stripper by night.
That's apparently the life being led by Sarah Tressler, who began writing society stuff for the Houston Chronicle after Douglas Britt left the paper to begin his own very odd double life.
Tressler blogsFacebooks and tweets about her life as an "angry stripper." It's all pretty much what you'd expect -- writing in the style that really, really wants to be described as "fearless" and "intelligent" and "funny" ... http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/2012/03/houston_chronicle_stripper.php

MarylandReporter.com - Daniel Menefee: House approves 7.5% natural gas tax, highest in the Marcellus Shale states

House approves 7.5% natural gas tax, highest in the Marcellus Shale states

By Daniel Menefee

House lawmakers Monday night passed  a 7.5% state severance tax on natural gas in a 82-51 vote, after the delegates on Saturday fended off an amendment from Del. Wendell Beitzel, R-Garrett, that would cap state and local taxes on natural gas extraction at 7.5% combined.

“The amendment would incorporate all severance taxes,” Beitzel said. “Local, county and state taxes together could not exceed 7.5%.”

Garrett County currently has a severance tax of 5.5%, which means the state could assess a severance tax of only 2% under Beitzel’s amendment. Allegany County’s severance tax of 7% would limit the state’s share to just 0.5%.

Higher rate needed to enforce regulations, proponents say

Del. Maggie McIntosh, D-Baltimore City, chair of the House Environmental Matters Committee and a sponsor of the severance tax, said applying different rates to every county would create administrative problems. She also said the 7.5% cap Beitzel proposed would not provide enough money for the regulatory oversight needed to protect human health and the environment... http://marylandreporter.com/2012/03/26/house-approves-7-5-natural-gas-tax-highest-in-the-marcellus-shale-states/

0-414 vote: House clobbers budget proposal based on Obama's 2013 plan

News from The Hill:

0-414 vote: House clobbers budget proposal based on Obama's 2013 plan

By Pete Kasperowicz

The House on Wednesday night unanimously rejected an alternative budget proposal based on President Obama's 2013 budget plan, dispatching it in a 0-414 rout.

The vote came just hours after the White House cast the pending vote as a political "gimmick," an apparent attempt to downplay what many expected to be an ugly-looking vote for the White House.

Time to Rethink Afghanistan by Kevin E. Dayhoff March 28, 2012 The Tentacle http://tinyurl.com/8a4emqm

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

So far, 2012 has not been a good year for the war in Afghanistan. Just last Monday a New York Times – CBS poll quantified what most Americans already know in their gut; support for the war is dropping sharply among both Democrats – and Republicans.

According to the New York Times’ article, “Support in U.S. for Afghan War Drops Sharply, Poll Finds,” “The survey (a copy of which may be accessed here,) found that more than two-thirds of those polled — 69 percent — thought that the United States should not be at war in Afghanistan. Just four months ago, 53 percent said that Americans should no longer be fighting in the conflict, more than a decade old.”

Inadvertently, the New York Times article explained part of the problem when it quoted “Michael E. O’Hanlon, a military expert at the Brookings Institution who is close to American commanders in Afghanistan, said that the opinion polls reflected a lack of awareness of the current policy…”

Yes, Mr. Hanlon, you are correct. Ten years of war and at this point in time, most Americans cannot tell you why we are still risking the lives of our young men and women… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5001
