Herald Tribune: #Orioles - Delivering on our promises By Laura Williams Monday, February 13, 2012

Signs of spring are everywhere in Sarasota County — just look for the birds. White pelicans flock to Sarasota Bay, snowbirds gather along U.S. 41, and the Baltimore Orioles swoop into Ed Smith Stadium.

Baseball spring training has arrived in Sarasota again.

This beloved sports ritual of springtime began in Sarasota in 1924, when Payne Park hosted the New York Giants. Today, Sarasota County welcomes more than 300 Orioles players, coaches and staff, as well as their families. They tell us they love Sarasota, and are heartened by the warm reception they receive here. They voice the ultimate compliment: "We feel at home."

The history of Baltimore baseball goes back 130 years.

By Kevin E. Dayhoff: Last Sunday, the Baltimore Orioles pitchers began the annual two-month spring training ritual at the Ed Smith Stadium Complex in Sarasota, Florida. When this writer arrived last Saturday in Sarasota, the temperatures were unseasonally warm, but certainly not as hot as Buck Showalter, the 55-year-old DeFuniak Springs Florida native and returning Orioles manager must be feeling.

Early in the morning last Sunday the Baltimore Orioles pitchers and catchers opened spring training at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota Florida under dark skies and a weather forecast of foreboding thunderstorms… http://westminster.patch.com/articles/orioles-see-changes-in-spring-training-in-sarasota

It’s a sure sign that – thankfully – spring weather is about to make its debut in Maryland.

Baseball has always been a favorite topic for many local history writers. And why not? Writing about baseball is fun. It has everything to warm the keyboard including summertime, arcane statistics, intrigue, colorful events, talent, family, and friends.

A baseball wife emerges from the dugout By Ann O'Neill, CNN

Dorothy Seymour Mills, shown outside her home in Naples, Florida, wrote three baseball histories with her late husband.

Dorothy Seymour Mills, shown outside her home in Naples, Florida, wrote three baseball histories with her late husband.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Harold and Dorothy Seymour wrote three seminal baseball history books together
  • She wrote much of the third book herself as he succumbed to Alzheimer's
  • For decades, he refused to share the credit with her or even acknowledge her role
  • Last summer, Oxford University Press agreed to give her credit as co-author

A baseball wife emerges from the dugout

By Ann O'Neill, CNN
February 25, 2011

Naples, Florida (CNN) -- Harold Seymour wrote baseball's first Bible, debunking some of the game's biggest myths.
He informed fans that Abner Doubleday didn't invent baseball in 1839 in Cooperstown, New York, (Footnote: There's evidence of games involving sticks, balls and bases being played in England in the 1700s.) and that Jackie Robinson wasn't the first black major league player. (That distinction more likely went to Moses Fleetwood Walker in the 1880s.)
Three books produced over a span of 30 years made Seymour the dean of baseball historians, and his journey from batboy to Ph.D. was celebrated as a success story. The study of America's national pastime at last seemed "grownup and worthwhile," observes John Thorn, a colleague who followed in his footsteps.
But after Seymour died in 1992, his wife, Dorothy, set about debunking one more myth: that he had researched and written all three books on his own... http://www.cnn.com/2011/LIVING/02/25/harold.dorothy.seymour.baseball/index.html?eref=rss_latest&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+rss/cnn_latest+(RSS:+Most+Recent)&utm_content=Twitter

Kevin Dayhoff - The Tentacle: Baltimore Oriole spring training - Mom, Apple Pie and Baseball

February 23, 2011

Mom, Apple Pie and Baseball
One of the sure signs that winter’s icy-cold grip will soon give way to warmer temperatures and spring flowers is the opening of Baltimore Orioles’ spring training.

Although some of my best childhood memories growing up in Carroll County came from listening to Orioles baseball on WTTR radio in Westminster – I’m not a rabid sports fan. In my family that job is held firmly by my wife. The only occasions in which I have ever heard my otherwise mild-mannered quiet wife, the child of generations of pastors, raise her voice, is when she watches sports.

As a matter of fact, my renewed interest in following the Baltimore sports teams, golf or other more esoteric sporting events such as the Le Tour de France, is a result of the entertaining thrill of watching my wife watch sports.

So, as you may now understand, no winter snowbird hiatus in Florida is complete without the obligatory stopover at the Ed Smith Stadium and sports complex in Sarasota.

And you may already be aware, there is something affirming, if not wonderfully distracting about baseball, especially when you put the national pastime into the context of our nation continuing to strike out with a malingering economic malaise that has been prolonged and exacerbated by the faltering economic errors and parade of foul balls emanating from Washington.

Baseball has always been a favorite topic for many history buffs. It has everything to warm the keyboard of a writer including summertime, arcane statistics, intrigue, and colorful characters and events... http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4246

The Orioles will play their first of 16 home spring training games in 2011 at the newly renovated Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota on Tuesday, March 1 against the Tampa Bay Rays. 2011 marks the second consecutive spring training for the Orioles in Sarasota, and the first in the newly renovated ballpark.

By the time Grapefruit League play begins in Sarasota, Ed Smith Stadium will have undergone extensive improvements which dramatically transforms the ballpark aesthetics and radically expands areas and amenities for fans. Enhancements to the fan experience include the addition of a two-story concourse with shaded views of the playing field; a new stucco façade with tile accents; refurbished stadium seats directly from Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore; additional private suites and party facilities; and a state-of-the-art audio/video system and video board. Improvements to the player facilities include new dugouts and bullpens; a new half field with AstroTurf; refurbished batting cages; and a practice field with the same dimensions as Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Baltimore will face nine different opponents at home during the 2011 spring campaign and will host the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers two times each at Ed Smith Stadium. The Minnesota Twins will make three trips to Sarasota and the Tampa Bay Rays, Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays will each make one visit.
