News from The Hill: Liberal lawmakers highlight Defense fraud report to influence supercommittee cuts

News from The Hill:

Liberal lawmakers highlight Defense fraud report to influence supercommittee cuts
By John T. Bennett
Liberal lawmakers will soon send the congressional deficit panel the details of a Pentagon report that shows defense firms over the last decade ripped off the military to the tune of $1.1 trillion, Democratic sources told The Hill.
Pro-military lawmakers from both parties have warned the supercommittee to avoid Pentagon spending cuts beyond the $350 billion ordered by the August debt deal.
But several Senate Democrats want the panel to keep in mind that dollars sent to the Pentagon are often lost to fraud and waste, even as some conservatives raise the possibility of retroactively exempting the Pentagon from the $600 billion cut that will be triggered if the supercommittee fails.

By: Examiner Editorial: Harry Reid shames the 'world's greatest deliberative body'

Washington Examiner Opinion

Harry Reid shames the 'world's greatest deliberative body'

For more than two centuries, the U.S. Senate has been known as the world's greatest deliberative body because of its rule ensuring the right of every senator to force consideration of, and a recorded vote on, any issue. The rule made the Senate unique as the world's only legislative entity in which the rights of majorities and minorities were equally protected. But 221 years of tradition and majestic debate mean nothing to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, who, for no better reason than avoiding an embarrassing vote, used procedural legerdemain to obliterate minority rights in the upper chamber.

No adults among the Occupy Wall Street protesters

I wouldn't think it would be worthwhile to draw attention to the Occupy Wall Street "movement," or its list of demands that wouldn't pass muster in an average kindergarten class. But if America's president and vice president choose to talk about it, and give it credibility, then it's news.

A Soviet spy in the White House invented 'stimulus spending'

Among the most amazing aspects of the accelerating American submission to the state are 1) how matter-of-fact we are in contemplating massive government interventions such as President Obama's latest stimulus "jobs" plan, and 2) how virtually no one notices the blatant Marxist overtones. When someone does, a la "Joe the Plumber" at the end of the 2008 campaign season, he is mocked off the stage.

Sunday Reflection: Judge orders EPA to pay up for malicious prosecution

By: Daniel J. Popeo
Last Friday, after five years of litigation, a federal judge in Louisiana ordered the U.S. government to pay $1.7 million in damages for maliciously prosecuting Hubert Vidrine, a used-oil processing plant manager.

News from The Hill By Alexander Bolton: Reid triggers nuclear option to change Senate rules and prohibit post-cloture filibusters

News from The Hill:

Reid triggers nuclear option to change Senate rules and prohibit post-cloture filibusters
By Alexander Bolton
In a shock development Thursday evening, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) triggered a rarely-used procedural option informally called the “nuclear option” to change the Senate rules.
The surprise move stunned Republicans, who did not expect Reid to bring heavy artillery to what had appeared to have been a hum-drum legislative knife fight.

If there's one place where what goes around comes around, it's the United States Senate. Goodwin Liu, the Berkeley law professor nominated by President Obama to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, is the latest to learn that lesson.
Liu's nomination was blocked by a Republican filibuster Thursday -- the first successful filibuster against a judicial nominee since Democrats stopped all 10 of George W. Bush's appeals court nominees from 2003 to 2005. Although no one back then could have predicted that today's fight would be about Liu, everyone knew it was going to happen sometime. Once Democrats crossed the line to filibuster those Bush nominees, you could bet Republicans would strike back. And now they have.

Testimony of David Simon before the Senate Committee “Hearing on the future of Journalism.”

Testimony of David Simon before the Senate Committee “Hearing on the future of Journalism.”

I just re-read David Simon’s May 6, 2009 testimony in from of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation – Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet: “Hearing on the Future of Journalism.”

It has some really precious moments and although it is now almost one-and-a-half years old, it is still a relevant read.

We are now into about the tenth-year of the great newspaper flu and it seems the patient remains on life-support and only gets better in fits and starts – one-step forward and two steps back at a time.

    [20090506_DavidSimonTestimonyFutureofJournalism]

For more on Mr. Simon’s analysis of the current state of the media, I Googled him - http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=David+Simon+newspapers – and found much more great reading…

Porn Star Won't Challenge Vitter for La. Senate

    Thursday, 15 Apr 2010 09:11 PM

Louisiana-born porn star Stormy Daniels announced Thursday that she will not run for U.S. Senate in her home state, ending a yearlong flirtation with politics that began as Republican incumbent Sen. David Vitter was working to overcome a sex scandal.

In an e-mailed statement, Daniels said she cannot afford a run for the Senate and, comparing herself to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, complained that the media never took her interest in the race seriously.

"To begin with, like Governor Palin, I have become a target of the cynical stalwarts of the status quo," Daniels said. "Simply because I did not fit in their mold of what an independent working woman should be, the media and political elite have sought to relegate my sense of civic responsibility to mere sideshow antics."

Daniels recently declared herself a convert to the GOP with a press release making light of news that the Republican National Committee had picked up a nearly $2,000 tab at a sex-themed California nightclub. But her political publicity has been handled by Democratic operative Brian Welsh.

If nothing else, a Daniels campaign for the Republican nomination would have been a constant reminder of the 2007 scandal that broke when Vitter's phone number appeared in the records of a Washington prostitution ring. Other than admitting a "serious sin," he has steadfastly refused to discuss the matter.

Meanwhile, his political career seems to have survived intact. He has raised plenty of campaign money while bashing the policies of President Barack Obama, who is not popular in the state.

SBA List Candidate Fund Endorses Sue Lowden for U.S. Senate

SBA List Candidate Fund Endorses Sue Lowden for U.S. Senate

Dannenfelser: 'Sue Lowden combines everything we are looking for: an articulate female spokesman with the courage to back it up with advocacy for the unborn and their mothers'

WASHINGTON, March 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- "The Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund is proud to endorse Sue Lowden for U.S. Senate in Nevada," said SBA List Candidate Fund President Marjorie Dannenfelser.

"Sue Lowden is exactly the type of authentic pro-life candidate Americans are hungry for, and that's why the SBA List Candidate Fund is prepared to highlight her race among a handful of priority contests in 2010.

"Right now there is a crying need for a pro-life woman's voice in the Senate and Sue Lowden is committed to being that voice. If elected, Sue Lowden has committed to be actively engaged in advancing legislation that protects the unborn and women. Sue combines everything we are looking for: an articulate female spokesman with the courage to back it up with advocacy for the unborn and women."

Sue Lowden's pro-life record spans back to her time as a Nevada state senator, where she championed a parental notification bill through committee to the floor of the Nevada State Senate.

The Nevada primary election is scheduled for June 8, 2010, where Lowden will face Danny Tarkanian and Sharron Angle.

In the general election, Sue Lowden will challenge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Despite running as a pro-life candidate, Senator Reid holds a 0% voting record with the National Right to Life Committee for the 111th Congress. In the recent healthcare debate, Reid refused to support authentic pro-life amendments. In the Fall of 2009, the Susan B. Anthony List spent $100,000 on commercials asking Harry Reid to keep abortion out of healthcare.

Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund endorsements are promoted to the organization's nationwide membership of over 280,000 Americans. The SBA List Candidate Fund endorses pro-life female candidates, as well as pro- life male candidates who run against female candidates in favor of abortion rights. During the 2008 election cycle, the Susan B. Anthony List bundled over $1 million in direct candidate contributions from its members.

The Susan B. Anthony List is a nationwide network of over 280,000 Americans, residing in all 50 states, dedicated to mobilizing, advancing, and representing pro-life women in politics. Its connected Candidate Fund increases the percentage of pro-life women in the political process.
