Heavy snow surpassing forecasts, with ice still ahead - baltimoresun.com

Snowfall tops 6 inches in some areas, significantly more than forecast

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/weather/weather-blog/bs-md-winter-weather-forecast-20131207,0,3336544.story

By Scott Dance and Michael Dresser, The Baltimore Sun 1:51 p.m. EST, December 8, 2013

Several inches of snow had fallen across much of the Baltimore area by midday Sunday, with as much as 5-7 inches in some spots, with ice still ahead as a winter storm that has traveled across the country packed more of a punch in Maryland than forecasters expected.

While a maximum of about 3 inches had been expected, 6 inches or more were measured across parts of Carroll, Baltimore and Harford counties with several inches still to the south. The snow was quickly covering roadways, prompting highway crews to urge motorists to stay home as they fight to keep up with the pace of the snowfall."

REISTERSTOWN, MD June 12, 2013– With forecasters predicting a high risk for severe weather over the next two days, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to be prepared for strong storms that might affect the area. Although much of Maryland has a chance of thundershowers today, the National Weather Service says the greatest risk for severe weather in the state will be on Thursday.

            Residents are reminded to:

·                 Make sure cell phones and other portable devices are fully charged and consider purchasing and charging spare batteries.

·                 Have a disaster supply kit with bottled water, non-perishable food (with a hand-operated can opener), a first aid kit, portable radio and flashlight with extra batteries, toiletries, special items needed for pets or infants, prescription medicine, a change of clothes and bedding. The kit will be helpful if you have to evacuate quickly or if you are without power.

·                 Keep some cash available in case ATM machines are not available.

·                 Have copies of important documents such as home and property insurance policies, driver’s licenses, health insurance cards, etc.
·                 Know where you would meet other members of your family if your home is not safe.

·                 Remember that in the immediate aftermath of a serious event, wireless communications systems may be overloaded. Text family members to let them know you are safe so voice calls for emergency agencies can go through.

Follow local weather forecasts in your area for the next two days to learn if there are any warnings in your specific area and take appropriate actions.

Possible Tornado touches down in the Woodbine area of
southern Carroll County By Kevin Dayhoff, June 10, 2013
http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/2013/06/possible-tornado-touches-down-in.html

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that a
severe weather event took place in southern Carroll County at approximately
7:15 this evening.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Lt. David P. Stem addressed
reports of a possible tornado in an e-mail earlier this evening. “At this time,
we are unable to confirm that there was a tornado that touched down,” wrote
Stem.

“According to our emergency communication center, at
approximately 7:15 pm, Doppler radar indicated that a tornado could soon be or
was on the ground in the Woodbine area however at this time, we have had no reports
of damage that would indicate that is the case…”

According to Stem, “There is however major flooding on low
lying roadways and we are asking citizens to use caution when traveling on
roadways, especially if there is water running across them.  Drivers should never cross or attempt to
cross a flooded roadway. Sheriff’s units, as available, are responding to
flooded roadways.”

Eagle Archive: There is no predicting the weather in March

Eagle Archive: There is no predicting the weather in March by Kevin E. Dayhoff, March 10, 2013 http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0310-20130306,0,2962803.story

Hopefully the snowfall earlier in the week is this winter’s last gasp. We always seem so surprised when it snows in March, however, throughout Carroll County history some of our most significant winter storms have occurred during March.

The weather in the month of March in Carroll County is just plain unpredictable at its best; although the troubled month may be best described by the diagnosis of multiple personality disorder.

Among the biggest ‘spring blizzards’ in Carroll County history; on March 29-30, 1942 it snowed 22.0 inches and on March 15-18, 1892, it snowed 16.0 inches.

Other notable March snowfalls include the Ash Wednesday storm of March 6-8, 1962 when around 10 inches of snow fell at Friendship Airport, now known as BWI.

Many can still remember the storm that hit the area on March 12-14, 1993 when 12 inches of snow fell in the Carroll County area.

In March of 1902, the county was still reeling from the mess caused by the winter storm of Feb. 21, 1902, when Carroll County experienced one of the worst ice storms to ever hit the area. The now out-of-print American Sentinel newspaper hailed it as “The Great Sleet Storm,” according to research by local historian – and MD State Senator, Joe Getty… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0310-20130306,0,2962803.story

Sandy – The Historic Unwelcome Guest

Sandy – The Historic Unwelcome Guest

The last thing we expected, in a year full of the unexpected, was a late tropical storm, with a friendly moniker like Hurricane Sandy, making an unwanted appearance on our calendar.

For too many, it was an uninvited guest in our living room. For others, it came and went, leaving us in the dark, with fewer trees, and in return, left behind plenty of water – as in water, water everywhere.

You know, in Maryland, once the trees have begun to show-off their fall season colorful display, the days have started to get shorter, and the temperature leaves a nip in the air, one begins to think snow, ice, and winter – but not hurricanes.

We often associate hurricane season with unpleasant weather events that ruin the best of plans during the summer and fall months of June through November. Those of us who enjoy visiting the south during the summer have learned, in some instances the hard way, to keep an eye on the weather. Nothing can ruin a rare vacation – or even a writing assignment – worse than coordinating your schedule with the random vagaries of a hurricane.

We usually endure the wrath of hurricanes and tropical storms during the months of July and September. Once Labor Day comes and goes, we usually think that we’re in the clear; well, except for “nor’easters,” storms that resemble ‘winter-hurricanes,’ that form in the southeast and travel north.

The storm quickly caught the eye of many seasoned hurricane scientists who dubbed it Frankenstorm… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5433

Maryland Department of the Environment announced today that a drought "watch" is in effect for the Eastern region of Maryland

Drought Watch In Effect For Eastern Maryland

Maryland Department of the Environment announced today that a drought "watch" is in effect for the Eastern region of Maryland

.

BALTIMORE, MD (April 13, 2012) – The Maryland Department of the Environment announced today that a drought "watch" is in effect for the Eastern region of Maryland, where precipitation levels have been below normal in recent months.

During a drought watch, MDE increases oversight of water supply conditions and encourages citizens to become more aware of their water use and to conserve water. Local water systems can require water-use restrictions at any time due to local conditions, but MDE is not at this time aware of any local jurisdictions implementing voluntary or mandatory restrictions. The status for all other regions of Maryland is "normal."

MDE monitors precipitation, stream flow, groundwater levels and reservoir storage to determine the drought status for each of six regions of the state. If two or more of the four indicators for a region reach "watch," "warning," or "emergency" levels, then the region is placed in the corresponding status.

Recommended actions have been established for each drought status. Actions recommended for watch stage include:

Public awareness and education

MDE and water systems provide the public with water conservation tips

Water systems aggressively pursue leak detection

Reduced water usage for main flushing, street flushing and park irrigation

Homeowners, government facilities, businesses and industry should reduce water use for irrigation

During the watch stage, MDE will evaluate drought indicators bi-weekly.

The Eastern region includes Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline, Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester counties. Monitoring shows that groundwater levels and streamflow in the region are below normal. Rainfall in the Eastern region in the first three months of 2012 is on average about 4.3 inches below normal, or about 60 percent of normal.

Precipitation has been relatively low for the past three months in the Central and Southern regions of the state, and some groundwater levels and streamflows are below normal. Conditions in all regions could worsen if sufficient rainfall is not received in the next month.

Reservoirs continue to have sufficient reserves and are expected to remain normal.

Conserving water is important at any time, but it becomes especially important during extended periods of reduced rainfall. MDE provides tips on water conservation for households, business and industry and water utilities.

Tips for households include:
  • Install low-consumption toilets and low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators
  • Repair leaks
  • Don’t let the faucet flow while brushing your teeth or shaving
  • Operate washing machines and dishwashers only when fully loaded
  • Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways, steps and sidewalks
  • Limit watering to gardens and newly planted lawns and landscaped areas
  • Water your garden during the coolest part of the day, and not on windy days
