In the last week three celebrities have died. Ed McMahon, Farah Fawcet and now Michael Jackson. I was briefly saddened by all of those deaths, especially Farah’s because of her long, painful battle with cancer. She was definitely a female icon - I mean her hairstyle defined a generation of women.

Along the same lines, Michael Jackson defined an entire genre of music - he was thrust into the spotlight at the age of 6 and never got a break from it.

McMahon was a regular on the Tonight Show, host of Star Search and those publisher clearing house things - he was a household name.

So I'm not surprised the world is saddened by their deaths.

However, I am surprised that Michael Jackson's death has taken over every single news outlet in the country (I'm not so sure about elsewhere) and I just read on CNN that his death took over the internet yesterday as well, and almost took it out.

I just can't really comprehend it. There are people out there in this world actually mourning the loss of these people. Having memorials, putting flowers on their Walk of Fame stars and all sorts of other things and it just weirds me out.

There are more important things to worry about today, like how to get the GOP to get their heads out of their asses and admit there is no such thing as the "sanctity of marriage," (thank you S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford and all you other philandering politicians) while the rest of us try to get more women, minorities and gay men/women into public office.

Can someone please explain to me why anyone uses the Baltimore public transportation system?

I’m just asking…

It seems that there is no end to the parade of stories about violence and crime on Baltimore public transportation…

Believe – it; it’s unbelievable.

How much more will Baltimore deteriorate before something is done? The city’s reputation for crime, violence, corruption, and ineptitude is no longer national – anecdotal accounts indicate that it may be global.

And it is sad. I used to love to go to Baltimore for its restaurants, museums, theater, movies and historic places… And I miss visiting Baltimore…

Democratic strategist James Carville has sent out an e-mail for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee warning Democrats that the GOP could rebound in 2010 and take over the Senate just as they did in 1994.

In 1994, Carville writes, "things were a lot like they are today. A young, exciting president. Big majorities in Congress. We figured we'd have plenty of time to build the America we wanted.

"You know what happened next. Fifty-four new Republicans elected in the House. Eight new Republicans elected in the Senate. Our moment of opportunity had passed.

"Republicans are hoping 2010 is the new 1994. But heck, they don't need eight new senators. If they gain just one or two, it's going to be that much easier for them to scuttle vital legislation."

Carroll County’s comprehensive master plan draft, called Pathways, is causing some confusion for both residents and elected officials.

The biggest issues about the plan include lack of explanations about the proposed rezoning of some residential land, especially in Taylorsville, to an employment campus classification as well as land rezoned south of I-70 in Mount Airy for industrial and commercial use.

The two rezoning changes catching fire are both turning about 1,700 acres of residential land in Taylorsville’s routes 26 and 27 intersection to employment campus land and another being land south of I-70 in Mount Airy at the headwaters of the Patapsco River.

Krebs (Del. Susan Krebs (R-9B) of Eldersburg) said …

“There were planners to came to the Mount Airy and Eldersburg libraries a month ago and were suppose to answer questions,” she said. “The planners at the Eldersburg Library were not from the area; they had no idea to the questions they were asked. And you stood in line to ask a question about the map, they did not give you the proposal and you had to look it up online first.”

Krebs said it’s time for the county to step back and answer the unresolved questions correctly.

I am resident of Carroll who happens to think that the Pathways plan is an excellent way forward for the county. I was not sure at first about it because of all the noise being made by some people - but I attended the meetings and listened to all the negative stuff. But apart from just saying that they did not like the plan - there was little substance in what was said beyond anger and noise. I did not speak and neither did others who agree with the plan because it did not seem to be the place to do so. The shouting and ruckus at the Century High meeting really put me off. I was not going to stand up and be shouted down - because that is all that would have happened. They did not seem to be in the mood to listen to an alternative view. But I made a point of reading the entire plan - I am not sure how many of those who disagree have actually read it all because they do not seem to understand that there is ample consideration of conservation in it. In fact, if the plan is followed we will have more conservation land in Carroll than we did before - granted it will not be in the same areas. I live in one of the contested areas and have no problem with the idea of a business park. It is a far better alternative than having residences and business springing up in every corner of the county in a hap hazard way without any planning.

Carroll countians want top ranked schools, low taxes and no industry nearby.

It is a case of pick two out of three. Half the County budget is for education, and our taxable base is 80 percent residential. The only way to lower taxes is to get some industrial development to increase the proportion of industry and hence decrease the proportion of residential tax base.

To put it another way, so long as most real estate taxes are paid by residences, the taxes on me and thee will be high compared to other counties.

This is not news, although the friends of the residential developers like to obscure that fact. Complaining about higher taxes won't help. Industrial development will.

The county shows foresight in proposing to rezone land from agricultural to industrial in large chunks and in suitable locations. But after the rezoning county officials need to consider worst-case analysis.

Although he defiantly denies being a Cylon, or that he knows anything about Hera Agathon, the 12 Colonies, or Renoir; Kevin Dayhoff claims to know a great deal about the “first Cylon War,” only because he is an economic historian.

Nonetheless, he bids you a warm welcome to the machine.

He has been known to have a great deal of affection for toasters, and possesses and unblinking eye, yet he refuses to shed a teardrop or be a writer that is dissolved, or be boxed-in about likes and dislikes; and has a certain fondness for Betty Blue, Easter Eggs and thinks Beatrice Dalle is pretty killer.

Known to be synchronized in his own head, ten years after, 50,000 miles beneath his brain, he seems to enjoy extending upon his immediate environment a projection of his day dreams which he claims will change the appearance of his immediate environment.

Nevertheless, at the end of a long day, it does appear that some deterioration seems to result in his appearance, which causes some folks to wonder…

And that’s the final scene as the white cat asks “Are you writing?”

1953 : Workers assemble first Corvette in Flint, Michigan

On this day in 1953, workers at a Chevrolet plant in Flint, Michigan, assemble the first Corvette, a two-seater sports car that would become an American icon. The first completed production car rolled off the assembly line two days later, one of just 300 Corvettes made that year.

The idea for the Corvette originated with General Motors' pioneering designer Harley J. Earl, who in 1951 began developing plans for a low-cost American sports car that could compete with Europe’s MGs, Jaguars and Ferraris. The project was eventually code-named "Opel." In January 1953, GM debuted the Corvette concept car at its Motorama auto show at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. It featured a fiberglass body and a six-cylinder engine and according to GM, was named for the "trim, fleet naval vessel that performed heroic escort and patrol duties during World War II." The Corvette was a big hit with the public at Motorama and GM soon put the roadster into production.

On June 30, 1953, the first Corvette came off the production line in Flint. It was hand-assembled and featured a Polo White exterior and red interior, two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, a wraparound windshield, whitewall tires and detachable plastic curtains instead of side windows. The earliest Corvettes were designed to be opened from the inside and lacked exterior door handles. Other components included a clock, cigarette lighter and red warning light that activated when the parking brake was applied--a new feature at the time. The car carried an initial price tag of $3,490 and could go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 11 or 12 seconds, then considered a fairly average speed.

In 1954, the Corvette went into mass production at a Chevy plant in St. Louis, Missouri. Sales were lackluster in the beginning and GM considered discontinuing the line. However, rival company Ford had introduced the two-seater Thunderbird around the same time and GM did not want to be seen bowing to the competition. Another critical development in the Corvette's survival came in 1955, when it was equipped with the more powerful V-8 engine. Its performance and appeal steadily improved after that and it went on to earn the nickname "America's sports car" and become ingrained in pop culture through multiple references in movies, television and music.
