I do not really enjoy being a wet blanket with respect of Occupy Wall Street. The country is in a very bad way, and the protesters are trying to call attention to very real problems. To the extent that they can prove that a constituency for economic reform exists, they might shift the political process somewhat, although I suspect the White House feels sure it has that constituency in its pocket already and need not worry too much about it. Yet I continue to feel that the rhetoric of many protesters has an all-too familiar ring, and that the state of the nation has led them into the same dead end that too many of my contemporaries encountered more than forty years ago: a belief that nothing less than a complete transformation of a hopelessly evil society will suffice. Since such a transformation is neither possible nor really desirable, I worry that the results of OWS, like those of the "student revolution" of my youth, will be largely negative.

A year from 2012 election, U.S. electorate is frustrated

One year out from the 2012 election, President Obama faces the most difficult reelection environment of any White House incumbent in two decades. But public disaffection with the party and a muddled battle for the GOP nomination leave open the possibility that Republicans will not be able to capitalize on the conditions that have put the president on the defensive. These conclusions are drawn from a Post-ABC News poll and from interviews with officials, strategists and advisers.

Geographically, the election will be won or lost in roughly a dozen states, beginning with most of those Obama took away from the Republicans in his first election but including a handful of traditional battlegrounds that may be more competitive than in 2008. Independents, as well as the coalition of African Americans, Latinos, younger voters and suburbanites that backed Obama in 2008, will again be key.

Peter Plant is the gallery guest at Off Track Art for November and December. Peter is a studio and plein air artist who has worked in a traditional style of painting in acrylics. Over the past two years however, he has branched out and experimented with a variety of mixed media techniques which have broadened his experience in both studio and plein air work. His studio work has included wet-in-wet acrylics on watercolor paper, images drawn with markers, as well as poured and splattered paint backgrounds. Plant’s goal is to explore media and techniques that enhance the creative experience while presenting realistic images to the viewer. Pearlescent inks, Sharpie markers, watercolor pencils, and colored pencils have all found their way into his art.

Gail Elwell, a partner of Off Track Art, shows her collage series, “52 Weeks.” This exhibit at Birdie’s Cafe on Main Street in Westminster, runs November through December. Gail worked steadily for an entire year creating a collage every week, hence the exhibit’s title.
