“Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.” Psalm 90: 1-2 NIV

July 2, 2008

On Monday, June 30, 2008 Pastor Sarah Dorrance picked up the keys to the
Taylorsville United Methodist Church.

She began her first day in the office on Tuesday, July 1, 2008.

In her message to the congregation of Taylorsville United Methodist Church on the church’s web site, she noted:

This is a time of change at Taylorsville UMC.

Rev. Stephen White is retiring as of June 30th, and Rev. Sarah B. Dorrance will begin as pastor on July 1st, 2008.

It is the wish and desire of both pastors to make this transition as smooth and seamless as possible.

Take time to celebrate what each person in this church has done. Take time to celebrate the wonderful heritage that both pastors and congregation accomplished at Taylorsville—take time to thank God for all that God has done in the life of this congregation, and all that God will do in the future!

Rev. Dorrance was in international marketing prior to going into the ministry.

She graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary with a M. Div this past May and was be commissioned as a Probationary Elder of the Baltimore-Washington Conference.

Rev. Dorrance has a passion for mission, teaching, preaching and discipleship in the local church.

She has served on the Latino Advisory Board for the Frederick District, has been an intern at Faithpoint UMC, and was instrumental in bringing her home church, Calvary UMC in Mt. Airy, to a new level of serving in the mission field.

She has also directed the youth choir at Calvary UMC for the past 10 years. Rev. Dorrance recently co-authored a book titled “Reclaiming the Wesleyan Tradition: John Wesley’s sermons for Today.”

She is very excited about receiving her first full-time appointment at Taylorsville UMC.

Taylorsville United Methodist Church, in Mt. Airy, has been serving the people of western Carroll County for more than 125 years. The average worship attendance is 79.

The church’s United Methodist Men and Women serve the community and world through outreach programs, work projects, and mission activities. Church activities also include Vacation Bible School, a mother-daughter banquet, Christmas bazaar, Bible study groups, Friday Family Game Nite, and an annual church picnic.

The congregation supports missionaries in Alaska, Turkey, China and India. Taylorsville is continuing to search for ways in which they can reach out to the community to invite people to experience God’s love through the ministry of the church.

The Lords of Annapolis

Happy 4th of July. One of the main reasons we sought our independence from England was taxes. The only thing is – that this long after we won our independence – we are still fighting over taxes.

Speculation on Tar and Feathers

The main focus of the oil crisis has now shifted to people called speculators and fund managers. As a liberal Democrat, who reads the Wall Street Journal (now there’s an oxymoron), I have endeavored to learn how they fit into the equation.

Recyclying’s Flip Side – Part 2

In yesterday’s column we reviewed some basic information on recycling. We determined that while tossing our plastics in the blue recycling bin may make us feel as if we are saving the planet, it may be we are using substantial resources to produce products we buy back which are no longer recyclable.

Recycling’s Flip Side – Part 1
Farrell Keough
Is recycling a misnomer? In other words, do we actually recycle our waste and containers; or do we just transport them to someone else and feel good about our actions?

Rick Weldon, whose column normally appears in this space every Monday, is suffering from a major malady of the modern era. His computer crashed; and, like most of us, he was unable to fix it himself. Unfortunately for all who enjoy his work, particularly his political commentary, his column on the governor’s race in 2010 is still locked inside his computer. It will appear next week if the stars align correctly.

19480702 Democratic Advocate: Teacher Fowble Slugged By Hitch-Hiker

Teacher Fowble Slugged By Hitch-Hiker

Democratic Advocate, July 2, 1948.

Fred Fowble, Westminster High School teacher found unconscious early Saturday on the Old Frederick road near Hollofield, Howard county, told police he was assaulted by a young "hitchhiker."

The assailant, who fled in his victim's automobile, struck Fowble on the head shortly after being picked up near the Patapsco River bridge. Fowble, thrown from the car, was found lying in the roadway by Andrew Huppler, a passing motorist, about 2 a.m.

Huppler took the unconscious man to the Ellicott City Police Station.

When he was revived, Fowble gave Patrolman Charles Linthicum an account of the assault. Fowble said he was returning to his home in Westminster from Baltimore when the youth, standing near the bridge, solicited a ride.

After picking up the "hitch-hiker," Fowble reported he had driven about a quarter of a mile when he was struck on the head and lost consciousness. In addition to stealing his car, the assailant robbed him of his cash. Fowble was treated by a doctor in Ellicott City for a head wound before being returned to his home at 60 Court street.

Linnavolikogu

Chairman of the Town Council of Paide Mr.
Ants Hiiemaa (Faction of Civic Union of Fatherland and Social Democrats)

Valimised on läbi ja nüüd me peame õigustama oma valijate usaldust. Seetõttu pean ma enda ja volinike tähtsaimaks ülesandeks valimislubaduste alusel sündinud koalitsioonileppe täitmist.

Volikogu eduka tegutsemise eeldus on hästi tunda linnakodanike vajadusi. Seetõttu pean vajalikuks pidevat koostööd erinevate huvigruppidega. Tuleb muuta regulaarseks volikogu kohtumised noorte, eakate ja teiste linnakodanikega, tuleb moodustada ettevõtjate ümarlaud jne. Pean tähtsaks väärtustada kodanike omaalgatust ja korraldada arutelusid.

Minu arvates on volikogu ülesanne eelkõige linna arengusuundade väljatöötamine. Volinike üheks tähtsamaks tööks saab linna uue arengukava väljatöötamine, mille tegemisse tuleb kaasata võimalikult palju linnakodanikke. Paide tähtsus peab Kesk-Eesti linnana suurenema.

19410701 first TV Ad and 1961 TV commercial promotion - Television Tape

First TV Ad and 1961 Television commercial promotion - Television Tape

Most of my readers know that I am a big fan of the art of videos, advertising and television commercials. It was on this date – July 1, 1941 that what is believed to be the first television commercial aired in the United States.

It was right before a baseball between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies on July 1, 1941, the first television advertisement was broadcast in the United States.

At exactly 2:29 in the afternoon, the New York City NBC affiliate, WNBT, aired a 20-second spot for the Bulova Watch Company. Bulova paid $9 for the ad. According to a Bulova history account, the ad simply displayed a Bulova watch over a map of the U.S., with a voiceover of the company's slogan “America runs on Bulova time!” http://www.bulova.com/about/history.aspx

Then there was the matter of promoting – television advertising…

According to an article, “
Inside Production,” written by Walter Schoenknecht on January 8, 2007 for “TV Technology” magazine, this video is a copy of a “sales pitch [John Vrba] recorded in 1961 while he was Sales Manager at Los Angeles’ KTTV.”

19610000 Television Tape

The link for “
Inside Production” is here, http://www.televisiontape.tv/Story.html, and the article is a comprehensive - must read for folks who, like me, enjoy the art of advertizing, especially TV advertizing.

We owe Mr. Schoenknecht a great debt of gratitude for finding and saving this historic material. He wrote that he had “…found a box of cast-off 16mm films while I was a Communication Arts student decades ago…”

This video has something for everyone from techno-geeks, folks who study the science and art of advertising to historians to aficionados of early television.

Please enjoy – and thanks again to Mr. Schoenknecht.

20080701 Tribune Company Press Release: Jana Gavin named senior director/business development for Tribune Interactive

TRIBUNE COMPANY PRESS RELEASE

July 1, 2008

The Noise You Can’t Ignore Grows Louder in Chicago

(Please see my
Dayhoff Media disclosures)

CHICAGO, July 1, 2008 -- Wikipedia says, “The Jacor name is retired from broadcasting,” but the roaring bark of Jacor’s mascot bulldog is being heard loud and clear in Chicago. That bark added more bite this week when Tribune Interactive President Marc Chase named Jana Gavin senior director/business development for Tribune Interactive.

Gavin is part of a growing team of Jacor veterans now working for Tribune, which includes Chase, Sean Compton (senior vice president/programming for Tribune Broadcasting), Steve Gable (chief technology officer), Russ Gilbert (vice president/digital innovation) and Special Consultant Roy Laughlin. Sam Zell owned Jacor Communications and Randy Michaels, Tribune chief operating officer, ran the media corporation from 1993 to 1999.

During that time, Michaels and his Jacor warriors dominated radio by having the best-programmed and highly-rated stations, and built Jacor into a vastly-valued and widely-respected company by focusing on its audience, employees and investors. Michaels became chief executive officer of Clear Channel Radio when it acquired Jacor in 1999; the transaction provided a healthy profit for Jacor’s shareholders.

“When I hear Chase, Compton, and now Jana Gavin referred to as ‘Clear Channel’ people, I laugh. Media veterans know they are Jacor!” said Kim Johnson, Tribune Interactive’s senior vice president/local sales (who never worked for Jacor, but wishes she did). “Jacor people are known for being fierce competitors and playing to win, so teaming up with the great staff already at Tribune gives us a significant leg up on the rest of the market. Sales people know it’s easier to sell media products with the largest and most-loyal audiences. And Jana knows how to make the cash register ring from her time at Jacor as vice president/non-traditional revenue, where she was responsible for an $85 million annual budget.”

Gavin’s appointment is effective immediately. She will be based in Columbus, Ohio.

Democratic Advocate: Md Sales Tax First Went Into Effect on July 1, 1947

Sales Tax — Who likes taxes? Nobody!

Democratic Advocate, March 28, 1947.

Gov. Lane does not like taxes either, but as long as you have colleges to take your money and plenty of it through your money you are to have taxes. But we do need money for our public schools, for our medical centers and surely for road building.

The sales tax will go into effect July 1, 1947. The opposition to the sales taxes by our merchants was 100 per cent and feel very blue over the outcome. But suppose you were to support the Republican grab bill that was framed but failed to appear on the Senate floor. It certainly was a lot more unfair.

Democratic Advocate, March 28, 1947.

I finally got around to reading Mark Tapscott’s post from last Friday: Tapscott's Copy Desk: John McCain's three biggest problems - Himself, George Bush and history.

Tapscott's Copy Desk: John McCain's three biggest problems - Himself, George Bush and history.

From last Friday, June 27, 2008

Some folks are asking what I meant yesterday on MSNBC during an i
nterview with Chris Jansing when I said that presumptive GOP presidential nominee John McCain's "three biggest problems are John McCain, George Bush and history, and he's yet to effectively address any of the three."
