MSNBC SINKS TO NEW LOW: Doesn’t Show Race of Man Carrying Gun at Obama Rally

Special Guests - August 20, 2009

On Monday, at a VFW rally for Barack Obama in Arizona a black man made news on CNN when he showed up with an assault weapon and a pistol strapped to his shoulder and waist respectively.

At MSNBC guns in full view at an event where the president was speaking was newsworthy. However, the race of the man actually carrying them didn’t square with what they were reporting - that anti-Obama protesters are racists with itchy trigger fingers ready to go off half-cocked.

It certainly didn’t fit the paradigm of biased media outlets. Is that a sufficient reason to manipulate news footage to perpetuate that paradigm?

Is that what happened? The video shown clearly does not show the race of the man. Nor is his race identified by any of the three people discussing the issue.

In fact, Contessa Brewer at one point says, “Here you have a man of color in the presidency and white people showing up with guns strapped to their waste.” Click the link to view the segment and judge for yourself.

Majority in Post-ABC Poll Say Afghan War Not Worth Fighting

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

A majority of Americans now see the war in Afghanistan as not worth fighting and just a quarter say more U.S. troops should be sent to the country, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Most have confidence in the ability of the United States to meet its primary goals — defeating the Taliban, facilitating effective economic development and molding an honest and effective Afghan government — but very few say Thursday’s elections there are likely to produce such a government.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver remembered

Eunice Kennedy Shriver remembered for founding the Special Olympics

Sunday August 16, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff

Some folks have asked where they may find my tribute to Eunice Kennedy Shriver, “Shriver remembered for Special Olympics and also for a connection to Carroll that appeared my Carroll Eagle Archives column on Sunday August 16, 2009

So I thought what I would do is post the long version which is unedited to meet word limit…

Last Tuesday, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, died at a hospital on Cape Cod surrounded by several generations of her large family. She was 88 years old.

Inspired by her sister, Rosemary Kennedy, who was born mentally retarded, Shriver founded the Special Olympics in 1968 for persons with intellectual disabilities.

As a child, Rosemary and Eunice Kennedy are reported to have spent a great deal of time together swimming and sailing. Rosemary died in 2005.

Shriver earned a sociology degree from Stanford University in 1943 and subsequently worked as a social worker at a prison for women in Alderson, W. Va, and the juvenile courts system in Chicago, before she took over the philanthropic foundation named after her brother, Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., who had been killed fighting in WW II.

Throughout her lifetime received numerous awards for her work with children. In 1962, when no one spoke in public about the mentally handicapped, Shriver broke the ice and turned on the light on the plight of the handicapped.

It was then that she “revealed her sister's condition to the nation during her brother's presidency in a 1962 article for the Saturday Evening Post,” according to a number of historical accounts of Shriver’s incredible life of service to our nation.

A year earlier, in 1961, President Kennedy “signed a bill she championed to form the first President's Committee on Mental Retardation,” according to news accounts.

Shriver was the fifth of nine children in the family of Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy were two of her more famous brothers.

Many folks will also remember her as the mother of former NBC newswoman Maria Shriver; and the mother-in-law of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

She married R. Sargent Shriver, from Willis Street in Westminster, in 1953. Sargent is a member of the historic Shriver family in Carroll County, known as community, political and business leaders; whose heritage has been, in part, preserved by the Union Mills Homestead.

He later became President Kennedy’s first director of the Peace Corps. He was also Sen. George McGovern's running mate in 1972, and ran for president himself in 1976. It is reported that the couple were very close and that she was an integral part of her husband’s political career.

However, it is through the Special Olympics that she will live on through the ages.

She was the daughter of a millionaire, the sister of a president and a U.S. Senator, and the mother-in-law of a governor; however she is best known for her tireless lifelong commitment to the mentally handicapped – and the Special Olympics.

Tovia Smith said it best on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered:” Shriver “was born to one of America’s most powerful families but spent her life laboring for some of the least powerful.”

“The "anti-war" "left" was used by the Democratic Party. I like to call it the "anti-Republican

For the Left, war without Bush is not war at all By: Byron York Chief Political Correspondent August 18, 2009

Not too long ago, some observers worried that Barack Obama would come under increasing pressure from the Left to leave both Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, it seems those worries were unfounded. For many liberal activists, opposing the war was really about opposing George W. Bush. When Bush disappeared, so did their anti-war passion.

Columnist Robert D. Novak dies after battle with cancer

Robert D. Novak, who began covering Washington during the Eisenhower administration and later achieved fame as a columnist and television commentator, died in his home Tuesday morning after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 78.

A nationally syndicated columnist for 45 years, Novak wrote “Inside Report”—a reported column on the inner workings of Washington policy and politics—with Rowland Evans six days a week from 1963 until Evans’ retirement in 1993. For 15 years, Novak continued the column—thrice weekly—until a brain tumor forced his retirement in July 2008.

Cable television made Novak’s a familiar face nationwide. An early star at the nascent CNN in 1980, Novak was a fixture on the right at CNN’s Crossfire, and he relished his work as the executive producer of the Capital Gang.

Susan Ferrechio - Pelosi digs in on public option
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she will forge ahead with a health insurance bill that includes a robust government-run insurance plan, despite signals from Senate negotiators that they may exclude a government plan from legislation it is drafting.

Mark Tapscott - CBS News, AP report AARP losing thousands of members protesting group's Obamacare support

Earlier this month, I reported that a revolt was breaking out among AARP's 40-million members in response to the enthusiastic and extensive lobbying by the group's Washington leadership on behalf of Obamacare. Now, other media are beginning to notice and we are starting to get a trickle of numbers that hint at the magnitude of the outrage among AARP's members.

Julie Mason - Obama adopts tough talk on Afghan war
"Our new strategy has a clear mission and defined goals: To disrupt, dismantle and defeat al Qaeda and its extremist allies," Obama told the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Phoenix. "This will not be quick, nor easy, but we must never forget: This is not a war of choice, this is a war of necessity."

Kimberly Kagan - Afghan army and police forces must grow much larger
More U.S. troops are needed in Afghanistan in part because there are too few Afghan National Security Forces, and they are not yet effective enough to conduct counterinsurgency missions. The growing strength of the insurgency and the limitations on the ANSF create a security gap that only additional international forces will be able to fill over the coming few years.

U.S. unions aid anti-democratic forces in Latin America
Anti-democratic forces working to de-stabilize the new government in Honduras have attracted U.S. labor unions as allies in their cause.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), UNITE HERE, and the United Steelworkers (USW) have lined up behind Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega to express their support for Manuel Zelaya, the former president of Honduras

H.R.3200 - America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009

H.R.3200 - America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009

Slowly but surely copies of the controversial H.R.3200 - America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 are beginning to show up on the web.

I found a copy of it on the web site: http://www.opencongress.org/

It is just as voluminous as has been reported. All I will paste in this web site is the introduction and the table of contents…

Before I do that however, perhaps one good place to begin you own investigation of the proposed legislation is by reading, “Debunking Health Care Lies (by Reading the Bill) August 13, 2009 - by Donny Shaw http://www.opencongress.org/articles/view/1162-Debunking-Health-Care-Lies-by-Reading-the-Bill-

The introduction of Debunking Health Care Lies (by Reading the Bill) August 13, 2009 - by Donny Shaw, says:

With Congress preparing to vote on health care reform this fall, talk of what’s in the major House bill has been dominating the news and political blogs. Unfortunately, the public discourse about health care reform has been harmed by false claims, scare tactics, and lies.

At OpenCongress, we’ve had the official text of the House health care bill available online for a month for people to read and get the facts:
H.R. 3200 – America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009. Anyone can easily permalink and comment on any individual section of the full bill text. And in this debate, the facts matter — it’s imperative that as a nation we read the actual text of the bill and actively work to counter any misinformation about it. To be sure, it’s a long bill, and not easy to understand at first read. Some of the misinformation is intentional, and some is inadvertent. But whether you support or oppose this bill, we hope you agree that the misinformation surrounding it is harmful to the public debate and the formal legislative process on health care. In other words, news coverage and blog buzz and viral emails on the health care bill should refer to specific, citable sections of what the bill actually says — they must be reality-based.

We believe it is possible for every American to educate him or herself about what H.R. 3200 proposes as a major piece of federal legislation and how it would work in the context of the existing American health care system. More than that, we empower people to share these important facts with their friends and families, and to constructively contact their elected officials with their input. Towards these ends, we’ve put together this debunking of incorrect claims regarding H.R. 3200 by citing and linking to the empirically-verifiable sections of
the official bill text. This is not intended to be a comprehensive analysis of everything in H.R. 3200, but rather a focused look at five specific provisions under collective scrutiny. To be sure, there is much more proposed in this bill than can be summarized in this one blog post. For now, then, let’s fight misinformation and look at the facts together:

Aung San Suu Kyi left to pay the price for John Yettaw’s indiscretion

Richard Lloyd Parry: Analysis August 17, 2009

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article6798369.ece

First it was Bill Clinton in North Korea, escorting home two scared US journalists from the clutches of Kim Jong Il. Now, Senator Jim Webb returns from Burma with the hapless American eccentric, John Yettaw.

For a politician, there are few more glorious moments than jetting home from a despotic regime with imprisoned compatriots in tow. But the liberation of Mr Yettaw was the least important and interesting achievement of Mr Webb’s trip.

Whether you regard Mr Yettaw as a well-meaning buffoon or an arrogant busybody, he hardly deserved such a prompt and high-level intervention.
The ironies of his release this weekend are painful. In setting him free, the Burmese junta manages to project an image of magnanimity for cancelling a sentence out of all proportion to Mr Yettaw’s “crimes”. And, as he flies back to obscurity in Missouri, Aung San Suu Kyi and her two female companions are left to pay the price of his fecklessness.

[..]

For encouraging such a conversation, Senator Webb deserves credit.

Finding Lincoln at a flea market

Finding Lincoln at a flea market

A guy buys a box of old papers at a flea market. He’s a history buff, so he’s into that kind of thing. He gets the box home and sorts through it. Lo and behold, at the bottom of that stack is an envelope with Abraham Lincoln’s signature on it. Turns out, it could be the last thing President Lincoln ever signed.

The envelope says simply: “Let this man enter with this note. April 14, 1865. A. Lincoln.” From the Morning Journal of Northern Ohio:
