Is 99 weeks too long for unemployment benefits?

David Freddoso, Examiner Columnist

"If unemployment benefits last 99 weeks, and they are even mildly attractive next to a $10-per-hour job, then no rational actor would pick lettuce for less."

BAGHDAD -- The military said Tuesday that it has charged an Army intelligence analyst in connection with the leak of a controversial video and the downloading and transfer of classified State Department cables, in a case that is likely to further deter would-be whistleblowers.

The case against Pfc. Bradley Manning, 22, reflects the tough stance the Obama administration appears to be taking against the disclosure of classified information http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/06/AR2010070602330.html?wpisrc=nl_tech

W00t! sends Associated Press a bill for quoting its blog

W00t! sends Associated Press a bill for quoting its blog

When W00t! posted its delightful notice about being acquired by Amazon, it was picked up and re-run by blogs all over the net. Not wanting to miss out on the action, the Associated Press ran the story and the text, too.

One problem: the AP has previously told bloggers that quotations -- however brief -- should be licensed before publication. They even offer these licenses. For a small fee, AP will generously allow you to quote one of its articles on your blog (provided that you don't do so in a way that criticizes the AP, of course, and they reserve the right to take the quote back at any time).

So W00t! sent the AP a bill for $17.50 for the quotation: Oh, and find the bill here:

Carroll County celebrates the Fourth

Carroll County celebrates the Fourth

Carroll County celebrated the Fourth of July at the Carroll County Farm Museum.

As the temperatures soared in the 90s, the celebrations began at 12 noon at the Farm Museum, 500 S. Center St., Westminster, with music that included the U.S. Navy Band “Country Current,” Carroll Jazz Singers, Carroll County Cloggers, the Elderly Brothers Quartet; a mule-pulled wagon tour of the grounds, crafts, and food.

Later in the evening at 9:30 p.m, the skies over the Farm Museum pond lit-up to everyone’s delight as fireworks soared in to the night sky to celebrate the Fourth in a grand style.

Thousands jammed into the Farm Museum and the adjacent Agriculture Center grounds to view the show.

The Wisdom of “Silent Cal”

July 7, 2010 The Wisdom of “Silent Cal”

Kevin E. Dayhoff http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3849

(1923 photo of "Silent Cal" Calvin Coolidge by John Garo)

The Fourth of July has come and gone. The fireworks exclaimed its last hurrah along with the Ooos and Ahhhs. The remains of the day include a few partially eaten hot dogs, a half-bag of potato chips, and the sticky, syrupy goo that we can call Maryland’s heat and humidity that clung to your skin and followed you home.

The flag that flew proudly on the rickety pole attached to the front of the house like a patriotic necktie has been retired for the day.

For those who enjoy historical trivia, there may have been a mention that two of the framers of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, and his colleague in history, John Adams, both died on July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years after the signing the famous document we celebrate every year.

In my household, there are two celebrations that take place every 4th of July. There is a celebration of the excitement that we live in, what remains a somewhat, a free country. We have a moment of reflection for those who have gone before us so that we may continue to fight for our freedoms and, of course, a celebration of “Silent Cal Day.”

[...]

Now I can only be sure that you share my excitement at this point in time, and you feel a profound increase in your dopamine levels. Please understand that this is a normal reaction known as the “Coolidge Effect.”

However, before you feel a subsequent effect on your limbic system, get a grip on yourself and read on about this great man. Here: http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3849

Gregory Kane laments that he is going to miss Justice John Paul Stevens

Gregory Kane says: It's going to be hard to miss Justice Stevens and gives insight into the "the "penumbra" (interpretation) of the Constitution..."

By: GREGORY KANE Examiner Staff Writer July 1, 2010

"At least five Supreme Court justices understand what the Second Amendment says. The remaining four need a lesson in the meaning of liberty.Earlier this week the high court ruled that handgun bans like the one in Chicago are unconstitutional. Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel Alito said that the right to bear arms "applies equally to the federal government and the states.""

"Writing for the minority, Justice John Paul Stevens offered this whimper: "(this decision) could prove far more destructive -- quite literally -- to our nation's communities and to our constitutional structure."

[...]

"Those rights -- like, say, for instance, the right to own a handgun to defend your home and person -- Stevens would just as well see remain rooted so deeply in the "penumbra" of the Constitution that they will be all but forgotten. This penumbra business got started in 1964."

Examiner Columnist Gregory Kane: "But I do know what to say to the departing...":

Lara Logan, You Suck

June 28, 2010 By Matt Taibbi

Countess/WireImage

Lara Logan, come on down! You're the next guest on Hysterical Backstabbing Jealous Hackfest 2010!

I thought I'd seen everything when I read David Brooks saying out loud in a New York Times column that reporters should sit on damaging comments to save their sources from their own idiocy. But now we get CBS News Chief Foreign Correspondent Lara Logan slamming our own Michael Hastingson CNN's "Reliable Sources" program, agreeing that the Rolling Stone reporter violated an "unspoken agreement" that journalists are not supposed to "embarrass [the troops] by reporting insults and banter."

Anyone who wants to know why network television news hasn't mattered since the seventies just needs to check out this appearance by Logan. Here's CBS's chief foreign correspondent saying out loud on TV that when the man running a war that's killing thousands of young men and women every year steps on his own dick in front of a journalist, that journalist is supposed to eat the story so as not to embarrass the flag. And the part that really gets me is Logan bitching about how Hastings was dishonest to use human warmth and charm to build up enough of a rapport with his sources that they felt comfortable running their mouths off in front of him. According to Logan, that's sneaky — and journalists aren't supposed to be sneaky:

"What I find is the most telling thing about what Michael Hastings said in your interview is that he talked about his manner as pretending to build an illusion of trust and, you know, he's laid out there what his game is… That is exactly the kind of damaging type of attitude that makes it difficult for reporters who are genuine about what they do, who don't — I don't go around in my personal life pretending to be one thing and then being something else. I mean, I find it egregious that anyone would do that in their professional life."

To gain more insight into the left's thinking when they recently smeared the American military and why the job of beat reporters was made even more impossible by a hot dog looking for 15 minutes of fame at our expense: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/matt-taibbi/blogs/TaibbiData_May2010/122137/83512

Right Turn Cameras

From: mdconvention.org

http://mdconcon.wordpress.com/

Right Turn Cameras??

From the latest email that I get from PhantomALERT:

A single red light camera in Riverside, California issued $1 million worth of right-hand turn on red tickets in just one month.

The automated ticketing machine installed in March at Tyler Street at the entrance to the 91 Freeway has become the most productive of the city’s cameras and now accounts for half of the citations issued by Riverside’s vendor, Redflex Traffic Systems of Australia. The camera helped boost the grand total of citations mailed since January 2007 to 82,448 tickets worth $32,532,203. As in most California cities, Riverside’s program began with tickets issued to drivers primarily at locations where the yellow light provided insufficient warning. A 2001 report by the California State Auditor found that 77 percent of tickets in major cities were issued for split-second violations. This means that motorists who harmlessly entered the intersection a fraction of a second after the light turned red were photographed and sent a ticket. In fact, the trigger is so quick in Riverside that city documents recorded four instances early this year in which the camera generated a citation when one traffic signal facing the driver displayed a red light while a secondary signal still displayed the yellow light.

Boehner Video Hits Obama on Jobs, Oil Spin
GOP House Minority Leader John Boehner is striking back at President Barack Obama with a video that questions the president's leadership on key national issues. The YouTube video, titled “What About the Country, Mr. President?” is in response to Obama's speech in which he ripped into Boehner for telling a newspaper that a major banking overhaul bill is like "killing an ant with a nuclear weapon."
