Libyan Fighters Face Off: Snipers, Hand-to-hand Combat, and Rocket Fire

WISHTATA, Libya -- Libyan fighters launched a two-pronged assault Friday on one of the last towns to resist the country's new rulers, clashing with Moammar Gadhafi's supporters inside Bani Walid as a weeklong standoff dissolved into street-to-street battles, the revolutionary forces said.

September 9^th, 2011 Reception: Guest Artist Josh Ries

Josh Ries is our guest artist for September-October. Josh’s passion for glass was ignited the first time he encountered glassmaking on a college trip to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning NY.

He began classes and an apprenticeship at the Art of Fire Contemporary Glass Studio in Gaithersburg, MD. Josh has studied with such Masters as Gianni Toso, Ellio Quarisa, Josh Simpson, and Dante Marioni.

He loves studying new techniques such as traditional Venetian, English, and contemporary styles of working with glass. He also loves to share his knowledge of glass with others by helping teach classes at the Art of Fire and the Corning Museum of Glass Studio.

Josh’s work can be found in many galleries and exhibits around the country. He has also exhibited at the Renwick in Washington D.C., The American Craft Council show in Baltimore, and local venues such as the Carroll County Arts Council. He has received such recognition as the Mayors artist choice award, Ocean City MD, and the Rochester NY artist excellence award.

His addiction to glass continues as he creates art with his wife, Amanda, in his studio in Littlestown, PA. Each piece he creates employs age-old Venetian and English techniques to create unique modern art glass.

Tomorrow evening President Barack Obama will lay out his job creation proposals in a campaign address to a joint session of Congress. The president previewed his plans Monday in a Labor Day speech in Detroit.

In short, the president said his plan would be to hold the Republican Party accountable if conservatives do not support his plan. The plan? Oh, nevermind. What plan? There is no plan except to shift the blame to the Republicans for the abysmal jobs situation across America. Yup, that’s the plan.

Thirty-two months after President Obama promised his $820 billion economic stimulus would keep unemployment from rising above 8%, the Labor Departmentannounced today that the United States economy added zero jobs in August as the unemployment rate held steady at 9.1%.

According to CNBC, this is the first time since 1945 that the Labor Department reported zero monthly job growth....

Only about 43% of all jobs created by projects funded by the $787 billion federal stimulus billwent to people who were unemployed, according to a new study from the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.

The rest of the jobs, according to the study, went to people who were already employed elsewhere, were just out of college, or were not part of the labor force. Job-switchers got about 47% of all of the jobs created by the stimulus package, the study states.

Jones said this shows that the stimulus funds may have targeted some of the wrong kinds of projects. While billions of dollars went to "green" projects, for example, many of the people who can do that kind of work tend not to have problems finding jobs. Meanwhile, people who do not have college educations may have had fewer opportunities to find a stimulus-funded job they qualified for.
