Radios failed during Navy Yard attack, first responders say

News from The Hill:

Radios failed during Navy Yard attack, first responders say

By Kevin Bogardus

Radios for federal firefighters and police officers failed during Monday’s mass shooting at Washington’s Navy Yard, according to union representatives for first responders.

Union officials said police and firefighters resorted to using their cell phones and radios from D.C.’s emergency responders to communicate with each other during the attack.

Initially, officers found that their radios were working. But as they ventured deeper into the building where the shooting took place, their equipment stopped functioning.

“They had to use their cellphone to just call out and tell them what's going on,” said Anthony Meely, chairman of the Fraternal Order of Police Naval District Washington (NDW) Labor Committee.

Westminster celebrates diversity at Tristreet block party - baltimoresun.com:

"By Kevin Dayhoff, 3:45 p.m. EDT, September 17, 2013 http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/carroll/westminster/ph-tristreet-block-party-20130917,0,934631.story

Fully equipped with a spatula, sunglasses, hat and an apron, Darcel Harris was all smiles Sept. 15 as she answered questions, cooked hamburgers and hot dogs and helped coordinate activities for over 300 folks who attended the 11th annual Pennsylvania Avenue – Tristreet Association block party in Dutterer Family Park in Westminster.

The event included multi-cultural food dishes made by residents, local fruits and vegetables donated by local farmers, dancing, pie eating contests, and educational activities for children provided by the Westminster Police Department, the Carroll County NAACP and GROW Mission (God’s Regeneration of Westminster) – one of the many local grassroots community organizations in which Harris participates."

WTTR and McDaniel Split | The McDaniel Free Press

We were among many who were quite disappointed to learn that WTTR and McDaniel Split | The McDaniel Free Press

http://www.mcdanielfreepress.com/2013/09/16/wttr-and-mcdaniel-split/

We were then told to go to a radio site to get the game online... However, after going to the website, we were not able to find the game and were really disappointed...

Meanwhile it would be great if the college were to provide Wi-Fi at the new Gill Stadium... Just saying.

According to The McDaniel Free Press:

"Last week McDaniel College unveiled its new sports broadcasting service. This came with the shocking announcement that McDaniel College Green Terror football games would no longer be broadcast on WTTR radio 1470am as they have been for as long as most can remember.

In an interview, the college’s Athletic Director Paul Moyer explained that WTTR no longer wished to broadcast the games over the air but was willing to broadcast the games on their website. The college had already been planning to expand football game broadcasts to video this season with the completion of construction of Kenneth R. Gill Stadium, so the college decided they could better broadcast everything in-house. The new broadcast will no longer use Pack Network, the service they had been using the last couple of years, but will instead begin a new partnership with BoxCast, an online video-streaming service. All sporting events held in Gill Gym or on the football field will be broadcast through a live video feed. Games will also be available in high definition video for a charge of six dollars per game."

"God's Work. Our Hands." August 9, 2007 Lutherans Revolutionizing Identity Amid Membership Decline

"God's Work. Our Hands." August 9, 2007 Lutherans Revolutionizing Identity Amid Membership Decline

Evangelical Lutherans announced plans to revolutionize the way they communicate their identity to the public as a denomination.

In an effort to turn the tide on shrinking membership, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) – the nation's largest Lutheran denomination – is slated to unveil next month a branding campaign that will run ads in newspapers, billboards, bus shelters and websites with the tagline "God's Work. Our Hands."

"We've seen a decline in membership and in average worship attendance. We, together, intend to reverse these trends not by becoming something we are not but by revolutionizing the way we communicate who we are," said the Rev. Mark Hanson, ELCA’s presiding bishop, at the Aug. 6-11 Churchwide Assembly in Chicago, according to the ELCA News Service.

Hanson, who was re-elected to serve a second term, is confident that simple and powerful communication will help grow ELCA's evangelical outreach and help the denomination "step forward as a public church."

Each ELCA leader is also being urged to have at least one mentor and to serve as a mentor to at least one other person by 2012 – the year of ELCA's 25th anniversary – in hopes of growing membership in the 4.8 million-member denomination.

The ELCA is also moving forward in its Evangelism Strategy – a vision for the new century that was adopted in 2003. The strategy includes 172 new congregation starts – 53 percent of which are among people of color and/or people with primary languages other than English.

Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - Led Zeppelin

Babe I'm Gonna Leave You by Led Zeppelin

Released January 12, 1969

Lyrics:

Babe, baby, baby, I'm Gonna Leave You.
I said baby, you know I'm gonna leave you.
I'll leave you when the summertime,
Leave you when the summer comes a-rollin'
Leave you when the summer comes along.

Baby, baby, I don't wanna leave you,
I ain't jokin' woman, I got to ramble.
Oh, yeah, baby, baby, I believin',
We really got to ramble.
I can hear it callin' me the way it used to do,
I can hear it callin' me back home!

Babe...I'm gonna leave you
Oh, baby, you know, I've really got to leave you
Oh I can hear it callin 'me
I said don't you hear it callin' me the way it used to do?

I know I never never never gonna leave your babe
But I got to go away from this place,
I've got to quit you, yeah
Baby, ooh don't you hear it callin' me?
Woman, woman, I know, I know
It feels good to have you back again
And I know that one day baby, it's really gonna grow, yes it is.
We gonna go walkin' through the park every day.
Come what may, every day

It was really, really good.
You made me happy every single day.
But now... I've got to go away!

Baby, baby, baby, baby
That's when it's callin' me
I said that's when it's callin' me back home...

Spanky & Our Gang - "Like To Get To Know You" (1968)

Spanky & Our Gang - "Like To Get To Know You" (1968)

Spanky & Our Gang - Answers
http://www.answers.com/topic/spanky-a...
Group History
http://www.classicbands.com/spanky.html

Spanky and Our Gang was an American 1960s folk-rock band led by Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane. The band derives its name from Hal Roach's popular Our Gang comedies of the 1930s (known to modern audiences as The Little Rascals). McFarlane was nicknamed "Spanky" because one of the band members, perhaps influenced by her last name, said that she resembled Our Gang star George "Spanky" McFarland. The group was known for its vocal harmonies.

The group's first album, simply titled Spanky and Our Gang, was released by Mercury Records on August 1, 1967, and included three popular songs that were released as singles. These were "Sunday Will Never Be the Same" (their biggest hit, which reached number #9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in Summer 1967) followed by "Making Every Minute Count" (reached #31) and "Lazy Day" (reached #14). Both "Sunday Will Never Be The Same" and "Lazy Day" sold over one million copies. "Sunday Will Never Be the Same" was written by Terry Cashman and Gene Pistilli. In an interview by Cashman with the Songfacts website, he revealed that the song was originally written as a ballad. However, Cashman said the group "changed it, and they added the vocal, 'Ba-da-da-da-da,' which was a great hook."

Their second album, Like to Get to Know You, was released in April 1968. Two singles were released: "Sunday Mornin'" in the spring, which reached #30, and "Like to Get to Know You", which reached #17 in the Summer 1968. The single's B-side, "Three Ways From Tomorrow", also received considerable airplay. The album also included their rendition of the classic "Stardust" and a version of "Everybody'ss Talkin'", best known as a hit single for Harry Nilsson and the theme song for the movie Midnight Cowboy.

"Give a Damn" was released as a single in Summer 1968. In spite of not receiving airplay in several markets because of the curse word in its title - and because it was a comment on racial equality that became the theme song for the New York Urban Coalition - the song became a regional hit where released and overall made #43. It was also performed live on an episode of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, resulting in CBS' Standards and Practices division receiving numerous complaints about the song's title being used during "family viewing hours". One such complaint reportedly came from Richard Nixon (Tom Smothers, 'Geraldo' Interview, 1987). "Give a Damn" would become John Lindsay's campaign song during his successful run for Mayor of New York.

In October 1968, the group's lead guitarist Malcolm Hale died of carbon monoxide poisoning due to a faulty heating system (Hale's death has also been ascribed to bronchopneumonia). This was a devastating blow to the group. The 27-year old was a multi-instrumentalist, did much of the arranging and pretty well kept the band together. Hale's death, along with the group's satisfaction over what they'd achieved musically, resulted in the decision to disband early in 1969. Mercury released a third album, Anything You Choose b/w Without Rhythm or Reason, in January 1969. It contained two popular songs, the previous summer's hit "Give a Damn" and "Yesterday's Rain".

After the band's break-up, McFarlane enjoyed some success as a solo artist. She also toured for years with the Mamas & the Papas, singing primarily the parts previously performed by the late Cass Elliot. She was most recently seen on stage in Ferndale Repertory Theatre's production of South Pacific, portraying Bloody Mary.

The group briefly reformed in 1975 and recorded an album Change for the Epic label.

Lutheran congregation at church founded in 1765 votes to dissolve

By Diane Reynolds, Times Staff Writer Wednesday, October 05, 2005

On Sunday, Sept. 25, Bishop H. Gerard Knoche of the Delaware-Maryland Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America had preached the church's final sermon.

A synod is a regional group of ELCA churches

[…]

The county lost a little piece of local history with the church's closing.

In the 1700s, building churches was so expensive for small congregations that many Reformed (now United Church of Christ) and Lutheran churches in the area pooled resources to build structures that both congregations shared.

Emmanuel Baust Lutheran was part of the union church movement, sharing space with Emmanuel Baust United Church of Christ.

Because German immigrants often established both Reformed and Lutheran churches, shared language and culture helped the joint ventures succeed.

At one time, more than 200 union churches ran from Reading, Pa., into northern Maryland.

Luke 14:25-33 Commentary by Emerson Powery - Working Preacher - Preaching This Week (RCL)

Luke 14:25-33 Commentary by Emerson Powery - Working Preacher - Preaching This Week (RCL):

http://www.workingpreacher.org/preaching.aspx?commentary_id=1755

Luke is interested in stories about Jesus and his family.

It’s the only Gospel that tells us that John the Baptist and Jesus were related, probably cousins (cf. 1:36). And, it’s the only Gospel to provide a story about the young twelve-year-old Jesus (cf. 2:41-52). On the one hand, this story is told to exemplify Jesus’ developing wisdom (cf. 2:47-48). On the other hand, it is a story that expresses a tension between Jesus and his parents (cf. 2:48-49). Luke ends the story on a happy note by describing Jesus as an obedient child (cf. 2:51). All is well in this first-century Jewish family’s home. Yet, this was a snapshot of things to come in Luke’s story.

Commentary
Jesus’ radical teaching continues in Luke 14:25-33. His selection criteria for increasing the pool of disciples are stringent. First, his followers must be people of “hate” (14:26). Second, they must be willing to “carry the cross” (14:27). Third, a willingness to relinquish possessions may also be necessary (14:33).

To be clear, Luke’s Jesus offers much harsher language than Matthew’s Jesus on the expected ongoing relationships of disciples with their families in light of becoming followers of Jesus (cf. Matthew 10:37-38). Perhaps it is because Luke’s Jesus addresses a large crowd rather than the disciples specifically (as in Matthew), so Jesus’ intention is to turn away half-hearted, potential followers. What is certain is that Jesus is not interested in growing his group just for the sake of growth!

News from The Hill: Angry House Republicans demand better communication By Molly K. Hooper

News from The Hill:

Angry House Republicans demand better communication

By Molly K. Hooper

Republican lawmakers are growing increasingly frustrated with what they say is a lack of communication from their leaders.

Both centrist and conservative members in the House believe that Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and his lieutenants could have done more earlier this year to counter the Tea Party's effort to defund ObamaCare.

Some Republicans on Capitol Hill say such an effort is politically impossible with a Democratic-controlled Senate and a Democrat in the White House. Regardless, the rift on what to do on ObamaCare has opened up a civil war within the GOP.

That deep division is flaring at a time when fiscal showdowns are front and center following the August recess.

Read the story here.
