Priscilla G. Teeter, a registered nurse who later became an administrator with the Carroll County Health Department, died May 30 of brain cancer at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster. She was 85.

Mrs. Teeter was an absolutely wonderful person, as was her late husband, who was also extremely good to Caroline and me. Mrs. Teeter will be greatly missed and her passing makes me very-very sad.

According to Mr. Rasmussen, "Mrs. Teeter was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 17 Bond St., Westminster, where a celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday."

"COLUMBIA, S.C.— A Marine who threw himself on a grenade during a Taliban attack in Afghanistan to save a comrade's life will receive the Medal of Honor Thursday from President Obama.

Retired Marine corporal William Kyle Carpenter, 24, sustained major injuries, including the loss of his right eye. After a long recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, he's now attending the University of South Carolina.

WLTX-TV spoke with Carpenter about the moments after the attack in 2010 and what it's like to be recognized for his sacrifice. Here is an edited version of the conversation:"

DATE: Monday, June 16, 2014

DISPATCH TIME: 12:15 p.m. in the afternoon. The first units arrived on scene at 12:20 p.m. The fire declared under control at 13:06 p.m.

LOCATION: 700 block of Mulligan Lane off Windsor Drive in Westminster

INCIDENT Classification: FIRE SUPPRESSION Box alarm

INCIDENT DESCRIPTION: Responded to smoke coming from the rear of a residential home in the 700 block of Mulligan Lane.

INITIAL ON-SCENE UNIT: Engine 33 on scene at12:20 p.m. All units cleared the scene at 14:24.

Initial Findings: Lt. 3-3 arrived to find smoke showing. After doing a 360, the Lt. found fire running up the exterior wall, on the Charlie side, to the attic.

ACTIONS TAKEN: Engine 33 on scene. Laid line from fire hydrant and then the firefighters went interior with an inch and three-quarter hand line.

Chief 3-1 assumed command… After further inspection, smoke was discovered in the basement as well as the two upper floors. Westminster 31 and 33, and Reese 91 went to the second floor and pulled ceilings to stop the fire from spreading in the attic.

Assistance on the fire attack - on the second floor, the basement and pulling the siding on the Delta side, was provided by New Windsor 101, Ladder Taneytown 5 and Engine Pleasant Valley 63.

Firefighters secured all utilities, and rescued a dog, cat and two birds from the house.

It is preliminarily estimated that $60,000 to the building and $20,000 damage to the contents.

ON-SCENE INJURED: No injuries were reported.

Mutual AIDE COMPANY(S): Reese, New Windsor, Pleasant Valley, Union Bridge, Hampstead, Taneytown, and Lineboro.

14 firefighters responded from Westminster. It is estimated that 35 to 45 volunteers responded from other Carroll County volunteer fire departments.

SPECIAL SUPPORT Services(s): Westminster Fire Police, Canteen and Chaplain responded and the MD State Fire Marshall. Baltimore Gas Election and a representative from the Carroll County office of permits and inspections.

The fire remains under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s office.

U.S. captures Benghazi suspect in secret raid

U.S. Special Operations forces have captured the alleged ringleader of the terrorist attacks in Benghazi in a secret raid in Libya, the first time one of the accused perpetrators of the 2012 assault has been apprehended, according to U.S. officials.

The officials said Ahmed Abu Khattala was captured over the weekend by American troops working alongside the FBI and is now in U.S. custody “in a secure location outside Libya.” Khattala was apprehended near Benghazi.

As the centenary of World War I approaches, which can be dated from the assassination of the Hapsburg Austrian empire heir Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, Bosnia, on July 28, 1914, the expected rasher of books has rekindled discussion on the war's cause, about which there has never been a consensus among historians.

Was it, as Article 231 of the Versailles Treaty ending the war maintained, a matter of aggressive German imperialism, of Kaiser Wilhlem II making ruthless war on hapless and sometime helpless European neighbors? Or was it, as nationalist historians during and after World War II asserted, the combined stupidity of such European leaders as the Kaiser, England's Sir Edward Grey, France's Raymond Poincarre, Russia's foreign minister Sergei Sozonov and the Austrian Francis Joseph...
