Baltimore Sun publishes IMA World Health Broken Silence editorial

Advising faith leaders on addressing violence

In June, IMA World Health, WeWillSpeakOut.US and Sojourners teamed up to release a report called Broken Silence: A Call for Churches to Speak Out. The report was based on a survey that LifeWay Research conducted among 1,000 US Protestant pastors.

The Baltimore Sun just published an editorial that I co-wrote with Sojourners President and Founder Jim Wallis and Amy Gopp, Director of Member Relations and Pastor Care at Church World Service.

We invite you to read this editorial, leave your comments, and share it so that we can continue spreading the word about this important research and the opportunity for our faith leaders to take responsible action to end sexual and domestic violence.

In partnership,

Rick Santos
President and CEO

There is a new word in the French language: La mannschaft. Spiegel: What Is Wrong with the Grand Nation?

A TOUR OF FRANCE

What Is Wrong with the Grand Nation?

The TV images of the Tour de France show an idyllic country, but behind the gloss is a nation where fears of decline are prompting people to vote for the far right. A trip along the route of the world's most famous cycling race reveals the deep uncertainty ailing the French.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/taking-stock-of-a-france-that-has-fallen-sick-a-982106.html#ref=nl-international

There is a new word in the French language: La mannschaft. It's the term used to define everything that is enviable on the opposite bank of the Rhine River -- in other words, Germany's success. It's a success that is the product of the collective and is free of any of the egocentrics, self-deluded, bling-bling divas and "general director presidents," as the heads of French companies are called, that can make France so stuffy.

A week ago Monday, on Bastille Day, newspapers across France sighed that it wouldn't hurt if the country were a bit more like la mannschaft. Instead, unemployment is twice as high as it is in Germany, growth and investments have fallen far and former President Nicolas Sarkozy was recently detained for questioning by police at dawn. La mannschaft is the polar opposite of the other word currently in fashion in France: le malaise. A deep gloom appears to have taken hold in France. A recent survey showed that two-thirds of the French are "pessimistic" about their country's future.

"Viewed from the outside, France under François Hollande is like Cuba, only without the sun but with the extreme right," the newsweekly Le Point recently wrote. The country is "impoverished, over-indebted, divided, humbled and humiliated and finds itself in a pre-revolutionary situation in which anything seems possible."

Recreation in Westminster always a hot topic during summer [Column]

Recreation in Westminster always a hot topic during summer [Column]

The City of Westminster and Carroll County's Department of Recreation and Parks have joined the National Recreation and Parks Association in celebrating National Recreation and Parks Month.

According to NRPA.org, the theme for this year's month-long celebration is "OUT is IN."

On April 7, 1922, the Democratic Advocate published an editorial about "Westminster and the recreation problem."

"Our fathers did not have recreational centers. Why should we have them now? Our fathers did not have telephones, automobiles, electric lights, rural free delivery of mails, and many other conveniences which we now enjoy. Shall we dispense with them because they were unknown to the previous generation?

"We cannot do business as our fathers did. Can we take our recreation as they did? In the early days work and play were combined. The men of a community would gather for 'clearing the new ground,' 'log rollings,' 'barn raisings.' 'harvesting parties' 'husking bees,' and the like.

"At the same time the women had their 'quilting parties' and did the cooking for the community feast. In the evening there were the community plays. Those days are gone never to return." ....

"Prevent medical bills from spoiling credit
By Liz Weston • Bankrate.com

Medical bills that wind up in collections hurt your credit scores more than they should.

That was the conclusion the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reached after studying 5 million credit reports. The federal regulator tracked how well credit scores predicted people's future creditworthiness after medical bills showed up on their reports.

The answer: Not that well. The CFPB says people with medical collections generally paid their other obligations on par with those whose credit scores were 10 points higher. And those who paid off their medical collections should have received scores 16 to 22 points higher on average."

Historical Society of Carroll County MD Box Lunch Talk by former Westminster Mayor Kevin Dayhoff

Historical Society of Carroll County MD Box Lunch Talk by former Westminster Mayor Kevin Dayhoff

Celebrating 250-years of Westminster MD history

TUESDAY, JULY 8, 2014 Historical Society of Carroll County MD Box Lunch Talk: William Winchester founded the city of Westminster MD 250 years ago in 1764 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4ZJszwlbyA&list=UU3II1CrxPqubFKXY6D8p7WQ

Westminster was founded in 1764 by William Winchester (1711 – 1790) of England. This year, we celebrate the 250th anniversary, or sestercentennial, of our great City’s founding with many wonderful events. http://westminstermd.gov/369/Celebrate-250-Years

A Storied History - Watch an historical presentation on the City of Westminster, presented by Kevin Dayhoff (Mayor, 2001 - 2005) by clicking here (YouTube video.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4ZJszwlbyA&list=UU3II1CrxPqubFKXY6D8p7WQ

In 1764 William Winchester developed a plan to sell forty-five lots along “King Street” on a sixteen-acre portion of the northern end of “White’s level” on the main road to Baltimore Town. The “piece of ground” was to be called “Westminster.” Come celebrate the 250th anniversary of Westminster with local Baltimore Sun history writer Kevin Dayhoff as he traces the storied history of Westminster, the Carroll County seat of government.

The Box Lunch Talk (BLT) program attracts scores of local history enthusiasts every month! These hour-long events – easily our most popular – begin promptly at Noon on the second Tuesday of every month in Grace Hall, Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll Street, Westminster. http://gracelc.org/

Free parking is available in the lot on Carroll Street. Enter the building through Entrance #2, on Carroll Street.

Past topics include The Wines of Central Maryland, Past Present & FutureHistoric Barns of Carroll County; andWhere is Grandma Hiding?, which showed guests how to explore their genealogy.

Participating is inexpensive and easy! Guests bring their lunch and enjoy a small selection of beverages and dessert. Admission is $5 for members and $10 for non-members.

To see our current BLT schedule, pick up a copy of our newsletter The Courier, check out our calendar online, or give us a call at 410-848-6494. Programs are subject to change without prior notice.

Water shut-offs are hate crimes: Netroots Nation progressives protest in Detroit.

Water shut-offs are hate crimes: Netroots Nation progressives protest in Detroit.:

By David Weigel

"DETROIT—One of the truly great things about Netroots Nation is the annual move to a brand-new city. Only Las Vegas has hosted two of these conventions. Every other year, the circus tents have plunked into a union-friendly state (Michigan was until fairly recently) and been flavored by the local progressive movement. Last year Northern California, this year Michigan.

I think that adds to the thick aura of populism. After listening to Rep. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Gary Peters, and Mark Ruffalo (an anti-fracking campaigner, if you didn't know), anyone who was so moved could join the National Nurses United in a protest of the city shutting off water for people who hadn't paid their water bills. "

Park designation for July a signal for Carroll residents to get out and move

Park designation for July a signal for Carroll residents to get out and move

Read more: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/carroll/westminster/ph-ce-park-month-0713-20140706,0,7254716.story

By Katie V. Jones, July 6, 2014

Since 1985, July has been declared National Parks and
Recreation Month by the National Recreation and Park Association.

For residents of Carroll County, the designation is another
signal that it's a great time to take advantage of the many outdoor facilities
both the county and local municipalities offer.

"It's a good to get outside," said Jeff Degitz,
administrator for the Carroll County Recreation and Parks, citing fitness and
social benefits as well as learning more about the environment and world.
"I encourage everyone to come out and hit the trails and use our
parks."

Several special programs are being offered by both the
county and City of Westminster to encourage people to enjoy the outdoors. The
offerings are the result of some get-togethers, sharing of ideas and evaluating
past suggestions.

"We get together and brainstorm," said Kristi
Turgeon, administrator coordinator for Westminster's Department of Recreation
and Parks. "What kind of stuff went well? Anything we want to change?
Anything new we can bring?"

As a result of the brainstorming, the city offers an
activity every day, from free snow cones at Locust Lane Park on Wednesdays, to
free Zumba and yoga classes. While last year's outside movie night had some
issues, they decided to give it another try this year, she said.

Killing of Palestinian Youth Puts an Israeli Focus on Extremism - NYTimes.com

Killing of Palestinian Youth Puts an Israeli Focus on Extremism - NYTimes.com: "By STEVEN ERLANGER JULY 10, 2014"

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/11/world/middleeast/killing-of-palestinian-youth-puts-an-israeli-focus-on-extremism.html?emc=edit_th_20140711&nl=todaysheadlines&nlid=45685287&_r=2

JERUSALEM — Even as the Israeli public offers strong support for airstrikes on Hamas fighters and their weapons stocks in Gaza, there is a good deal of reflection over the coldblooded killing of a Palestinian teenager that helped lead to the latest increase in violence.
Brutality against innocents is not new on either side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But, despite a court order that bans the disclosure of information in the case, Israelis have been discussing links between the suspects arrested in the killing of the teenager, Muhammad Abu Khdeir, and Israeli right-wing extremist groups that have at times operated with impunity.
Very little about the six suspects has been confirmed, because of the court order. But several Israeli media outlets have linked them to extremist groups, describing them as “shababnikkim,” pejorative Hebrew slang for right-wing extremist youth from ultra-Orthodox homes on the fringes of Orthodox society...

Wesley Theological Seminary: Dr. Mary Alice Douty Edwards, professor emerita of Christian education passed away on July 10 at age 100.

We are mourning the loss of Dr. Mary Alice Douty Edwards, professor emerita of Christian education, who passed away on July 10 at age 100.

She taught at Wesley from 1957 until 1983. She served as interim dean when Dr. Phil Wogaman stepped down. President Doug Lewis remembers her dedication to her students, her love of the institution and her firm resolve.

She was the last surviving faculty member who taught in Westminster, Maryland before the seminary moved to Washington in 1958. "It was a smaller group in those days. But, like our faculty today, Mary Alice exemplified the essential quality of this community: the care professors have for their students," says Wesley President David McAllister-Wilson.

There will be a service celebrating Dr. Mary Alice Edward's life at Wesley's Oxnam Chapel on Tuesday, September 2 at 4:30 p.m. We hope you can join us for this service.
