Services at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster Md are cancelled for Sunday February 22, 2015

According to an alert released by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) early Saturday evening, February 21, 2015, “Hazardous road conditions exist due to winter storm - stay off the roads to allow the crews to clear them and to allow emergency providers to respond during this time. Check in on family, friends, and neighbors - especially the elderly or disabled. Keep devices charged to follow weather and local emergency information. Be cautious when shoveling snow to avoid over exertion.”

Out of an abundance of caution, Grace Lutheran Church at 21 Carroll Street in Westminster Md., cancelled all services and Christian education on both Saturday evening and on Sunday, February 22, 2015.

Please join us for worship this coming Wednesday at 7 p.m. with soup at 6! Stay safe!

Marnie and Louis celebrate Valentine's Day in Medina at Ice Sculptur Festival

On February 14 around the year 278 A.D., Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, was executed.

On February 14 around the year 278 A.D., Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, was executed.

Under the rule of Claudius the Cruel, Rome was involved in many unpopular and bloody campaigns. The emperor had to maintain a strong army, but was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment to their wives and families.

To get rid of the problem, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentine was arrested and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. The sentence was carried out on February 14, on or about the year 270.

Legend also has it that while in jail, St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine."

Ed Beck, member of the ‘back pew club’ at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster; has died.

Ed Beck, Operations Manager of Aggregates Production overseeing gravel, stone, and sand plants for the Arundel Corporation throughout Maryland and member of the back pew club at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster; has died.

Mr. Beck was a wonderful man who always had a smile and something friendly to say when I would see in the very back pew at Sunday services at Grace Lutheran Church. More often than not, when Caroline and I served as ushers at church, we would chat with him and his wife, Mrs. Miriam Beck, a former board member of Carroll County Bank and Trust Company; about a wide-range of topics from banking, to economics, to current events and politics.

Mr. Beck will very much be missed. I would always look for him every Sunday at church.

Obituary for Mr. Edward Raymond Beck February 12, 2015:

Edward Raymond "Ed" Beck of Berrett died Thursday, February 12, 2015 at home.

Born April 16, 1929, in Berrett, Carroll County, he was the son of Charles Raymond and Margaret Dorsey Beck. He was the husband of Miriam Freter Beck, his wife of 57 years.

Born into farm life, he began milking cows at age six and driving a tractor at age eight. He worked on the farm through his school years graduating from Sykesville High School in 1946.

Tired of farm life he enlisted in the Army in 1954. Following training in Manual Morse Code Interception he served in the Army Security Agency in Berlin, Germany intercepting coded messages sent from Communist countries.

Following his discharge in 1957, he was employed by the Arundel Corporation in Baltimore. At retirement in 1990, he was Operations Manager of Aggregates Production overseeing gravel, stone, and sand plants throughout Maryland.

Throughout his life he was an avid hunter, trap shooter, and lover of nature. Fishing and boating at the family retreat in Ozark County, Missouri were prized vacation activities since 1972.

Family always gave him pleasure, especially the musical events in which his daughters and grandchildren performed. In retirement, golfing and vegetable gardening were enjoyable pastimes as well as responding to family needs with his ability to repair, improve and even invent.

From birth he attended Messiah Lutheran Church next door to his family home and one which his grandparents and great grandparents helped found. He was confirmed there in 1943. He served on the Church Council, the Property Committee, as Treasurer, and in his youth dug graves to earn extra spending money. For the last twenty five years he had been a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster.

Mrs. Pease was a remarkable person who owned and operated Bobby’s Hobby Lobby, a Westminster institution on Main Street in the middle of downtown, for several generations of Carroll Countians growing-up in an era long gone by.

Several years ago Mrs. Pease and Bobby’s Hobby Lobby was the focus of one or two articles I wrote for the Sunday Carroll Eagle section of the Baltimore Sun.

According to information e-mailed by a family member, her obit reads as follows. You may also find her obit and family arrangements at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A., in Westminster. Her obituary appears here: http://www.fletcherfuneralhome.net/obits/obituary.php?id=639899

She owned and operated Bobby’s Hobby Lobby on Main Street in Westminster for over 40 years.  She worked for Martin Aircraft in her earlier years and graduated from the Peabody Conservatory.  She was a member of the Westminster Retail Merchant Association, Carroll County Philatelic Association, Westminster United Methodist Church and helped start Westminster Fallfest.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Roberta and Brian Kasik of Randallstown, daughter Beverly Pease of Germantown, son Christopher Pease of Winter Garden, FL and many beloved friends.

She was predeceased by sisters Winifred Layton, Geraldine Cooke, Ada McNabb, Ina Spring and a brother Luther Spring.

Anarchist hackers go to cyber war with ISIS | TheHill: "By Elise Viebeck  http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2015/02/anarchist-hackers-go-to-cyber-war-with.html

The global hacker collective known as Anonymous is storming the international political scene with a brash hacking campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The shadowy anarchist group, which is known for waging online attacks on everyone from the U.S. government to the Church of Scientology, is trying to dismantle the vast social media operation that helps ISIS recruit new followers.

By exposing and disabling hundreds of Twitter accounts, email addresses and websites purportedly affiliated with ISIS, hackers with Anonymous are all but inviting the notoriously Web-savvy terrorist group to an online war.

“In an interesting way, they are set up as perfect nemeses,” said Gabriella Coleman, anthropologist and author of Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy: The Many Faces of Anonymous. “There are a lot of similarities in terms of how they use social media. It doesn’t surprise me that they would battle each other online.”

Anonymous first became a force online in 2003, when like-minded users of the website 4chan began staging pranks on social media networks...
