 According to a recent release by the Office of the State Fire Marshal:

 In 2014 the Office of the State Fire Marshal celebrated its 50th Anniversary and for a little over thirty of those years the OSFM has been recognized and identified by the familiar "blue oval" OSFM patch.  

 For the 50th Anniversary, Fire Marshal Geraci tasked a small cadre of sworn employees to design a special edition 50th Anniversary patch for employees and "in-house" use only.  

 After designing and formally introducing the 50th Anniversary patch, Fire Marshal Geraci decided the OSFM should have a newer, fresher and re-branded  logo and the work group was again given the honorable task of designing a new OSFM patch. 

 This patch was designed to be unique in its look as well as to show the OSFM is an agency under the Department of State Police.  After numerous meetings and design changes, two (2) designs were submitted to the employees of the OSFM and all employees voted for the final patch. 

      On April 1, 2015 the new logo was officially adopted for official OSFM use. You may have noticed this new logo on recently sent Notice of Investigations (NOI) and News Releases as well as our website and Facebook pages.  I wanted to forward you the new logo in JPEG format should you want to use an OSFM logo on your website or on your printed copies. We are requesting you to use this new logo and to discontinue the older "blue oval".
     Additionally, OSFM sworn police employees will soon be issued new badges that again are unique its design, clearly identifiable and can not be ordered on a "build a badge" website. Additional information may follow in a News Release in the future from PIO Bruce Bouch.

The emergency response was quickly upgraded in response to a report that individuals were trapped in the fire.

In addition to units from the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1, firefighters and EMS personnel and multiple emergency response units of Carroll County volunteer fire companies 6, 9, 10, 2 and 4 responded: 6 – Pleasant Valley, 9 – Reese, 10 – New Windsor, and 4 – Manchester.

INITIAL ON-SCENE UNIT, Initial Findings, and ACTIONS TAKEN: Westminster first arrived on the scene at 5:18 with Engine 33. Westminster assistant chief Jim Starry in command.

Upon arrival, smoke was evident from the first floor of what appeared to be a structure divided into two apartments, one on the first floor and a second apartment on the second floor.

The emergency responders from Westminster quickly identified one individual inside the structure and one individual outside that appeared to be not moving, perhaps unconscious.

Maryland State Police aviation units were requested.

Westminster firefighters rescued an unresponsive woman from the first floor and located and responded to an unresponsive male outside the dwelling.

Other than suffering from smoke inhalation, the condition of the woman was unknown. Both the male and the female were transported to Carroll Hospital.

Maryland Senior Deputy State Fire Marshall Bruce D. Bouch later reported that both individuals were treated and released from Carroll Hospital.

The fire was declared under control in a short period of time after some quick action by Westminster firefighters which quickly prevented the fire from spreading.

Units remained on the scene for about an hour. Firefighters reported that the fire may have originated in the kitchen. The source of the fire appeared to be two pots on the stove with the burners turned-on high. Firefighters turned-off the burners and ventilated the apartment.

At present, there are no reports of any emergency responders injured in the response.

In addition to Carroll County firefighters, and an initial dispatch of Maryland State Police aviation – which was subsequently terminated when it was determined that the individuals could be transported by ambulance to Carroll Hospital; officers from the Westminster city police responded as well as personnel from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maryland State Fire Marshalls Office.

According to Deputy Fire Marshall Bruce D. Bouch, investigators have made a preliminary determination that the fire was accidental as a result of unattended cooking on the stove in the kitchen.

Bouch further cautioned that folks ought to always stay in the kitchen while cooking. “If you have to leave the kitchen, turn the stove off,” reminded Bouch.

The incident and the fire remains under the joint investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s office and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.

Warner aims to put experience to work on Manchester Town Council

Ryan Warner hopes to put his political experience to use as a member of the Manchester Town Council.

Warner, 24, is running for one of two open council seats in the May 18 election.

The 1998 Towson University graduate has spent a year as a legislative aide to Del. Joe Getty, R-Carroll. He was elected to the Carroll County Republican Central Committee last year and has been vice president of the Carroll County Republican Club since 1997.

Warner said that if elected, he would focus on public accessibility to local government, the Manchester bypass, the town's search for more water sources, growth and parking concerns.

Gov. Parris Glendening's staff took the Manchester bypass off the books this year, saying it didn't comply with Smart Growth. Hampstead's bypass is still moving ahead, and some Manchester town council members have said they would fight Hampstead's bypass if Manchester can't get its own half-loop around Md. 30.

"Inducing or creating animosity between the Hampstead and Manchester councils would be extremely counterproductive," Warner said.

He said he would try to build consensus on the issue.

He said the town needs to "aggressively advance the search for alternative water sources," and he would start public discussion about whether Manchester should put fluoride in its water. He said Manchester is one of the few municipalities in the state that does not have fluoride in its water, meaning school-age kids have to take fluoride tablets.

Warner said Manchester should stick to its master plan to deal with growth and preserve the town's past while preparing it for the future.

He said town codes allow some developments to be built with streets that aren't wide enough to allow parking on the street. That should change, he feels.

Shannon Michael Corey, 60, of Spring Township, passed away unexpectedly in The Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading, on March 1, 2014.

He is survived by the love of his life, Theresa (Bijold) Corey. They were married for 37 years.

Born in Yale, MI, on June 20, 1953, he was the son of the late Shannon Abraham and Hildreth Denise (Berryhill) Corey.

Shannon was a graduate of Westminster High School and earned his Project Management Sixth Sigma Black Belt.

He retired from Amtrak in December, 2012 and was employed as an information technology manager for Ace Insurance Company, Philadelphia.

Shannon served in the U.S. Air Force and is a Vietnam Era Veteran.

He was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church, Whitfield for 28 years.

Shannon’s family and friends were very important to him.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are his two sons: LCDR Shannon Andrew Corey, US Navy, husband of Shannon L. Corey of Stuttgart, Germany and Justin Michael Corey, husband of April L. Corey of Chesapeake Beach, MD.

Also surviving are his seven grandchildren: Grace, Patrick, Ian, Liam, Gavin, Sommer and Xander.

In addition, he was survived by his loving extended family of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, a niece, nephews, great nieces and nephews and many loving friends and neighbors.

Other survivors include his two canine buddies, rescued greyhounds, Chris and Oscar.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Ignatius Church, 2810 St. Albans Dr., Whitfield. A visitation will be held Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave. West Reading. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, www.rmhc.org. and/or Berks County Food Bank, www.berksfoodbank.org.

Veteran radio personality Leonard Roberts, left, shares old broadcasting stories with Glenn Bair. Roberts actually first started in newspapers  with the Carroll County Times in 1969; but quickly moved-on to work in radio. After working for a number of stations over the years, he retired in 2009.

The sister, Sidney Ann Sweet, of our Westminster High School class of 1971 classmate Leonard Roberts, has died.

Sidney Ann Sweet, 58, of Westminster, died June 22, 2015 at Golden Living Center.

She was the brother of our dear friend and Westminster High School class of 1971 classmate, Leonard Roberts.

On behalf of the Westminster High School Class of 1971, our thoughts and prayers are with the Leonard Roberts family at this difficult time.

Scarlet and Leonard May God keep you close at this time. Our class understands the emptiness that overshadows siblings when death comes and grief lingers. Yet, death cannot separate you from a lifetime of love and shared memories. These gifts remain as God's loving touches of His grace. Though we cannot be with you physically, we will continually lift you in prayer as often as we think about you and your beloved sister.

May God keep open the "eyes of your heart" to remind you of his constant presence to comfort and guide you, to love and keep you, and grant you overcoming peace. In Loving memory.

Born July 16, 1956 in Baltimore, Sidney Ann Sweet was the daughter of the late Hattie Rutherford Roberts and Leonard R. Roberts, Sr.

Sidney was a 1978 graduate of Western Maryland College where she received her bachelor’s degree in psychology. She worked as an Eligibility Counselor for the Welfare Department in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

She was a member of the Union Street United Methodist Church.

Visitation at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel P.A., 412 Washington Road, Westminster, MD 21157, United States; is from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday June 28, 2015.
