New York Times columnist Tom Friedman hails China's one-party autocracy

Washington Examiner Political Digest

Michael Barone - New York Times columnist Tom Friedman hails China's one-party autocracy

The dwindling number of readers of the New York Times were treated Wednesday to a column by Thomas Friedman extolling China's "one-party autocracy," which, he told us, "is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people." China's leaders, he reported, are "boosting gasoline prices" and "overtaking us in electric cars, solar power, energy efficiency, batteries, nuclear power and wind power." All, of course, in the cause of reducing carbon emissions, which so many luminaries assure us are bound to produce global warming and environmental catastrophe.

As Jonah Goldberg, author of the scholarly best-seller "Liberal Fascism" notes, "This is exactly the argument that was made by American fans of Mussolini in the 1920s." Mussolini, we were told then, made the trains run on time. He drained the Pontine marshes. He got things done while Americans, with their chaotic democratic politics, dithered.

Timothy P. Carney - Billy Tauzin: K Street's Drug Kingpin

The drug industry's top lobbyist has a history of fighting and winning -- whatever team he's on

This summer and fall, as the drug industry's top lobbyist, Tauzin is once more in the center of the fray. He finds himself cozying up to a president who used him as a whipping boy during the campaign and is derided as an appeaser by his former GOP House colleagues. On top of all that, he appears to have wounded his new partners by spilling the details of a closed-door deal between the drug industry and the White House.

Barack and Me By Ron Miller

Barack and Me By Ron Miller

Barack and Me
By
Ron Miller

I've been a committed conservative and, with the exception of one year where I listed myself as an independent, a registered Republican since 1978. What makes that rather unremarkable statement more intriguing is that I'm an American who happens to be black.

Anyone who follows politics knows that puts me in rare and sometimes lonely company. Black voting percentages for the Republican nominee for President since 1964 are typically in the single digits, reaching 11% nationwide in 2004 and, perhaps more significantly, 16% in Ohio, helping George W. Bush take that state and the Presidency for a second term. There is no single demographic group in the nation that is more loyal and, in my opinion, more taken for granted by the beneficiaries of their votes than blacks.

Until February 10, 2007, most of my black friends and associates tolerated my status as a conservative and Republican, dismissing me as a novelty or something less flattering but essentially harmless. After that date, and especially after the Iowa caucuses in the 2008 Presidential election, I became an enemy and someone who needed to be silenced at all costs.

What changed? The emergence of Barack Hussein Obama as the first viable black candidate for the Presidency, an occasion that called for racial solidarity over ideological purity or party loyalty.

I know I didn't change. I saw in Barack Obama not a black man but another liberal Democrat out to convince Americans to surrender their liberty for the benevolent dictatorship of government. To me, he was no different than Al Gore in 2000 or John Kerry in 2004.

That said,
the first time I wrote about him was after reading his book, The Audacity of Hope, and I was indeed hopeful that he might be different:

Kim Clijsters upsets Serena Williams in US Open semifinal after Williams called for unsportsmanlike penalty for yelling at an official

Associated Press NEW YORK -- Serena Williams' U.S. Open title defense ended in bizarre, ugly fashion Saturday night, when she was penalized a point on match point after yelling and shaking her racket in the direction of an official who called a foot fault.

Williams lost to unseeded, unranked Kim Clijsters 6-4, 7-5 in a taut semifinal that featured plenty of powerful groundstrokes by both women. No one will remember a single shot that was struck, though, because of the unusual, dramatic way it finished.

Last Sunday my family and I went on a history exploration trip to nearby Emmitsburg to visit the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

We are fortunate in Carroll County to have so many great places to visit nearby.

This summer, instead of a big vacation, we opted to spend our time -- and money -- close to home to the benefit of our local economy.

Day trips may be as simple as exploring the history of a local town or traveling to national and international destinations -- such as the Gettysburg or Antietam Civil War battlefields, or the Eisenhower National Historic Farm, also in Gettysburg.

Other great history excursions here in Carroll include the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Shriver Homestead, in Union Mills, the Historical Society of Carroll County, in Westminster, and the Strawbridge Shrine -- birthplace of American Methodism -- also in New Windsor.

Because Carroll has such a large Catholic population, many folks are familiar with St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, or simply Mother Seton as she is more often referred to locally.

For those who are not: Mother Seton is the first native-born U.S. citizen to be named a saint. She was canonized by Pope Paul VI on Sept. 14, 1975.

For everyone who has benefited from a Catholic school education, Mother Seton is the spiritual founder of Catholic school education in the United States,

Of course, for television trivia aficionados, the plot of the old television show starring Sally Field, "The Flying Nun," centered on a fictional nun who belonged to Mother Seton's order. The show even contained an occasional reference to Emmitsburg.

Tom Harbold: Data suggests cooling trend

Tom Harbold: Data suggests cooling trend

By Tom Harbold, Carroll County Times Columnist Tuesday, September 08, 2009

http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/articles/2009/09/08/news/opinion/opinion_columnists/opin404.txt
How much of a problem is anthropogenic, or human-caused, global warming?

Is it a problem at all? No one argues that periods of warming and cooling have happened in the past, but the concern now is that human activity may be exacerbating the problem. Or is it a problem?

Although it is both wise and praiseworthy to try to minimize our impact on global ecosystems, there is evidence that human activity, even in this techno-industrial age, may not have as much influence over the Earth’s climate as we think we do.
