The Economist: The wrecking of Venezuela

Hugo Chávez's government

The wrecking of Venezuela

Venezuelans are starting to fall out of love with their president. Will they be allowed to vote him out of power?

May 13th 2010 | From The Economist print edition

http://www.economist.com/opinion/displaystory.cfm?story_id=16109302

WITH his bellicose bombast, theatrical gestures and dodgy jokes, Hugo Chávez, Venezuela’s president for the past 11 years, has turned himself into one of the world’s most recognisable and controversial rulers. His fans salute him as a saviour for the downtrodden of the planet, a man who is leading a grass roots revolution against American imperialism and its local sepoys. But to many others, including this newspaper, he has come to embody a new, post-cold-war model of authoritarian rule which combines a democratic mandate, populist socialism and anti-Americanism, as well as resource nationalism and carefully calibrated repression.

The Hold Steady - The Weekenders on David Letterman HD 1080p

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfrPQUSzVHY

"The Weekenders"

There was that whole weird thing with the horses.
I think they know exactly what happened.
I don't think it needs any explaining.
I'm pretty sure I wasn't your first choice.
I think I was the last one remaining.
I wish we hadn't gone and destroyed it.
'Cause I was thinking we could pull another weekender.
If you've still got a little bit of clairvoyance.

I remember the metal bar.
I remember the reservoir.
You could say our paths have crossed before.

So if it has to be a secret.
Then I guess that I can deal with it.
You and I both know it's a negative thing.
In the end only the girls know the whole truth.

There were a couple pretty crass propositions.
There were some bugs in the bars.
There was a kid camped out by the coat check.
She said the theme of this party is the industrial age.
You came in dressed like a train wreck.

I remember the OTB.
The five second delivery.
You could say our paths have crossed before.

So if it has to be a secret.
Then I guess that I can deal with it.
God only knows it's not always a positive thing.
To see a few seconds into the future

Fine Art of Recycling By Charles Schelle

My Explore Carroll colleague, Charles Schelle, has written a great article on Eric Veach, who caught my eye with his wonderful art at the Westminster Flower and Jazz Festival:

Fine Art of Recycling

One man's junk is this man's creative canvas

Posted 5/16/10 by Carroll Eagle, Westminster Eagle
http://www.explorecarroll.com/news/4326/fine-art-recycling/
By Charles Schelle

When Eric Veach saw some leftover tractor parts pegged for the trash can last summer, the gears in his head started turning.

The 38-year-old Manchester resident thought he could take those worn-out parts, which had been removed from construction equipment, and create a holder for his pet's dog food bowl.

As it turned out, one man's junk turned out to be another man's canvas — and maybe even an environmental message.

"I started laying (the parts) out on a bench and seeing what would work, and that's kind of how I got started," Veach said.

Veach has been busy over the past year creating items ranging from miniature tractors and trucks to candle holders and some funky looking critters. He handcrafts each sculpture for his budding art business, Daughter's Delight.

Earlier in the week, Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks, one of a handful of artists whose drawings of Mohammed for a Danish newspaper touched of an international controversy, was attacked during a lecture he was giving at a Swedish university. Last night, arsonists tried to torch his house: The home of a Swedish artist who once drew a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad as a dog has been hit by a suspected arson attack, police said Saturday. Lars Vilks, who lives in Nyhamnslage in southern Sweden, was not at home during the attack late Friday night and no one was reported injured. But whose fault is that? BUSH: Well, I mean, I think that's a little bit of a bias, the -- the media bias that we -- everyone talks about a lot and I think that's part of it. I also think that because George was a conservative, a Republican president, that people assumed that I was, you know, a cookie-baking, stay-at-home mother. "Mama grizzlies"? Sarah Palin speaks.

By: Julie Mason

Gunnin' for ya! (ap photo) Who will avenge the American voter in November's midterm elections? The "mama grizzlies"! Also the pink elephants. Sarah Palin was making the rounds today, with speeches at the NRA convention and Susan B. Anthony's List. At the latter she said, "Look out, Washington. There's a whole stampede of pink elephants" coming. Whoa -- thanks for the heads up. The Washington Post also was there: "The mama grizzlies, they rise up," she said, to laughter. "You thought pit bulls are tough. You don't want to mess with the mama grizzlies. And I think there are a whole lot of those in this room." And in other news, Palin said the lesson of the BP oil spill is that we need to keep on drilling. Reports ABC News: "We need to keep...

Pelosi wants to cut congressional travel perks for everyone but her

By: Mark Hemingway
05/14/10 1:48 PM

The proposed reforms area step in the right direction -- for everyone but Nancy Pelosi: House leaders are revamping the rules for lawmakers and aides who travel overseas on official government business, forbidding them to fly in business class on shorter trips, use taxpayer funds to buy gifts or pocket unspent cash, among other changes. The new travel rules, proposed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, also strengthen accountability and oversight for taxpayer-funded trips. But the rules don't require lawmakers to disclose some of the biggest costs of such trips, including travel by military plane, which can double or triple the total costs. Funny that Pelosi didn't require disclosure of the cost of military travel. Is that because Pelosi flys around on military aircraft at...

A day with Clinton: Where do we sign up?

By: Julie Mason

"Stay out of Hooters." (afp photo) To help his wife retire her 2008 presidential campaign debt, former President Clinton is raffling off a day with himself in New York City. O-M-G. Reports AFP: A listing on the Federal Election Commission's website shows that Hillary Clinton's campaign is still carrying a debt of 771,000 dollars, owed to market research and consulting firm Penn, Schoen and Berland for "consulting polling/mail expenses." Mark Penn! Shouldn't he be reimbursing Hillary? At any rate, those who contribute by Monday to Hillary Clinton's still-extant campaign website are automatically entered into a drawing to hang with 42 for the day. What could that possibly include? We are giddy with the possibilities, and want every former president living...

FLASHBACK: In 2005, U.S. intelligence warned of Euro econ crisis and EU's demise unless welfare states downsized

By: Mark Hemingway
05/14/10 12:52 PM

In 2005, the National Intelligence Council prepared a prescient report warning that overextended welfare states could lead to economic crisis and possibly the collapse of the European Union sometime in the next 15 years: The experts felt that the current welfare state is unsustainable and the lack of any economic revitalization could lead to the splintering or, at worst, disintegration of the European Union, undermining its ambitions to play a heavyweight international role. The National Intelligence Council was created to develop long-term strategic thinking for the U.S. intelligence community. Obama pushing $23 billion teachers union bailout

By: Mark Hemingway

Yet another example of public sector employee union smash and grab, at a time when private sector workers are desperate for jobs: The Obama administration on Thursday threw its support behind a $23 billion measure intended to avert large-scale teacher layoffs, urging Congress to include the effort in a spending bill lawmakers are drafting to fund wartime costs and other urgent needs. "We are gravely concerned that ongoing state and local budget challenges are threatening hundreds of thousands of teacher jobs for the upcoming school year," Education Secretary Arne Duncan wrote in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). Duncan added: "These budget cuts would also undermine the groundbreaking reform efforts under way in...

Poll: More Americans pro-life than pro-choice -- 'the new normal' says Gallup

By: Mark Hemingway
05/14/10 12:12 PM

For the second straight year, Gallup says more Americans identify themselves as pro-life than pro-choice: The conservative shift in Americans' views on abortion that Gallup first recorded a year ago has carried over into 2010. Slightly more Americans call themselves "pro-life" than "pro-choice," 47% vs. 45%, according to a May 3-6 Gallup poll. This is nearly identical to the 47% to 46% division found last July following a more strongly pro-life advantage of 51% to 42% last May. The trend is pronounced enough that Gallup's headline says a pro-life majority is "the new...

California public pension fund: Whoops! We need $600 million more

By: Mark Hemingway

Surprise! CalPERS, California's ginormous public pension fund that's playing an outsize role in the state's fiscal armageddon, now says they're going to need $600 million more than last year: CalPERS, the huge public employee pension fund, is set to consider a $600 million hike in what California pays next year to cover state worker pensions. The fund's actuaries are recommending that its board tell the state to kick in $3.9 billion for the fiscal year that starts July 1. That would be a $600 million increase over this year and $400 million more than Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger planned in the first draft of his 2010-11 budget proposal. CalPERS staff figures the fund needs the increase to compensate for investment losses, longer member life expectancies and an edict by the...

Morning Must Reads -- Community organizing in Kandahar

By: Chris Stirewalt
05/14/10 9:47 AM

New York Times -- Leaders Put Different Face on Afghan Drive Warfare euphemism took a quantum leap forward this week during Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s visit to Washington. American leaders, including the commander of our forces in Afghanistan and our secretary of state, sought to downplay the violence of our troops’ pending attack on the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, the Taliban’s home turf. The word “attack” was already considered too combative and “offensive” was deemed too, well, offensive. So Hillary Clinton went with the anodyne Pentagon term “operation.” On Wednesday, Gen. Stanley McChrystal ruled out even that because it raised expectations for a “D-Day and an H-Hour and an attack.” McChrystal wants... MAYOR'S EXECUTIVE ORDER MANDATES NOTIFICATION TO HIGHER-UPS UPON ARREST
Fox News Network credits Investigative Voice with breaking story, revealing fraud

The story of a Baltimore City sex offender who remained on the Department of Public Works payroll while in jail — first reported by Investigative Voice — has now become national news.

National broadcaster Fox News Network is today (Saturday) reporting Mayor Stephanie C. Rawlings-Blake’s executive order requiring city employees who have been arrested to inform their supervisors within 24 hours.

The order was signed by Rawlings-Blake this past week following the release of a report by the office of the city's Inspector General that determined Bureau of Water and Wastewater employee Dennis J. McLaughlin was paid by the city while he was serving an eight-month jail term for sexually abusing a minor.

The network credits Investigative Voice with breaking the story.

Fox is also reporting the outcome of the investigation, which determined that city employee McLaughlin was paid $12,700 in sick pay while in jail, including 24 days of sick bank time approved by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 64 , a union representing city workers. He also received vacation and holiday pay for days when the city government was shut down, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

A few of the reasons I am not attending the Preakness today. And a few reasons I’d like to attend.

By Kevin Dayhoff http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2010/05/few-of-reasons-i-am-not-attending.html

Not withstanding the above picture, a few of the reasons I am not attending the Preakness today… And a few reasons I’d like to attend. I mean it is on the “A” list of Maryland - Baltimore must-attend cultural events.

Check out “Preakness infield through the years,” in the Baltimore Sun: http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/horse-racing/preakness/bal-preaknessinfield-pg,0,7196896.photogallery. It is a great photo spread.

Ah hem, well, this is not the staid, curmudgeon Preakness – or publication of H. L. Mencken, now is it. I guess that is a good thing – or a whatever.

Oh snap. Ya know, I'd head on down to the Preakness, but I don't seem to have a hat for the occasion.

The bikini contest pictures start at picture number three… Okay, moving on… This looks a Steffenesque view of the Preakness. Photograph number 6 - - Reason number two I did not go to the Preakness; I don't have the legs I never had.

There are perp-walk pictures sprinkled throughout the spread. Seems some folks in the past have misbehaved in the Preakness infield festivities. I’m shocked I tell you, shocked I say.

Me, I liked the hat pictures. No seriously, I really like the horsey-set fashion and hat pictures… Check out picture 33 might be my favorite – among many favorites.

The pics of the U.S. Navy's parachute team, also known as the "Leap Frogs,” are fun.

And yes folks, the day is a veritable sports lollapalooza. The pictures of the volleyball match in the infield start at number 23, followed quickly by some great pictures of ZZ Top. Picture number 29 is pretty cool.

Oh, how sophisticated… No further comment on picture number 49.

The few pictures starting at number 51 appear to portray someone who is hoping to get a Darwin award… The horses are on the track. Some of the horses’ asses may be found in the infield.

Another "Running of the Urinals" pic at 64.

Seems Westminster folks have figured somewhat prominently in the Preakness infield festivities in the past.

In picture number 67 “Aimee Gable of Westminster downs a vodka, cranberry and peach schnapps concoction supplied by Peter Perrine of Lancaster, Pa., on the infield at Pimlico Race Course. Several friends took turns at the spigot on the morning of the Preakness.” I wonder if Ms. Gable gave her Mom a copy of that picture for Mother’s Day?

Picture number 68…Oh, nevermind.

Picture number 80, ugh, just ugh.

Katie Hutchinson may be found in picture number 86 from May 17, 2008.

Between you and me, the photographs are technically and artistically quite good. A news photographer can only take pictures of what they see… I’ve love to attend the Preakness some day if only to take a bunch of pictures. As for the infield, I’m no longer as young as I never was.

‘BNE Was Here’ Stickers Investigated

‘BNE Was Here’ Stickers Investigated

I had heard of this and yet I was unable to find an explanation - until now?

Hat Tip, by following a thread that began with: Michael Yon - BNE is all over here. http://bit.ly/bh1kPt

For at least 6 months I’ve been noticing these strange ‘BNE WAS HERE’ stickers around our apartment in Yannawa.

thonglorbne1.jpg

Also around the area I’ve seen spray-painted graffiti with the same wording or ‘King BNE’.

I also noticed exactly the same stickers around Japan in Osaka and Tokyo and it finally piqued my curiosity enough to Google it. It seems that this graffiti began in San Francisco in 2006 and has certainly hit Bangkok and Tokyo and apparently New York too.

Although nothing’s been proven, the most popular belief online is that it’s the work of a prolific graffiti artist called Benet... Read the rest here: http://pavion.net/bne-was-here-stickers/

Our nation's first president may not have told a lie, but he was not without his faults

First president racks-up $300,000 in overdue library fines. http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2010/05/our-nations-first-president-may-not_15.html

May 10, 2010 by Kevin Dayhoff

The BBC is reporting that archivists in New York’s oldest library have uncovered a surprising borrower with overdue books.

It has been recently revealed that on October 5, 1789, our nation’s first president, George Washington, borrowed two books from what was then the only library in Manhattan, the New York Society Library.

According to the BBC, on October 5, 1789, a time when New York City was serving as our nation’s capital, President Washington borrowed the “Law of Nations,” a dissertation on international relations, and volume 12 of a collection of transcripts of debate transcripts from Britain's House of Commons.

Now this in itself may not be earth-shattering news.  However there is a catch.  It appears that the books were due a month later but they were never returned.

At the moment, the overdue fines for this lapse, by the president who never told a lie, have grown to $300,000.00 in the ensuing 220 years.

The BBC reports that although the library is willing to excuse the fine from the first president, it does, however, want the books back. “Sadly for fans of 18th-Century political literature, they appear to have vanished,” laments the BBC.

Locally, in Carroll County, the first library did not open until 1863, so that rules-out the opportunity for President Washington to have any overdue library fines in Carroll County.

Furthermore, the Carroll County Public Library is not aware of any president who has any overdue library books, according to Gregor Becker, an information specialist with the local library.

Our nation's first president may not have told a lie, but he was not without his faults Posted 5/10/10 by Carroll Eagle – Updated Dec. 14, 2016 - the link to the Carroll Eagle is now dead. For a while, the Baltimore Sun picked-up the stories, but alas, all the links are now dead – the link simply takes you to the Baltimore Sun…. It was updated in response to a colleague’s (CAMK) confession on Facebook that she owes the library late-fees. Too funny.
