Carroll County Times - Christian Alexandersen: Senator hopes to repeal fortune telling ban

Carroll County Times - Christian Alexandersen: Senator hopes to repeal fortune telling ban

By Christian Alexandersen  http://tinyurl.com/4p9poxh Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Soothsayers may soon be able to bring their palm and card reading talents to Carroll County if one state senator has his way.
Sen. Joseph Getty, R-District 5, said he was asked by Ariel Harper Nave, an astrologer from Westminster, to introduce legislation that repeals the county's ban on fortune tellers.
During a meeting with the Carroll County Board of Commissioners and the Carroll delegation of the General Assembly Tuesday, Getty said legislation should be introduced this session to make changes to the county's code.
Carroll's code says "a person may not demand or accept payment or gratuity to forecast or foretell, or pretend to forecast or foretell the future of another person by: 1. reading a card; 2. reading the palm of a hand; or 3. any other scheme, practice or device."
Violators of the prohibition would face up to six months in the Carroll Detention Center and/or a $100 fine...  http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/news/local/senator-hopes-to-repeal-fortune-telling-ban/article_3f99cf70-07fd-11e0-a237-001cc4c002e0.html

Eagle Archive - DAYHOFF: In Christmas past, county leaders and community celebrations made the news, By Kevin Dayhoff shar.es/Xtm5U

"...Paradoxically, at a time when we look forward to spending more time with our families, friends and loved ones, the folks who provide so much to our quality of life are spending more time away from their families than at any other time of the year.

To make matters worse, recently the weather has been frightfully cold; making matters that more unbearable.

"Please keep folks such as firefighters, police officers, teachers and public works personnel in your hearts and your prayers as you enjoy the holiday season."

[...]

It was 40 years ago that one local community leader got his start, and made the news. The now-defunct newspaper, the Community Reporter, carried an article Dec. 11, 1970, noting that "Richard N. Dixon, 32 years of age and the first black to assume a post on the Carroll County School Board, was sworn into office last week."
