WISHTATA, Libya -- Libyan fighters launched a two-pronged assault Friday on one of the last towns to resist the country's new rulers, clashing with Moammar Gadhafi's supporters inside Bani Walid as a weeklong standoff dissolved into street-to-street battles, the revolutionary forces said.

In Syria, there are no symptoms of civil war, only state brutality against peaceful protesters. Suggesting otherwise only helps justify such brutality and doubt the intentions of the protesters, even before these get a day in the sun without fear from Assad's repression.

The work of Off Track Art guest artist for Sept. and Oct. 2011 Josh Ries

September 9th, 2011 Reception: Guest Artist Josh Ries

Josh Ries is our guest artist for September-October. Josh’s passion for glass was ignited the first time he encountered glassmaking on a college trip to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning NY.

He began classes and an apprenticeship at the Art of Fire Contemporary Glass Studio in Gaithersburg, MD. Josh has studied with such Masters as Gianni Toso, Ellio Quarisa, Josh Simpson, and Dante Marioni.

He loves studying new techniques such as traditional Venetian, English, and contemporary styles of working with glass. He also loves to share his knowledge of glass with others by helping teach classes at the Art of Fire and the Corning Museum of Glass Studio.

Josh’s work can be found in many galleries and exhibits around the country. He has also exhibited at the Renwick in Washington D.C., The American Craft Council show in Baltimore, and local venues such as the Carroll County Arts Council. He has received such recognition as the Mayors artist choice award, Ocean City MD, and the Rochester NY artist excellence award.

His addiction to glass continues as he creates art with his wife, Amanda, in his studio in Littlestown, PA. Each piece he creates employs age-old Venetian and English techniques to create unique modern art glass.

Mark the date:  Friday, September 9th, 5:30-7:30 PM.

WASHINGTON, Sep 5 - Osama bin Laden didn't live to see the 10th anniversary of Sep. 11. "We're within reach of strategically defeating Al-Qaeda," Defence Secretary Leon Panetta recently observed. Others disagree, pointing to the strength of Al-Qaeda in Yemen.

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 3 - If there's one thing that net-savvy activists from Tunisia to Bahrain are aware of, it’s that the Internet isn’t always safe. From the constant threat of surveillance to the knowledge that posting the wrong picture on Facebook can get you arrested - or worse - activists have for a long time taken measures to mitigate risks, censoring themselves, using special tools like Tor, or staying off certain networks altogether.

BAGHDAD, Sep 2 - When Ali Sumerian, an editor for Al-Sabah newspaper, and three local media colleagues sat down for a restaurant meal after reporting on a demonstration in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square on Feb. 25 this year, security forces detained them. "We were accused of encouraging an anti-political process," says Sumerian. It was only after their arrest triggered a media outcry, he says, were they released 12 hours later. The four were just some of the journalists attacked and arrested that day.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Yossi Sheffi, an Israeli-born expert on risk analysis at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the TSA's policy of making air passengers remove shoes during screening:
"You don’t take your shoes off anywhere but in the U.S. — not in Israel, in Amsterdam, in London. We all know why we do it here, but this seems to be a make-everybody-feel-good thing rather than a necessity."

Kevin Dayhoff - The Tentacle: Tomorrow evening President Barack Obama will lay out his job creation proposals

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

Without a Clue
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Tomorrow evening President Barack Obama will lay out his job creation proposals in a campaign address to a joint session of Congress. The president previewed his plans Monday in a Labor Day speech in Detroit.

In short, the president said his plan would be to hold the Republican Party accountable if conservatives do not support his plan. The plan? Oh, nevermind. What plan? There is no plan except to shift the blame to the Republicans for the abysmal jobs situation across America. Yup, that’s the plan.

Just move along, people. Nothing to see here.
