Fantastic YouTube Find: A Historical View of Main Street Westminster

Gerry Wiseman created and posted this great video montage on YouTube.
&nbps;0 Comments
To go along with the historical video montage, here are some highlights of Westminster's founding.
According to a History of Westminster written by former Westminser Mayor Kevin Dayhoff, William Winchester of England founded Westminster in 1764.
Winchester originally named the community "Winchester's Town," but in 1768 the town name was changed to Westminster because the mail was often accidentally delivered to the town of Winchester in Virginia, according to Dayhoff's article.
Winchester built Westminster so it would be one day's travel, 10 miles, between Reisterstown and Taneytown. This led to Westminster quickly establishing hotels, eating establishments and provisioning stores.
Although the origin of the immigrants may have changed, there is nothing new about Westminster having an immigrant population.
According to Dayhoff, Westminster's first settlers were predominately Germans and Scotch-Irish, coming here from southern Pennsylvania. The issue of immigrants coming from bordering colonies—Germans from the north, Scotch from the west and Irish from the south—was of grave concern.

Northern Carroll Countians primarily spoke German well into the mid-1800s; English was the language of southern Carroll Countians. Westminster remained at the confluence of these three main cultural influences, according to Dayhoff's article.
These historical highlights were taken from an article on the Westminster government website, written by Kevin Dayhoff.

Corn Maze to Open in Westminster

Get lost this fall at the 2011 Carroll County Agriculture Center corn maze.

Agriculture is Carroll County’s major industry.   Can you name the top five agricultural products in the county?  This year’s corn maze at the Carroll County Ag Center lets you walk through all five.
~~~~~~
Beginning Friday, September 23, 2011, the Ag Center will feature over 3 miles of trails creatively carved out of acres of seven-foot tall corn just outside of Westminster.
The theme of this year’s maze is a celebration of Carroll County’s rich agricultural heritage.  The design in the maze recognizes Carroll County’s Top Five agricultural products
Come test your navigational skills.  Get off the couch, turn off the TV, get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air and support a worthy cause, the Carroll County Agriculture Center, home of the nationally known Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair.
Public hours are Friday and Saturday nights from 5 PM to 9 PM and Sunday afternoons from 2 PM to 7 PM.  The maze will be open weekends until October 30, 2011 and will feature a haunted maze on Saturday, October 29th, 2011.
Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for ages 3 to 12.  Group prices and times are available, call 410 848-6704.
