MarylandReporter.com: Republicans emboldened by budget mess and tax hikes: Hogan, Madden, Craig
The budget mess that has led to plans for a special
legislative session has further emboldened Republicans to seek fiscally
conservative solutions to what they see as failed policies of the Democratic
monopoly. Larry Hogan has 12,000 people in his Change Maryland group; Marty
Madden has an exploratory committee for governor and would seek public
financing; and David Craig seems the best organized.
Special sessions could throw wrench into political
fund-raising efforts; NAACP backs holding two sessions, but opinions are mixed
on how it might turn out; Rocky Gap gets slots OK and Maryland Live! set to
open in June; Sierra Club intends to block export of fracking gas; and Franchot
targets cigarette smuggling.

Venture Capitalist Forced To Defend Only Making 31,200% Return
As a venture
capitalist who really-really understood it when CODY
WILLARD wrote the following for the Wall Street Journal’s Market Watch –
“The Cody Word”:
“So Web Bubble 2.0 is
at a place where journalists and pundits and people who have never written huge
venture capital checks and seen it evaporate less than a year later (note: I
have) are criticizing someone who has just turned a quarter of a million into
three quarters of a hundred million…”
Mr. Cody’s piece, “How
to profit on this Apple stock bubble” - http://blogs.marketwatch.com/cody/2012/04/25/how-to-profit-on-this-tech-bubble/
- is an interesting read…
On top of the whole
newly minted national discussion on venture capitalists that at times has
caused my head to spin and spew pea soup through my nose…
“Apparently I’m
supposed to be angrier over what former Massachusetts Governor and venture
capitalist Mitt Romney does with his money than what President Barack Obama
does with mine…”

How to profit on this Apple stock bubble
April 25, 2012 COMMENTARY By CODY
WILLARD
I saw something recently that blew my mind and I need to
share with you. A venture capitalist having to defend making a 31,200% return —
in two years.
Seriously, read this post from Ben Horowitz,
Netscape founder Marc Andreeseen’s investing partner. They were seed
investors in Instagram, recently sold for $1 billion to Facebook… http://blogs.marketwatch.com/cody/2012/04/25/how-to-profit-on-this-tech-bubble/
[…]
Mr. Horowitz goes on to layout an ethical dilemma that
prevented his fund from participating in a follow-on round (sidebar: if you’re
getting your MBA right now, I require that you read this). But here’s the
point I want to make:
When someone is attacked for turning $250,000 into ‘only’
$78 million, we are in an enormous bubble.

Essay: Social gaming for the anti-social By Dave Gilmore
Essay: Social gaming for the anti-social
Where the social element of gaming is headed, and why it may
be at odds with our text-heavy culture
By Dave Gilmore April 18, 2012 http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/bthesite/game-cache/bal-game-cache-social-gaming-for-anti-social,0,4536599.story
This is a quandary about the future of video games, but it
also has a lot to do with text messages, phone calls, headsets and
millennials.
The backlash to the “Facebook Age” cries out for more human
connection, more “real” interactions with those in our social circles. However,
the needle seems to be moving in the other direction.
Take a poignant joke from last week’s episode of NBC’s
“Community.” Two characters in their early 20s, Troy and Annie, are mortified
that their friend Britta (late 20s) actually calls Annie’s phone. Troy
exclaims, "She was born in the '80s! She still uses her phone as a
phone!"
That’s what it has come to, hasn’t it? There was a
relatively brief period where the written word was for information, while
hearing someone’s voice was required to establish a sincere, emotional
connection. The joke used to be that breaking up with someone over email was
a faux pas, but now if it’s a well-written email, it’s almost regarded as
better than a distracted cell phone conversation in which one party will
undoubtedly assure the other that they “have full bars.”
Voice communication, while effective, is to some extent
culturally dead or dormant (who can predict these things?). Either way, the
prevailing method of social interaction now relies on something that was very
recently deemed impersonal. I don’t think the advent of emoticons have all of a
sudden advanced text communication to the point of being any more emotionally
effective than it was when texts were purely informational.
In the world of gaming, where does this leave us? In case
you haven’t already been bludgeoned with a frying pan made of articles like
this telling you that everything is becoming more tied to social media: well,
everything is becoming more tied to social media. At least for the foreseeable
future… http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/bthesite/game-cache/bal-game-cache-social-gaming-for-anti-social,0,4536599.story

Last Monday, Greg Street, a 1991 McDaniel College graduate

he journeyed from Texas to Westminster, and then South Carolina to California
and Northrend, the crescent-shaped continent in northern Azeroth, in the

For Dr. Street, it has been a long, strange, and wonderful

The audience that gathered at Decker Center Forum on the

the audience were hard-core gamers – who know Dr. Street by his screen name “Ghostcrawler” on

The World of Warcraft was first released in 1994 as

New Video-Game Magnet School Now Accepting Applications - By Susan Jones April 30, 2012 http://cnsnews.com/news/article/floridas-new-video-game-magnet-school-now-accepting-applications
From
the Miami Herald: Miami-Dade Public Schools will open its first
video-game-themed magnet program this fall, with the goal of teaching students
how to design and program video games, the Miami Herald reported on Monday.
The iTech Academy at Miami Springs Senior High School has
125 spots for the freshman class.
“We’re going to be a school that produces not only games, but
apps. It’s part of my vision,” Principal Anna Rodriguez was quoted as saying.
“I can see our students building holograms. I can really see it.”
According to the newspaper, the focus on design and coding
reflects state and national efforts to promote science, technology, engineering
and math (STEM). Proponents of video-game programs say they prepare students
for jobs in the 21st century.
In 2010-11, Florida had about 3,300 students enrolled in
game, simulation and animation courses, the Herald reported… http://cnsnews.com/news/article/floridas-new-video-game-magnet-school-now-accepting-applications
The Gamer's Diet: This cannot be healthier for you than

The Gamer's Diet: No 'Wii Fit' required
How I distract myself from cheeseburgers by leveling up
March 14, 2012 http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/bthesite/game-cache/bal-the-gamers-diet-no-wii-fit-required-20120314,0,6869976.story
We're well into 2012, and if you're like me, you've already
dropped the ball numerous times on your new year's resolutions. Like many
peers, as I approach 30, I'm trying to take better care of myself and not put
so much crap into my body.
I wanted a cheeseburger really bad the other day. However, I
had made a pledge to really buckle down on cutting out the high-octane junk
intake. The problem was I had nothing in the way between me and cheeseburger.
There were no obligations to attend to, no financial or logistical barriers
preventing me from obtaining my coveted treat. I thought I should maybe head
downstairs and hit the heavy bag or the elliptical. Then again, if I had that
kind of drive, I wouldn't need to be worrying about cheeseburgers so much.
Idle hands are the devil's playthings, and in this case my
devil was that Wendy's girl. So I picked up the controller. Within 20 minutes,
I wasn't thinking about cheeseburgers, I was thinking about buckling down and
completing all the side quests I had been putting off in "Skyrim." An
hour later, I had forgotten about the cheeseburger. It was 7 p.m. and I was
hungry like a normal person who needs food for energy and survival. Not a
person who is fueled by a predominantly cheeseburger-centric diet.
This may surprise you, but I am not a qualified
neuroscientist or behaviorist. However, I think I have stumbled upon a quirk
that exists in my own brain and perhaps yours as well. My brain has a pleasure
center. Like B.F. Skinner's rats, when I have no other pressing obligations, I
generally look for stuff to send signals to that center. There seems to be a
certain region of that center that responds to video games, junk food and
watching my favorite television shows. I think that I can divert from one by
substituting it with another. This sort of makes sense… http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/bthesite/game-cache/bal-the-gamers-diet-no-wii-fit-required-20120314,0,6869976.story

Shopping in downtown Westminster, the Carroll Community
College, the Westminster Post Office, and the Westminster Volunteer fire
Company were in the news years ago in April in Carroll County.
All too often, folks fail to remember how much planning,
fundraising, and hard work was involved to establish many of the local services
and institutions in our community that are now simply taken for granted.
The importance of courtesy in retail marketing in the
downtown Westminster shopping are was the focus of a “Courtesy Night” meeting
“held Monday evening by members of the Retail Merchants Association when they
entertained about 250 employees in the Westminster Methodist church,” according
to an April 1, 1949 newspaper article.
Today, when customer service seems more like an empty
advertising slogan, courtesy in retail shopping should go without saying.
Moreover, I have always felt that being the best is not good enough, you have
to be nice.
In the spring of 1949, the Courtesy Night “affair was held
in the lecture room of the church with the program chairman John R. Byers in
charge,” reported the now-defunct Democratic Advocate.
“Greetings were extended by President A. Willis Wampler,
Jr., He told the group that the purpose of the meeting was for the employees to
become better acquainted and more community-minded relative to retail merchandising.
“Progress in the past 25 years and the use of automobiles
have changed trends in retailing, he said. Westminster, the county seat, is
centrally located, has large free parking space and well-stocked stores with
comparable merchandise and prices, making it a convenient shopping center for a
wide area, he declared.”
And speaking of learning to adjust with the changing trends,
on April 11, 1974, “the proposed Carroll County Community College was a subject
for discussion… at a recent meeting of the Carroll County Adult Education
Advisory Committee…”
The article in the no-longer-in-print Community Reporter
said, “Consensus was that this committee strongly endorse the Community College
concept and the need for this service for adults in Carroll County.
“Of concern was the fact that Carroll County, having the
necessary population to support such a college, is the last eligible
sub-division to receive the services. Other community colleges now receiving
State support are actually receiving partial payment from Carroll County
through taxes paid to the State.”
According to the Historical Society of Carroll County; in
1899 “Carroll County was selected by the U. S. Post Office Department as the
first county to receive full Rural Free Delivery. Edwin W. Shriver was the
leading proponent of countywide service… He initiated an experimental delivery
on Easter Monday 1899 and full service was inaugurated on December 20th.”
It was on April 8, 1899 that the Democratic Advocate
reported, “The ‘Postoffice on Wheels,’ as the United States Mail Postal Wagon
is commonly called, made its first trip last Monday and is making daily trips
over the thirty miles of its route.
“The wagon has excited considerable interest in this city,
and there were quite a number of persons present to see the start last Monday.
The start had been announced for 7 o'clock, but it got off some twenty minutes
earlier, and some persons were disappointed in seeing the start that will
probably revolutionize the rural mail service of the whole country.”
