"I met Joy Covey in the mid-1990s, which is a very long time ago in Internet terms, on a trip I made to Seattle to visit the then-fledgling online bookseller Amazon.
Later, after the company had gone public, I decided to write a profile of Covey for The Wall Street Journal, for lots of reasons: Amazon was on a tear after its 1997 IPO, she was one of the few women who were top leaders in the very small Web industry and, most of all, she was a force of nature.

Actually, Joy was a force of numbers and of Wall Street and, well, of a lot of things. She left Amazon in 2000, but should be credited with being a key reason for its initial success, and also for leaving in place a structure that allowed it to soar.

Sadly, Joy, an avid athlete, died in a tragic bike accident yesterday at 50 years old, on one of the windy roads she loved in Silicon Valley. Joy had moved here in recent years after living in Park City, Utah."

BlackBerry to Cut 4,500 Jobs Following Gruesome Loss - John Paczkowski - Mobile - AllThingsD

BlackBerry to Cut 4,500 Jobs Following Gruesome Loss - John Paczkowski - Mobile - AllThingsD:

SEPTEMBER 20, 2013
http://allthingsd.com/20130920/blackberry-shares-halted/?mod=atd_email_daily_featured

"More ugly news from BlackBerry. On Friday afternoon, the company announced plans to sack 4,500 employees, as part of a massive restructuring intended to reduce expenditures by 50 percent by 2015. The reason: A horrific expected shortfall in second-fiscal-quarter earnings.

The foundering smartphone pioneer said on Friday that it expects to report revenue of about $1.6 billion for the quarter, far below the $3.04 billion for which Wall Street has been looking. It also warned of a GAAP net operating loss of between $950 million and $995 million for the quarter. That includes an inventory charge that could be as much as $960 million, and a restructuring charge of $72 million. Finally, the company said it shipped 3.7 million smartphones last quarter, down from the 6.8 million it shipped last quarter, which was itself a disappointing figure. Even worse, BlackBerry said most of those handsets don’t even run the new BlackBerry 10 operating system on which it had hoped to mount a comeback."

ICANN plan to close domain database called 'disquieting' | PCWorld

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2049164/icann-plan-to-close-domain-database-called-disquieting.html#tk.nl_today

"
A working group for Internet regulators is under severe criticism for a proposal that would put an end to the openness of the current WHOIS system for domain name registration records.

The expert working group of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has proposed (PDF document) establishing an Aggregated Registration Data Service (ARDS) for storing all records. The system would be closed by default, and people or organizations would have to convince the controlling body of a legitimate need for the data.

Currently, registrants store registration records, and anyone can go to a number of sites that use the WHOIS query and response protocol to retrieve all the public information. The working group agrees with critics that the system in use today provides too much inaccurate information, and fails to protect the privacy of individuals and entities with a legitimate right to keep the information out of the public domain.

The question of balancing privacy and access has been raised before, as far back as 2001 and in another working group in 2007, which failed to resolve the issue."

Spiritual and historical pilgrimage to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine in Emmitsburg

EAGLE ARCHIVE

Last Sunday my family and I went on a history exploration trip to nearby Emmitsburg to visit the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
We are fortunate in Carroll County to have so many great places to visit nearby.

This summer, instead of a big vacation, we opted to spend our time -- and money -- close to home to the benefit of our local economy.

Day trips may be as simple as exploring the history of a local town or traveling to national and international destinations -- such as the Gettysburg or Antietam Civil War battlefields, or the Eisenhower National Historic Farm, also in Gettysburg.

Other great history excursions here in Carroll include the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Shriver Homestead, in Union Mills, the Historical Society of Carroll County, in Westminster, and the Strawbridge Shrine -- birthplace of American Methodism -- also in New Windsor.

Because Carroll has such a large Catholic population, many folks are familiar with St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, or simply Mother Seton as she is more often referred to locally.

For those who are not: Mother Seton is the first native-born U.S. citizen to be named a saint. She was canonized by Pope Paul VI on Sept. 14, 1975.

For everyone who has benefited from a Catholic school education, Mother Seton is the spiritual founder of Catholic school education in the United States,

Of course, for television trivia aficionados, the plot of the old television show starring Sally Field, "The Flying Nun," centered on a fictional nun who belonged to Mother Seton's order. The show even contained an occasional reference to Emmitsburg.

Mother Seton was born Aug. 28, 1774, in New York City and raised in the Episcopal Church. She died of tuberculosis at age 46 on Jan. 4, 1821.

She converted to Roman Catholicism March 14, 1805 and moved to Baltimore shortly after.

Two hundred years ago, during the summer of 1809, she walked from Baltimore to Emmitsburg to found the Sisters of Charity -- and the first parochial school in the United States -- on July 31, 1809.

One would assume she traveled through our neck of the woods on that journey, though I guess I'll need further research to determine if she walked through Westminster.

Just blocks south of the main square in Emmitsburg at 333 South Seton Ave., you may find her first home, the Stone House, and her first school, the White House. There's also a museum, and the magnificent Seton Shrine Chapel, in which she is buried.

The chapel was designated a "Minor Basilica" by Pope John Paul II on Aug. 4, 1991.

The shrine in her honor in Emmitsburg is a pilgrimage for folks all over the globe. But for those of us who live in Carroll, the international destination is less than 50 miles round trip -- and makes for a spiritually moving and truly meaningful experience.

About.com Larry West: Reduce the Amount of Junk Mail You Receive by 90 Percent

How to Stop Receiving Junk Mail

Reduce the Amount of Junk Mail You Receive by 90 Percent

From Larry West, former About.com Guide

Undated - Retrieved September 23, 2013

If you’re interested in living a more eco-friendly lifestyle, here’s something you can do that will help protect the environment and preserve your sanity: reduce the amount of junk mail you receive by 90 percent.

According to information from sources such as the Center for a New American Dream (CNAD)—a Maryland-based nonprofit organization that helps people consume responsibly to protect the environment, enhance quality of life, and promote social justice—reducing the amount of junk mail you receive will save energy, natural resources, landfill space, tax dollars, and a lot of your personal time. For example:

5.6 million tons of catalogs and other direct mail advertisements end up in U.S. landfills annually.

The average American household receives unsolicited junk mail equal to 1.5 trees every year—more than 100 million trees for all U.S. households combined.

44 percent of junk mail is thrown away unopened, but only half that much junk mail (22 percent) is recycled.

Americans pay $370 million annually to dispose of junk mail that doesn’t get recycled.

On average, Americans spend 8 months opening junk mail in the course of their lives… Read more: http://environment.about.com/od/greenlivingdesign/a/junkmail.htm

Radios failed during Navy Yard attack, first responders say

News from The Hill:

Radios failed during Navy Yard attack, first responders say

By Kevin Bogardus

Radios for federal firefighters and police officers failed during Monday’s mass shooting at Washington’s Navy Yard, according to union representatives for first responders.

Union officials said police and firefighters resorted to using their cell phones and radios from D.C.’s emergency responders to communicate with each other during the attack.

Initially, officers found that their radios were working. But as they ventured deeper into the building where the shooting took place, their equipment stopped functioning.

“They had to use their cellphone to just call out and tell them what's going on,” said Anthony Meely, chairman of the Fraternal Order of Police Naval District Washington (NDW) Labor Committee.

News from The Hill: Angry House Republicans demand better communication By Molly K. Hooper

News from The Hill:

Angry House Republicans demand better communication

By Molly K. Hooper

Republican lawmakers are growing increasingly frustrated with what they say is a lack of communication from their leaders.

Both centrist and conservative members in the House believe that Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and his lieutenants could have done more earlier this year to counter the Tea Party's effort to defund ObamaCare.

Some Republicans on Capitol Hill say such an effort is politically impossible with a Democratic-controlled Senate and a Democrat in the White House. Regardless, the rift on what to do on ObamaCare has opened up a civil war within the GOP.

That deep division is flaring at a time when fiscal showdowns are front and center following the August recess.
