Westminster's Fallfest continues a proud tradition

Westminster's Fallfest continues a proud tradition

By Kevin Dayhoff, September 25, 2013

Westminster’s annual Fallfest celebration begins Thursday with a parade at 7 p.m. that starts on Pennsylvania Avenue and ends just below Westminster City Hall on Longwell Avenue.

Fallfest, which boasts on its website, westminsterfallfest.com, to be “Carroll County’s largest community charity event,” then continues four days through Sunday in the center of downtown Westminster at the playground and the Westminster Family Center.

For many it is one of the highlights of the year -- a time when the greater Carroll County family gets together to celebrate everything that is wonderful about our community.

Friday evening, Sept. 27, highlights the annual Midnight Madness celebration of shopping and eating-out on Main Street in downtown Westminster.

Fallfest hours for Friday are 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 12 noon to 6 p.m.

[…]

Although there are anecdotal stories of various community fall celebrations throughout Westminster’s history; our current version of “Fallfest,” the annual parade and Midnight Madness specifically draw upon a tradition that started many years ago when Westminster came together in September for an event sponsored by the Retail Merchants Association called “Westminster Days.”

An August 29th, 1947 article in the old, out-of-print Democratic Advocate newspaper reported, “At the weekly luncheon meeting on Monday at the Charles Carroll Hotel the Retail Merchants Association of this city, plans were completed for the Westminster Days which will be held on Sept. 25 and 26. President John R. Byers presided.”

The article then described a big parade on Thursday evening and two days of downtown merchant sales on September 25th and 26th, 1947.

Westminster celebrates diversity at Tristreet block party

Westminster celebrates diversity at Tristreet block party

By Kevin Dayhoff, 3:45 p.m. EDT, September 17, 2013

Fully equipped with a spatula, sunglasses, hat and an apron, Darcel Harris was all smiles Sept. 15 as she answered questions, cooked hamburgers and hot dogs and helped coordinate activities for over 300 folks who attended the 11th annual Pennsylvania Avenue – Tristreet Association block party in Dutterer Family Park in Westminster.

The event included multi-cultural food dishes made by residents, local fruits and vegetables donated by local farmers, dancing, pie eating contests, and educational activities for children provided by the Westminster Police Department, the Carroll County NAACP and GROW Mission (God’s Regeneration of Westminster) – one of the many local grassroots community organizations in which Harris participates.

According to Harris, the March 2013 recipient of the of the 21st annual Carroll County Human Relations Commission achievement award, the neighborhood get together was the brainchild of former Westminster City Councilwoman, 1991-1995, Rebecca Orenstein.

Orenstein, 71, recently passed away on Aug. 31.

San Antonio Passes Far-Reaching Antidiscrimination Measure

San Antonio Passes Far-Reaching Antidiscrimination Measure

By MANNY FERNANDEZ Published: September 5, 2013

HOUSTON — Nearly 200 cities across the country have enacted ordinances in recent years that prohibit bias by municipal employees or in city contracts over someone’s race, sex, age, religion or sexual orientation. Houston, Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth are a few of the Texas cities that adopted such measures.

But in San Antonio, a nondiscrimination ordinance that includes protections for sexual orientation and gender identity turned into a divisive political battle this summer, the likes of which this liberal-leaning city of 1.4 million has rarely seen in recent decades.

The City Council passed the measure, 8 to 3, on Thursday, capping weeks of heated debate that exposed racial, religious and gay-and-straight divisions and drew the scorn of Republican leaders and candidates around the state who are just starting to position themselves for next spring’s primary elections.

The Texas attorney general, Greg Abbott, who has been running for governor since Gov. Rick Perry announced he was not seeking re-election, weighed in on the issue, expressing his opposition. The state agriculture commissioner, Todd Staples, who is running for lieutenant governor — and who as a state senator sponsored the constitutional amendment that passed in 2005 that defined marriage in Texas as between one man and one woman — also spoke out against it.

"I met Joy Covey in the mid-1990s, which is a very long time ago in Internet terms, on a trip I made to Seattle to visit the then-fledgling online bookseller Amazon.
Later, after the company had gone public, I decided to write a profile of Covey for The Wall Street Journal, for lots of reasons: Amazon was on a tear after its 1997 IPO, she was one of the few women who were top leaders in the very small Web industry and, most of all, she was a force of nature.

Actually, Joy was a force of numbers and of Wall Street and, well, of a lot of things. She left Amazon in 2000, but should be credited with being a key reason for its initial success, and also for leaving in place a structure that allowed it to soar.

Sadly, Joy, an avid athlete, died in a tragic bike accident yesterday at 50 years old, on one of the windy roads she loved in Silicon Valley. Joy had moved here in recent years after living in Park City, Utah."

BlackBerry to Cut 4,500 Jobs Following Gruesome Loss - John Paczkowski - Mobile - AllThingsD

BlackBerry to Cut 4,500 Jobs Following Gruesome Loss - John Paczkowski - Mobile - AllThingsD:

SEPTEMBER 20, 2013
http://allthingsd.com/20130920/blackberry-shares-halted/?mod=atd_email_daily_featured

"More ugly news from BlackBerry. On Friday afternoon, the company announced plans to sack 4,500 employees, as part of a massive restructuring intended to reduce expenditures by 50 percent by 2015. The reason: A horrific expected shortfall in second-fiscal-quarter earnings.

The foundering smartphone pioneer said on Friday that it expects to report revenue of about $1.6 billion for the quarter, far below the $3.04 billion for which Wall Street has been looking. It also warned of a GAAP net operating loss of between $950 million and $995 million for the quarter. That includes an inventory charge that could be as much as $960 million, and a restructuring charge of $72 million. Finally, the company said it shipped 3.7 million smartphones last quarter, down from the 6.8 million it shipped last quarter, which was itself a disappointing figure. Even worse, BlackBerry said most of those handsets don’t even run the new BlackBerry 10 operating system on which it had hoped to mount a comeback."
