Snowtastrophe - These days big government cannot get anything right.

Friday, Jan. 22, 2015 Kevin Dayhoff

At a time when many Americans have lost faith in government and our government’s ability to do anything with any degree of integrity, capability, or competence, comes the snowtastrophe Wednesday night in the capital of the free world, the most powerful nation on earth, Washington DC.

Read: Forget ISIS. The most powerful city on earth can’t handle a dusting of snow. By Petula Dvorak Columnist January 21 at 11:51 AM https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/forget-isis-the-most-powerful-city-on-earth-cant-handle-a-dusting-of-snow/2016/01/21/7e1a7a7a-c04d-11e5-bcda-62a36b394160_story.html

Or: An inch of snow, icy roads unleash 9 hours of traffic chaos across D.C. region By Fred Barbash and Justin Wm. Moyer January 21, 2016 - https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/01/21/an-inch-of-snow-icy-roads-unleash-9-hours-of-traffic-chaos-across-d-c-region/

I received first-person testimony by a family member who spend 3 hours on the road in the paralytic chaos that was Washington last Wednesday night in what might normally take 30 minutes.

No amount of hype or hyperbole can exaggerate how incompetent the response to barely an inch of snow last Wednesday in Washington DC.

Not to be overlooked is the reputation of the Washington DC metro subway system. Words such as unsafe, unreliability, unpredictable, and unreliable come to mind. SMH.

Whether it is providing healthcare to veterans, providing safe drinking water, or punishing the innocent when they get on an airplane, government has proven to be incompetent and incapable of the even of the smallest, simplest, and easiest tasks. Look at the bloated bureaucracy that has swallowed the postal system.

Look at the government regulations that have over-bureaucratized the financial industry and sickened healthcare reform. Government has brought financial institutions and the medical health care delivery system to its knees with the extra costs and counter-productive and conflicting regulations that have increased the costs of delivering these vital services to Americans through the roof.

These days big government cannot get anything right. We should all be ashamed.

Meanwhile Petula Dvorak wrote about the response by the capital of the free world to less than an inch of snow last Wednesday night.

She wrote, “As we’ve proved before, we’re not good at snow. And on Wednesday night, we proved it again in utterly humiliating fashion, morphing from a powerful city of powerful people into a demolition-derby, wagon-training cold mess.

A one-inch snowtastrophe involving at least 1,000 accidents, eight-hour commutes and cars abandoned on freeways by desperate, disgusted commuters. Some people hadn’t even made it home by dawn Thursday.

[…]

It was a nearly perfect deja vu of a light snow in 2011 that generated epic Twitter travelogues of misery. Only difference this time? It was more fun to Snapchat the whole calamity.

We’re all worried about ISIS when the truth is, all it takes to destroy us is a little ice.

Hilarious Memes Emerge After Inch of Snow Paralyzes DC Area, By AVIANNE TAN Jan 21, 2016 - http://abcnews.go.com/US/hilarious-memes-emerge-snow-paralyzes-dc-area/story?id=36421982

Hilarious memes are emerging on social media after Washington, D.C., was paralyzed by an inch of snow Wednesday night.

You read that right: An inch of snow.

The snow caused slick conditions on roads. Over 125 accidents were reported, according to police, and hundreds of drivers trapped in traffic complained of nine-hour long standstills.

"One inch of snow did this. One. Inch. Of. Snow," one Twitter user wrote of what some have jokingly dubbed as "Snowmadeggon" and "Carmageddon."

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser apologized this morning for the city's "inadequate" response Wednesday night and said officials are "very sorry."
Users on Twitter and other social media are now posting hilarious memes and jokes about the "inch of snow" disaster:

“Horrible.” “Pathetic.” “Painful.” “Unbelievable.” “One inch of snow did this.”

From every corner of the region and into the wee hours of the morning, from every highway and byway, motorists vented their anger and frustration that they were still out there — at 1 a.m., then 2 a.m. and still at 3 a.m. — because of ice and untreated roads, from a modest early-evening snowfall that came and went in a few hours.

Maryland Snowmageddon Snowpocalypse French Toast Dec. 18, 2016 kevindayhoff.com http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2016/01/maryland-snowmageddon-snowpocalypse.html

Immediately upon seeing out first flakes of snow while driving home on I-270 from Fairfax Virginia just after midnight, Monday morning, Jan. 18, 2016; Caroline and I remained calm – but immediately declared a “Code French Toast.” (The bridges were very icy…)

However, inconvenience struck quickly as all the grocery stores in Westminster were closed by around 1:45 a.m. We settled-upon the 7-Eleven at the corner of Rte. 140 and Center Street, and retreated to our house.

Later on Tuesday, I once again ventured forth in search of wild, free-range carrots and all the necessities to make “Maryland Snowmageddon Snowpocalypse French Toast” at the local Safeway – before mania and hysteria struck.

We are now settled-in fully prepared for the end of days as snowflakes conspire to descent upon Maryland. May God save us – and God Save the Queen.

Maryland State Police: Caution Urged As Snow Storm Moves In

(Pikesville, MD) – Maryland State Police are urging drivers to use caution and think twice before heading out this weekend due to the potential snow storm.
Here are recommendations from state troopers:

Stay home this weekend unless the nature of your employment requires you to travel (emergency responder, medical profession, snow removal etc.);

Maryland State Police will begin towing vehicles currently abandoned more than 24 hours prior to the storms arrival;

Once the snow emergency plan is put in place for a particular county, abandoned vehicles will be towed immediately;

If you have to drive, ensure you are driving a vehicle equipped for snow travel;

Don’t abandon your vehicle on a snow emergency route (interstate, MD or US route) without notifying Maryland State Police or the police agency responsible for that particular roadway;

If you have called a private tow to remove your vehicle, let Maryland State Police know so we don’t dispatch resources to have it removed;

If you have an accident, move your vehicle out of the travel portion of the roadway if possible and contact Maryland State Police;

Give snow plows room to work and do not try to pass a plow train;

If your vehicle is towed, contact the barrack or local police agency where it was abandoned with a full description (make, model, tag number and exact location) so the towing company information can be provided to you for pickup;

“For this snow storm, drivers should make informed decisions before they leave home because once you are on the highway, it may be too late to change your mind,” Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel William M. Pallozzi said. “Make every effort to say off the highways if at all possible during the snow storm. Troopers are ready to address traffic crashes and delays and will be working in coordination with the State Highway Administration, Maryland Emergency Management Agency and other related agencies.”

Drivers can take advantage of the live traffic cameras made available by the State Highway Administration. The traffic cameras are positioned at various locations throughout Maryland and can give drivers important information about their route of travel before leaving.  The cameras and other real-time traffic information can be found by visiting www.roads.maryland.gov  and clicking on “commuter” and then clicking on “live traffic.” Additional information concerning road conditions can be obtained on line at www.511md.org  or by calling 5-1-1.

Citizens are urged not to call Maryland State Police barrack to simply check on road conditions. Calls to police or 9-1-1 centers during the storm should be for emergency situations only.

Troopers will again be working with State Highway Administration’s Coordinated Highway Action Response Team and tow companies throughout the state to remove abandoned vehicles so that snow removal operations can be efficiently conducted. When snow emergency plans are placed into effect, motorists are not permitted to park on the shoulders of an interstate or state highway and vehicles left there will be towed.

Motorists whose vehicles are towed from an interstate or a state highway by State Police can determine where their vehicles were taken by contacting the Maryland State Police barrack in the county where they abandoned their vehicles. A complete list of barracks can be found at the Maryland State Police website at www.mdsp.maryland.gov . Commercial vehicles are invited to wait out the storm at one of the Maryland State Police scale house parking lots that will be available overnight. These locations are also available on the State Police website at http://mdsp.maryland.gov/Organization/Pages/InspectionFacilities.aspx.

And Freedys got spots from ripping off the stars
From his face, funky little boat race

All the young dudes
(Hey dudes!)

Boogaloo dudes
(Stand up, come on)
Carry the news

All the young dudes
(I wanna hear you)
Carry the news
(I wanna see you)
Boogaloo dudes
(And I wanna talk to you, all of you)

But he can kick like a mule, its a real mean team
But we can love, oh yes we can love

And my brothers back at home with his Beatles and his Stones
We never got it off on that Revolution stuff
What a drag, too many snags

Now I drunk a lot of wine and Im feeling fine
Gotta race some cat to bed
Oh is there concrete all around or is it in my head?
Yeah, Im a dude dad

All the young dudes
(Hey dudes!)
Carry the news
(Where are ya?)
Boogaloo dudes
(Stand up)
Carry the news

All the young dudes

Carry the news
(I wanna see you)
Boogaloo dudes
(And I wanna relate to you)

Historical Society to throw Carroll County a birthday party

Sat. Jan. 16, 2016

By Heather Mongilio

Carroll County is turning 179, and the Historical Society of Carroll County is throwing it a birthday party.

The party is from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster. There will be a talk on one the county's founders, John Longwell, cupcakes and refreshments. The event is free.

The Historical Society throws the county a party every year as a way to raise awareness about Carroll's history, executive director Gainor Davis said.

"I think it's an amazing thing to have a county that's been around 179 years and continues to thrive," Davis said.

The event will start with a talk by former Westminster Mayor Kevin Dayhoff on Longwell, shortly after 2 p.m. The talk should last about 45 minutes, Davis said.

People are welcome to join at any time. Cake and punch will start around 3 p.m.

"It's basically a time for us to introduce people to a little bit of their history," Davis said.

Longwell founded The Carrolltonian, a newspaper that was crucial to the founding of the county. He lived at Emerald Mill mansion, which was recently bought by the historical society, she said.

The Historical Society recently moved into the mansion, holding its annual Winter Wine Warmer there last weekend. The society hopes to open an exhibit about Greek heritage in the county in Emerald Hill mansion in the spring, Davis said.

Colonel John Klinehoff Longwell was a Carroll County founding father who lived from 1810 to 1896.

Colonel Longwell was a newspaper publisher. At the age of 23, Longwell established the Carrolltonian newspaper in 1833 and proceeded to play a leading role in the formation of Carroll County out of parts of Frederick and Baltimore Counties, in January 1837 - and took an active part in all of its affairs. He became widely known as a civic and financial leader in the county.

In 1842 he established a farm just outside of town, north of Westminster and began construction of a huge mansion home on his estate he called “Emerald Hill.” He was elected State Senator in 1850 and 1871; president of Baltimore and Reisterstown Turnpike in 1858; was a director of the Union National Bank and later served as the bank president 39 years from 1857 to 1896. He also served as a Carroll County Commissioner.

Longwell also helped establish the Westminster English and Mathematical Academy, the West End Academy and the Westminster Female Institute; and served as a board trustee for Western Maryland College.

Col. Longwell will be the topic of a presentation at the county’s annual birthday celebration at Grace Lutheran Church on Sat. Jan 16, 2016.
