THE LIMITS WITH JAY WILLIAMS

Brian Flores on Taking a Stand Against the NFL

February 3, 2022 • Brian Flores is not messing around. The former Miami Dolphins head coach was fired last month, and had his eyes set on the top job with the New York Giants. But a misdirected text from New England Patriots general manager Bill Belichick convinced Flores, who is Black and Latino, that the hiring process was rigged against him, and that race was a major factor. He responded to the NFL by filing a class-action lawsuit on Tuesday. He was one of only three Black head coaches in the NFL at the time of his firing, in a league that has a majority of Black players. The lawsuit accuses the league of systemic racism and discriminatory hiring practices. It's made for a whirlwind 48 hours for Flores, who did not come to the decision to take legal action lightly. And it's arguably a louder stand than when Colin Kaepernick took his knee and paid the price. In this episode of The Limits, host Jay Williams sits down with Flores to talk about the change he hopes to inspire in the NFL, and the sacrifices he's willing to make to see that change take flight. Send Me - Jenn Johnson feat. Chris Quilala

“Send Me” was the ‘Song of the Day’ in the contemporary service at Grace Lutheran Church on Sunday, February 6, 2022. It is certainly one of my favorites. Especially since I always associate it with one of my favorite Bible passages – and a favorite of many first responders: Isaiah 6 verses 1-8, especially verse 8: Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

"Send Me" Jenn Johnson feat. Chris Quilala. Premiered Sep 28, 2021. "Send Me" was written by Brandon Lake, Jenn Johnson, and Kari Jobe Carnes.

VERSE 1
If it’s bandaging the broken
Or washing filthy feet
Here I am Lord, send me
If it’s loving one another
Even when we don’t agree
Here I am Lord, send me

VERSE 2
If I’m poor or if I’m wealthy
I’ll serve You just the same
Here I am Lord, send me
On the mountain or the valley
I will choose to praise
Here I am Lord, send me

CHORUS
If I’m known by how I love
Let my life reflect how much I love You
I love You
And before You even ask
Oh my answer will be yes
‘Cause I love You
Oh I love You

VERSE 3
If the truth cuts like an arrow
I will say it anyway
‘Cause here I am Lord, send me
If it’s means that they’ll reject me
Lord I will still obey
‘Cause here I am Lord, send me

VERSE 4
When I’m standing in Your glory
I’ll be glad I chose to say
Here I am Lord, send me
Well done good and faithful
I live to hear You say
Here I am Lord, send me

TAG
Here I am Lord, send me
Here I am Lord, send me

SPONTANEOUS
Oh how I love You
With everything
With all my dreams, all my hopes
How I love You
You can have it all, You can have it all
You can have it all
What I have I give You God
Be it unto me according to Your word

February is Black History Month

February is Black History Month. The annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history can trace its origins to 1926, when a black scholar named Carter G. Woodson launched a week-long campaign to focus national attention on the contributions of black people on American society. Submitted photo

On January 26, 1931, Westminster Firefighter Joe Hahn died.

Honoring & Remembering Maryland Fallen Heroes. Westminster Fire Eng. & Hose Co.1~Carroll County, Maryland

On January 26, 1931, our brothers and sisters in the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 and the greater Carroll County community suffered one the two Line of Duty Deaths in the company's history when Fireman Joseph G. Hahn died.

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on Monday January 26,1931, the Westminster Fire Engine & Hose Co.No.1 responded to the Oscar Hess residence, on the Manchester State Road near Cranberry, for a gasoline stove explosion in the kitchen.

The flames were quickly extinguished by the Westminster firemen. The kitchen was mostly destroyed from the blast, but the rest of the house was saved, having suffered only smoke damage and some broken windowpanes.

While the firemen were performing salvage and overhaul, Fireman Joseph G. Hahn suffered a heart attack and fell over. Before medical aid could be summoned, death occurred.

Fireman Joseph G. Hahn was 46 years old. Number of years served is unknown at this time.

Former Westminster police officer Don Hood has died at age 80.

Former Westminster police officer Don Hood has died at age 80.

Don Hood, 80; of Westminster, formerly of Sykesville, passed away on Friday, January 21, 2022, at Bridging Life (Dove House) in Westminster.

I am not sure when Westminster Police Officer Don Hood started with Westminster. I remember him from the 1970s. He retired as a corporal. I always found it interesting that he was an airplane pilot. He probably left the agency in the early 1980s. Cpl Hood was known as a patient, kind and understanding police officer. He was always quick to praise and encourage. He served in the National Guard, and many credited his military service as the source of his calm demeaner and command presence. He is survived by his wife, Janet.

According to his obit – he was born on November 26, 1941, in Westminster, he was the son of the late Crawmer Andrew Hood "Bud" and Edith (Jackson) (Hood) Germroth "Jackie".

Don was a 1960 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School. He was a retired grocer for Safeway, a former Westminster City police officer and served in the Army National Guard.

He was a member of the Meadow Branch Church of The Brethren where he enjoyed working at the churches pancake breakfasts. His hobbies included RVing, boating, riding his motorcycle, but his greatest passion was flying his airplane.

Don is survived by his loving wife Janet (Wolfe) Hood of 61 years. He was a cherished father of Terri Newsome and husband Johnny, and Donna Eppler and husband Thomas; beloved grandfather of Courtney (Imler) Quintano, Nathan Newsome, Lindsey Eppler and Riley Eppler; great grandfather of Madalyn Quintano. Besides his parents he was pre-deceased by his siblings John W. Hood, Robert A. Hood and Carol G. Baker.

The family will receive family and friends on Saturday, March 12, 2022, from 11:00-12:30 with a Celebration of Life Service immediately following at the Meadow Branch Church of the Brethren. 818 Old Taneytown Rd. Westminster MD 21158.

Memorial contributions may be made to Meadow Branch Church of the Brethren or the Salvation Army of Carroll County, 300 Hahn Rd, Westminster MD. 21157 or online at http://www.salvationarmyusa.org.

The Women Who Rode Miles on Horseback to Deliver Library Books

The Women Who Rode Miles on Horseback to Deliver Library Books - Librarians are amazing. BY ANIKA BURGESS AUGUST 31, 2017

I was looking for Erin Snell in the pictures…

FTA: They were known as the “book women.” They would saddle up, usually at dawn, to pick their way along snowy hillsides and through muddy creeks with a simple goal: to deliver reading material to Kentucky’s isolated mountain communities.

The Pack Horse Library initiative was part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA), created to help lift America out of the Great Depression, during which, by 1933, unemployment had risen to 40 percent in Appalachia. Roving horseback libraries weren’t entirely new to Kentucky, but this initiative was an opportunity to boost both employment and literacy at the same time.

[…]

Old magazines and newspapers were cut and pasted into scrapbooks with particular themes—recipes, for example, or crafts. One such scrapbook, which still is held today at the FDR Presidential Library & Museum in Hyde Park, New York, contains recipes pasted into a notebook with the following introduction: “Cook books are popular. Anything to do with canning or preserving is welcomed.”

Coins left on tombstones

Coins left on tombstones

Author unknown - from multiple media sources.

American Legion Obituaries – Click here to read the obituaries of members of Carroll Post 31 American Legion in Westminster who have passed away: https://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/search/label/American%20Legion%20Obituary

Have you ever been in a cemetery and saw coins laying on a tombstone? There is actually a reason behind it.

While visiting some cemeteries you may notice that headstones marking certain graves have coins on them, left by previous visitors to the grave.

These coins have distinct meanings when left on the headstones of those who gave their life while serving in America's military, and these meanings vary depending on the denomination of coin.

A coin left on a headstone or at the grave site is meant as a message to the deceased soldier's family that someone else has visited the grave to pay respect.

Leaving a penny at the grave means simply that you visited.

A nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together, while a dime means you served with him in some capacity.

By leaving a quarter at the grave, you are telling the family that you were with the solider when he was killed.

According to tradition, the money left at graves in national cemeteries and state veterans cemeteries is eventually collected, and the funds are put toward maintaining the cemetery or paying burial costs for indigent veterans.

In the US, this practice became common during the Vietnam War, due to the political divide in the country over the war; leaving a coin was seen as a more practical way to communicate that you had visited the grave than contacting the soldier's family, which could devolve into an uncomfortable argument over politics relating to the war.

Some Vietnam veterans would leave coins as a "down payment" to buy their fallen comrades a beer or play a hand of cards when they would finally be reunited.

The tradition of leaving coins on the headstones of military men and women can be traced to as far back as the Roman Empire.

Thich Nhat Hanh, influential Zen Buddhist monk, dies at 95

Thich Nhat Hanh, influential Zen Buddhist monk, dies at 95

Nhat Hanh distilled Buddhist teachings on compassion and suffering into easily grasped guidance over a lifetime dedicated to working for peace.

Jan. 21, 2022, 11:47 PM EST / Updated Jan. 22, 2022, 12:31 AM EST
By The Associated Press

HANOI, Vietnam — Thich Nhat Hanh, the revered Zen Buddhist monk who helped pioneer the concept of mindfulness in the West and socially engaged Buddhism in the East, has died. He was 95.

A post on Nhat Hanh’s verified Twitter page attributed to The International Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism confirmed the news. The post said Nhat Hanh, known as Thay to his followers, died at midnight Saturday.

“We invite our beloved global spiritual family to take a few moments to be still, to come back to our mindful breathing, as we together hold Thay in our hearts," the post said.

Born as Nguyen Xuan Bao in 1926 and ordained at age 16, Nhat Hanh distilled Buddhist teachings on compassion and suffering into easily grasped guidance over a lifetime dedicated to working for peace. In 1961 he went to the United States to study, teaching comparative religion for a time at Princeton and Columbia universities.

For most of the remainder of his life he lived in exile at Plum Village, a retreat center he founded in southern France.

There and in talks and retreats around the world, he introduced Zen Buddhism, at its essence, as peace through compassionate listening. Still and steadfast in his brown robes, he exuded an air of watchful, amused calm, sometimes sharing a stage with the somewhat livelier Tibetan Buddhist leader Dalai Lama.

“The peace we seek cannot be our personal possession. We need to find an inner peace which makes it possible for us to become one with those who suffer, and to do something to help our brothers and sisters, which is to say, ourselves,” Nhat Hanh wrote in one of his dozens of books, “The Sun My Heart.”
