2018 winners of the annual Mike Eaton scholarship announced

2018 winners of the annual Mike Eaton scholarship announced

The Historical Society of Carroll County announces the 2018 winners of the annual Mike Eaton scholarship.

Since 2011 The Historical Society of Carroll County has been awarding the Mike Eaton Scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to honor the memory of William Granville “Mike” Eaton, an English teacher at Westminster High School from 1935 to 1971. He also directed plays and advised the Key Club. He inspired his students to challenge and improve themselves in many ways. He always believed in the great potential of his students to excel, and they have proven him correct.

Mr. Eaton brought panache to his classroom with his deck of index cards from which he pulled the targets of his well-placed questions. The cards brought their share of insecurity to the ill prepared, but Westminster High School seniors began to discover something, Shakespeare wasn't so bad after all. Mr. Eaton commanded the classroom. Heading the Drama Club at Westminster High School, he also commanded excellence in theatrical offerings.

Mr. Eaton was born in Centerville, Maryland and passed away from cancer in 1995. He graduated from Western Maryland College in 1930 and subsequently went on to earn his Master’s degree at Columbia University in New York.

For over three decades, Mike Eaton was Thelma Hoffman’s star boarder at Hoffman’s Inn, now owned by the Historical Society of Carroll County and known as Cockey’s Tavern, its name from when it was built in 1820.

The Mike Eaton Scholarship has been established through the Historical Society of Carroll County to recognize inspirational teachers, like Mr. Eaton, in the lives of the current graduating class of Westminster High School. The winning students wrote an essay about their most inspirational teacher.

Two Mike Eaton scholarships were awarded this spring to graduating seniors from Westminster High School. The teachers in the winning essays were also recognized at the Westminster High School awards ceremonies on June 4, 2018.

The two winning students were Margie Spann and Richard Folderauer. They each received a $500.00 scholarship and their most influential teacher received an engraved school bell.

Mr. Folderauer named Mrs. Melissa Purdy as his most influential teacher. Ms. Spann named Mrs. Kim Saltsburg as her most influential teacher.

Like Mr. Eaton, Mrs. Purdy is the Westminster High School drama teacher. According to Mr. Folderauer, every year Mrs. Purdy puts her heart, mind, and soul into three productions. She is a director, mentor, and friend to her students. She teaches kids from all walks of life the importance and the joy of performing. By doing that, she gives her students a love for performing and has inspired Richard Folderauer to inspire others with that love of performing.

Ms. Spann called Ms. Saltsburg an inspirational teacher whom she said was energetic, humorous, and beaming. She made interactive lessons that inspired Spann to anticipate going to class, look forward to studying for tests, and yearn to learn more. All of this happened in Mrs. Saltsburg’s Human Anatomy and Physiology class. While she introduced many to the pungent smell of formaldehyde; in the process she helped Margie Spann flourish in class and introduced her to the medical field, as she now plans to become a doctor.

Mr. Folderauer and Ms. Spann will both be attending the University of Maryland, College Park.

The Historical Society is pleased to be sponsoring this scholarship in memory of Mike Eaton who was an influential and memorable teacher at Westminster High School for over 35 years.

Kevin Dayhoff Eagle Archive Mike Eaton inspired a love of Carroll living

In a 2009 edition of the Historical Society of Carroll County publication, Carroll Courier, there is a picture dated March 1, 1950, of 5-year old Sally Adams with her cocker spaniel, Ricky, in front of Hoffman's Inn, 216 E. Main St., Westminster.

The photo accompanied a first-hand personal account of life on East Main Street and at Hoffman's Inn, from 1945 to 1961. The property is now known as Historical Society's gift shop, the Shop at Cockey's.

Early history of the property, which dates back to the 1820s, is complicated and reads like a Victorian soap opera. Nevertheless, it's where a great deal of the planning and creation of Carroll County took place. After the county was formed, Cockey's served for many years as part of the seat of county government.

"In 1922 Frank and Mary Hoffman bought the building and it became Hoffman's Inn and Boarding House. It was inherited by their daughter and operated by Thelma Hoffman until 1969."

William Granville "Mike" Eaton lived on the third floor of Hoffman's Inn for many years. Eaton came to Westminster in 1926 to attend then-Western Maryland College, now McDaniel, where he graduated in 1930. It was in that year that he began his teaching career at Elmer A. Wolfe High School in Union Bridge… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/neighborhoods/westminster/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0317-20130313,0,5153633.story

Most folks in Carroll County have “indubitably” heard of William Granville “Mike” Eaton at some point in their life.“Well, I do declare,” if you are not familiar with Eaton or his extensive legacy in our community, “this too shall pass,” as I will, may “God help ... ...

Kevin E. Dayhoff  Almost everyone can reminisce back to the days of their youth and recall the influence of a favorite childhood teacher. For me, I loved school and I have a number of favorite teachers; however, the first among many may very well be my 12th-grade English teacher, William Granville (“Mike”) Eaton.

A Legacy of Learning Lives On

The Babylon Family of Westminster

and the Historical Society of Carroll County

Announces the Creation of a Lasting Memorial to

William Granville (“Mike”) Eaton

William Granville “Mike” Eaton (1908) was a renaissance man until he died in 1995,

For 41 years, Mike Eaton taught English and drama in Carroll County schools, 38 of those years at Westminster High School. Always he demanded excellence.

He gave to his community through the Westminster Kiwanis Club. He gave to the community through his affiliation with Grace Lutheran Church. He produced memorable theatrical offerings as coach of the Westminster High School Drama Club.

Eaton nurtured future leaders through the Kiwanis Key Club and inspired many students, friends and colleagues to higher glory. Among his students was writer (On Golden Pond), director and actor Ernest Thompson whose work has won him an Oscar, a Golden Globe and Writer’s Guild of America awards. Although best known perhaps, Thompson is not the only student Eaton inspired to excel in the creative arts.

For over three decades, Mike Eaton was Thelma Hoffman’s star boarder at Hoffman’s Inn, now owned by the Historical Society of Carroll County and known as Cockey’s as it was known when built in 1820.

In life Mike Eaton was roasted and toasted. In death he is being memorialized in the room that was his very own at Cockey’s.

Under the partnership of the David Babylon family of Westminster and the Historical Society of Carroll County, former students, friends and colleagues are building a lasting memorial with a lofty but achievable goal.

The first $10,000 has been raised to open the Mike Eaton Room on the third floor of Cockey’s, complete with much of his memorabilia catalogued and displayed. The second goal is the raising of $25,000 to name a second floor conference room. When that goal is accomplished, the Mike Eaton Committee and the Historical Society will raise a $250,000 endowment that will carry the Eaton name forth in perpetuity for years to come.

Eighty percent of the earnings generated by the scholarship endowment will go directly to qualifying, graduating students who will also be asked to name their most inspirational teacher for a recognition gift. Twenty percent of the scholarship fund will go to support the educational mission of the Historical Society.

Committee Chairperson Evelyn Babylon notes that it will take much dedication and time to develop a scholarship endowment of this magnitude. Criteria for scholarship applications will be completed at a later date and amounts will be determined by the returns on the endowment investments.
