Update - Home damaged in early morning Westminster fire, no one injured

November 25, 2015 S. Wayne Carter Jr. Carroll County Times

More than 50 firefighters from 10 companies in four counties were needed to get an early Wednesday morning fire under control in Westminster.

No injuries were reported, and it's unclear if anyone was home at the time of the blaze, according to an emailed report from Westminster Vol. Fire Company spokesman Kevin Dayhoff…

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which appears to have originated in the carport of the one-story, single family home in the 500 block of Old Baltimore Road off Malcolm Drive, according to Dayhoff. The fire quickly spread to the adjacent house and a nearby vehicle and equipment trailer.

Firefighters received the call around 1:33 a.m., were on the scene by 1:37 a.m. and had the fire under control within an hour, according to Dayhoff.

About 50 firefighters from Westminster, Reese, Pleasant Valley, Gamber, Hampstead and Sykesville companies were dispatched in addition to firefighters from Reisterstown and Glyndon in Baltimore County, a unit from York County and an air support unit from Howard County, according to Dayhoff.

Please be fire-safe out there for the holidays. As we were wrapping-up operations from the Old Baltimore Road fire, many of us exchanged our goodbyes and “Happy Holidays,” and in the dry dark humor of firefighters, many folks remarked how much it is a drag to see each other in the middle of the night.

After-all, face it, when we see each other in the middle of the night it is often as a result of a fire, traffic accident, illness or family tragedy. One firefighter told the truth, “Oh this is the season when we will see a lot of each other.” Sadly it is true. Although more research is needed, it always seems that fires and accidents increase in number during the holiday season. Be safe out there.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Update: 3:25 p.m., Nov. 25, 2015

No injuries were reported. There were “two individuals at home when the fire started,” according to DSFM Bruce D. Bouch, director of public education and media affairs with the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

According to a recent release by the fire marshal’s office, the cause of the fire was “Accidental due to ashes being placed in a plastic bag and put next to the shed.”

“During the winter months and the holiday season, it is especially important to dispose of all fireplace, cooking grill and wood stove ashes safely in a fireproof container away from the house and certainly away from anything combustible. Pour some water on the ashes – be fire safe to protect your property and your family,” said Dayhoff

“It is important to note that the folks who were home at the time of this fire got out safely because they had a working smoke alarm and the alarm alerted them that there was a fire... Take this opportunity to check your smoke alarm before friends and family visit for the holidays,” said Dayhoff

Firefighters and first responders see a little too much of each other during the holiday season. The fire marshal’s office and the Westminster fire department take this opportunity to remind you to not have first responders over to your house this holiday season as uninvited guests.

“Although we are very friendly, this time of the year, we are way too serious to attend your holiday get-together in the event of a fire. Ensure your guests are aware of all available exits if a fire would occur… The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. And if you are going to be careless, have extra food available in case 50 firefighters need to stop by in the middle of the night to come tromping through your house. Happy holidays from your local Carroll County fire department of the fire marshal’s office.

By Kevin E. Dayhoff, 5:12 p.m. EST, December 4, 2013

On the Mason-Dixon Line in northern Carroll County, the historic town of Lineboro was awakened at 4:11 a.m. on Tuesday when the first alarm rang out that there was a fire in the 160-year-old Lazarus United Church of Christ and Lutheran Union Church. Two alarms and two hours later, the fire was declared under control.

In spite of the efforts of approximately 60 firefighters from Carroll and Baltimore counties and York County, Pa., the historic structure was a total loss.

According to research by historians Joe Getty and Mary Ann Ashcraft for the Historical Society of Carroll County, "Carroll County was strongly influenced by German Baptists, also known as Dunkards and later as Church of the Brethren, and by two denominations which worked closely together during those early years — Lutheran and Reformed (now known as United Church of Christ.)

[…]

Carroll has a history of natural disasters — snowstorms, floods, tornadoes, fires — that threaten our safety, health and welfare. Too often, these natural disasters find a church.

On June 19, 1952, a storm destroyed the St. John's Roman Catholic Church steeple on Main Street in Westminster.

On Feb. 19, 1893, a tornado destroyed the steeple at St. Paul's United Church of Christ at the corner of Green Street and Bond.

On April 9 and 10, 1883, an entire section of Westminster, from John Street to Carroll Street to Main Street, burned to the ground. All that was left of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church at 21 Carroll Street was a brick shell.

[…]

An article in the Baltimore Sun last Tuesday by Blair Ames and Carrie Wells reported, “The congregation itself dates to 1853, and was founded by members of Zion's Church in Manchester… poor roads had made the five-mile route from Lineboro to Manchester impassable for several months each year, so the faithful decided to build their own church.

“According to a 1939 Sun article, the original sanctuary was built through donation pledges from members — the largest recorded was $120 and the smallest ‘121/2 cents.’”

Eagle Archive: In 1923, sheriff busted the Hampstead fireman's carnival for gambling

On Wednesday, Aug. 1, 1923, the Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company carnival was accused of running a gambling operation and was shut down by Carroll County Sheriff William Phillips.

Phillips appeared on the carnival grounds with Carroll County State's Attorney Theodore F. Brown, and arrested the person in charge of the carnival's amusements, Thomas Zepp, and hauled him off to jail.

Pandemonium broke loose in Hampstead as a result. This was especially true because of the significance the Hampstead fireman's carnival has played in the history of the town…

Public safety personnel gather at Westminster Fire Hall for mark National EMS Week

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

This week, May 20 – May 26, is National EMS Week when emergency medical crews in Carroll County and throughout the country are honored for their work.

To mark the occasion, emergency medical services providers, firefighters, and administrative personnel at the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 gathered for a luncheon Tuesday in the day room of firehouse.

A proclamation by Westminster Mayor Kevin Utz was presented that noted that emergency medical services are a vital public service and that members of the EMS teams “are ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week…”

EMS personnel are often on the front line and are among the first to arrive upon the scene of an accident, medical emergency or natural disaster.

Whether it is an injury as the result of a crime, home or workplace accident, a fire, automobile accident, heart attack, or a natural disaster, EMS personnel arrive in minutes to attend to the sick or injured on site and see to it that the patients are safely transported to the hospital.

EMS Week dates back to when President Gerald Ford first declared November 3 – 10, 1974 National Emergency Medical Services Week. Over the years, the week to recognize the work of EMS personnel moved to various dates in the calendar year before it was settled in 1992 to be the 3rd week in May.

This year’s theme for National EMS Week is “EMS: More Than A Job. A Calling.” To listen to the public safety personnel at the luncheon, it is obvious that putting aside their own personal safety to save the lives of others is a calling – especially for the many EMS providers who volunteer their services for the Westminster fire department or any of the fourteen volunteer departments in Carroll County.

Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company - April 2, 1971: Now's The Time To Rid Property Of Fire Hazards

Now's The Time To Rid Property Of Fire Hazards - Spring into action against fire hazards now that Spring Clean-Up time is here, is the advice of the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company.

Trash and rubbish are breeding places for fires. The following is a four-point program for spring clean-up action:

1. Clean out stacks of newspapers and magazines; discard old clothing, mattresses, furniture, lamp shades, draperies, etc., that clutter up the attic, basement and closets.

2. Do the same clean up job in your home workshop. Get rid of shavings, oily rags, old paint, etc.

3. Get after the trash in the garage and remove the dead grass and brush around and near the house.

4. Have your furnace, chimneys, and stoves inspected and cleaned now. Don't wait until fall when you may get caught by the first cold snap. A little "elbow grease" now may save a lot of grief later. And if you have to burn trash, etc., watch it closely so it will not get out of control.
