How black delegates put the kibosh on same-sex marriage in Maryland by Hassan Giordano

After close to 2½ months of pushing for a measure that seemingly divided most legislators based solely on religious principle and beliefs, it took only 2½ hours of debate, in the Maryland House of Delegates, to see that proponents of the bill did not have the 71-votes needed for passage. SB116, the Civil Rights Protection Act, which breezed through the Senate with little debate and even less opposition from African American senators, met a far different fate in the chambers right across the hall.

Being led by the vocal leadership of Baltimore County Delegate Emmett Burns (D-10) - as Republican Delegate Don Dwyer, the self-proclaimed face of the opposition, sat back relishing in the moment - black lawmakers showed their strength in the legislature, joined by a united GOP front. The bill, which saw earlier oppositional push-back from co-sponsors Jill P. Carter of Baltimore City and Tiffany Alston of PG County, had many in the House debating the merits of the legislation, while questioning the support of gay marriage amongst their African American constituency.

Standing up on the floor to deliver an impassioned, and lengthy, speech denouncing those who attribute same sex marriage as that of the new age civil rights struggle.

Today, Velvet Rope nightclub got hit with some very disturbing news, they must pay a hefty fine of $3,500. Yet two hours later, supporters of the establishment protested outside the Downtown Partnership in search of fairness, justice and business equality!

Having to appear earlier in the afternoon before the (3)-member Baltimore City Liquor Board, in regards to multiple violations stemming from previous incidents at the establishment; Tracye Stafford, represented by attorney Paul Gardner, received a tremendously severe fine by the Board while escaping a suspension of their liquor license. The isolated and separate incidents garnered mass media attention which revealed an apparent targeting of this establishment by the Baltimore City Police Department, Downtown Partnership and near-by neighboring hotels.

O'Malley Blocks Conservative Media From State House

The Maryland Senate Republican Caucus has called to our attention that the O'Malley administration is thwarting access of the conservative media to the Maryland State House:

"Governor O'Malley took office three years ago pledging to the citizens ofMaryland that he would run the most transparent administration in Maryland'shistory.

"However, as O'Malley's poll numbers have dropped over the past year, theGovernor's press office has excluded media and citizens from pressconferences in the Governor's Reception Room. They have also established newbarriers for obtaining press credentials for the State House press corps.

"Reporter Hassan Giordano of the Baltimore Independent Examiner describes hisfrustration with the Governor's interference of an open and transparentgovernment in Maryland and, specifically, the lack of access to the Governorunless you are one of the few favored media representatives known to write or produce pro-Administration pieces:

"'While certain members of the Press, including myself, have been stalled andconsistently delayed our press credentials, due to some new process theO'Malley administration has put in place, many are questioning why now? As if not already known as the liberal oppressor of all things conservative,Governor O'Malley is now playing games with certain reporter's credentials,who are too closely tied to conservative publications.'"
