“E-mails are the spawn of Satan.”

“Similarly, the more important a position or office a man holds, the more likely he is to do some dumb shit.”

“I think what happens in a public figure's personal life should be just that: personal. Not in the public arena. I don't care what anyone wants to say: … What good purpose, other than the cruel sport of ho-shaming, can the public picking apart of these people serve for the figures, their families?

Who is Holly Petraeus? by Adriana Velez at CaféMom.com

Who Is Holly Petraeus? The Scorned General's Wife Isn't All She Seems

As the Petraeus sex scandal continues to spiral, there's one person I keep wondering about: David's wife of 37 years, Holly Petraeus. How is she taking this scandal? Is she furious, heartbroken -- is she surprised? Did she ever suspect her husband was fooling around?

You've seen the photos of Holly: A grandmotherly woman with a gray bob and swept bangs, almost always smiling, glasses perched on her nose. She reminds me of oatmeal cookies -- sweet, wholesome, and a little old-fashioned. But dainty? Forget it. Behind that kind smile is a woman made of iron. She's an Army wife. Not just an Army wife, but a four-star General's wife who's managed to forge her own path and identity.

Holly is what they call military royalty. Her father is retired four-star General William Knowlton, formerly the superintendent of the United States Military Academy when Petraeus was a cadet there. He also served as a NATO commander. Holly's ancestors fought in the Civil War, Spanish American War, and the Indian Wars.

Gawker: It Is Not Safe to Break Up in a Burger King Any More

It Is Not Safe to Break Up in a Burger King Any More

BY ADRIAN CHEN
November 8, 2011
Web developer Andy Boyle was hanging out in a Burger King when he overheard a married couple having an argument that "Aaron Sorkin couldn't write… any better." So he live-tweeted the whole thing, with extensive multimedia.
Check it out. It is an impressive piece of eavesdropping! And also a terrifying example of crowd-sourced surveillance. From now on, it's best to activate a portable cell phone scrambler to stymie any nearby Twitter users whenever you're going to have embarrassing personal conversations in public... http://gawker.com/5857507/it-is-not-safe-to-break-up-in-a-burger-king-any-more

Couple's wedding vows put to immediate test By Helena Oliviero

Trisha and Jim’s wedding day. They vowed to love each other, no matter the obstacles. But the obstacles would come sooner and be bigger than they could imagine.

Couple's wedding vows put to immediate test

GWINNETT COUNTY NEWS Saturday, August 14, 2010

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Every photograph tells a story. Some, like these, tell two.

They are pictures of Jim and Trisha Duguay’s wedding day. A day 18 months in the planning, every detail seems perfect: Orange Gerber daisies float in glass bowls, a three-tiered cupcake wedding cake waits in a reception hall, bright pink rose petals dot the Dahlonega winery grounds. A ray of sunshine bursts through threatening mid-May skies just as the early evening ceremony begins.

Trisha, 27, a blond and vivacious administrative assistant, beams in her lace wedding dress with a fuchsia sash, her toenails painted to match. Jim, 38, a soft-spoken engineer, cradles her face as he kisses her.

But look closer, and you’ll see another story unfolding.

Trisha leans heavily on her father’s arm as she walks slowly down the aisle. She and Jim have to sit during the marriage ceremony, which has been shortened to just a few minutes.

Behind her smile, Trisha’s pale blue eyes droop. Jim’s betray a look of fright. As they stand to kiss each other, Trisha holds tight to the leg of Jim’s pants, as if she’d fall if he weren’t there.

This was not the joyous moment the Norcross couple had imagined. Trisha wanted nothing more than to marry Jim. She’d known it since she first spotted him across their office parking lot more than five years before. Jim had dated seriously, but waited his whole life to find “the one” — Trisha.

Now, that day was here. More than a hundred guests were gathered. Their favorite restaurant was catering. Their favorite band was booked to play.

But that morning, Trisha had awakened in her sister’s house in Dawsonville feeling sick and dizzy, her head pounding, her ears ringing and echoing. She’d had migraines on and off for years, but nothing like this. This pain was far more intense, and with it came nausea and difficulty balancing.

She closed the blinds and hid beneath the covers, hoping it was just stress getting the better of her. She slipped on one of Jim’s shirts, seeking comfort in the scent of his cologne. Why didn’t we just elope? she thought.

Late in the afternoon, after a reassuring call from Jim and with help from her father and her bridesmaids, Trisha managed to get out of bed and into her wedding gown.

Now she and Jim were before the minister, finally taking the vows they’d long hoped to: I will trust you and respect you, laugh with you and cry with you, loving you faithfully through good times and bad, regardless of the obstacles we may face together.

Almost immediately, that commitment would be put to the test.

An unlikely, perfect match

They were supposed to be on their way to their honeymoon, a seven-day Caribbean cruise. Instead, just as their reception got under way, Jim and Trisha were rushing to the hospital.

Jim was frightened. Something was terribly wrong with his new bride. He’d known it as soon as she walked down the aisle. Trisha, still in her wedding gown, was lifted into a family member’s car, and they set out for Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, 30 minutes away…

Reporter Accuses Dowd of - What Else?- Blind Date Profiling

helena-large.jpg Former Politico scribe Helena Andrews is calling the date that NYT columnist Maureen Dowd set her up on with Obama aide Reggie Love "racial profiling." Andrews writes about it in the latest issue of Marie Claire.

How dare Dowd assume she wants to date a black man?

A Web site called The Nytpicker has the scoop.

An excerpt
"I've got a guy for you," Dowd told Andrews. "He's so hot, it's perfect." Read the rest here: http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlDC/online_media/reporter_accuses_dowd_of_what_else_blind_date_profiling__161520.asp

The Nytpicker says:

Thursday, May 13, 2010

In the spring of 2008, NYT columnist Maureen Dowd fixed up Helena Andrews, a black former NYT assistant, on a blind date with Obama aide Reggie Love.

Two years later, the woman is now accusing Dowd of "racial profiling" in arranging the unsuccessful date -- to which Love showed up an hour late and in his gym clothes. Read the rest here: http://www.nytpick.com/2010/05/black-reporter-accuses-maureen-dowd-of.html

Meanwhile Ms. Andrews writes in "Marie Clair":

http://www.marieclaire.com/celebrity-lifestyle/articles/living/dating-racial-profiling

Dating Dilemma: Racial Profiling

One African-American woman pleads not to be set up on a blind date with the only black professional you know.

"I've got a guy for you. He's so hot, it's perfect." It was the spring of '08 when Maureen Dowd, the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist, decided to take it upon herself to find me a man — specifically, Reggie Love, Barack Obama's "body guy" (read: personal aide). Standing outside the auditorium in Philadelphia where Obama the candidate had just given his loaded race speech, I thought to myself, How could a woman I'd helped with a computer problem once as an assistant at the Times spot the man for me? "Don't be silly," she said, when I demurred. "My assistant will set it up."

I was 27 and working as the only black reporter at Politico.com when a black man was running for president. The issue of race in America had hit a fever pitch, and suddenly everyone seemed determined to cast me as Michelle redux — and all that was missing was my very own Barack. [...]

... I'm not saying that my colleagues and neighbors should have set me up with white friends, necessarily. I was just disappointed that, despite all my more awesome qualities, the main thing they all saw was my skin.

Recently, my mother met a black man at Ikea, gave him my card, and then yelled at me when I raised the obvious psycho-killer issues. She said he was nice, a lawyer. Like Maureen, Mom was playing into the kind of stereotypes I was trying to dodge. But I realized that both women just wanted to see me happy. And, even though I was grateful Ikea guy never called, I know that the more weird setups I endure, the better my chances of getting to Mr. Right, whatever his race.

Helena Andrews's memoir, Bitch Is the New Black (HarperCollins), is out this month. She writes a weekly column for Slate's TheRoot.com.

Besides - I always hated being set-up by friends for blind dates during the many years I was single... I liked being single at the time...

To My Darling Husband, I had a small accident with your pickup

--To My Darling Husband,

Before you return from your business trip, I just want you to know about the small accident I had with the pickup truck when I turned into the driveway. Fortunately not too bad and I really didn't get hurt, so please don't worry too much about me.

I was coming home from Wal-Mart, and when I turned into the driveway I accidentally pushed down on the accelerator instead of the brake. The garage door is slightly bent but the pickup fortunately came to a halt when it bumped into your car.

I am really sorry, but I know with your kind-hearted personality you will forgive me. You know how much I love you and care for you my sweetheart.

I am enclosing a picture for you. I cannot wait to hold you in my arms again.

Your loving wife.
XOXOXOXOXO

P.S. Your Girlfriend Called.

25 Divorces Granted In Carroll County In 1924

Democratic Advocate, January 11, 1924: 25 Divorces Granted In Carroll County In 1924 http://tinyurl.com/yabwqj3

25 Divorces Granted In Carroll County In 1923—During the year 1923 the clerk of the Circuit Court for Carroll County issued 389 marriage licenses, and during the same period there were 25 divorces passed and granted; a small fraction over six per cent of the marriage licenses issued turned out in divorce; not so bad for Carroll county, comparing it with Baltimore city, where the percentage of divorces is about 25 per cent of all marriages granted are divorced.

The study does not mention the chances of breaking-up with an artist or a writer. Of course, I am sure that is probably because we are such stable folks.

According to the article: “Those who work in the caring professions or who have jobs that are extrovert and stressful are more likely to split from their partner.

“Dancers, choreographers, massage therapists and bartenders have around a 40 per cent chance of experiencing a relationship breakdown. But also at high risk are nurses, psychiatrists and those who help the elderly and disabled.

“However, optometrists, dentists, clergymen and podiatrists are all in occupations which carry a 2 to 7 per cent chance of family breakdown.

“Agricultural engineers were the most faithful of all, with their relationships suffering a breakdown rate of less than 2 per cent.

“The trend has been highlighted in a paper that correlates occupations with divorce and separation rates, to be published in the Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology.”

What Women Really Want For Christmas

Culture Buzz A garden centre in the UK is apologizing for publishing this advertisement….

OMG – Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

Hey, I think that if I got that for my wife for Christmas, even my kind, friendly and always understanding wife would promptly place the clothesline where the sun does not shine.

Although, once, I did ask her if I could get her a chainsaw for Christmas. I did not ask twice.
