The only actor nominated for an Oscar in Spike Lee's film "BlacKkKlansman," is white.

The only actor nominated for an Oscar in Spike Lee's film "BlacKkKlansman," is white.

Feb. 24, 2019

In recent years, watching the Oscars has become tedious. For that matter, when I did media criticism years ago for another publication, I wrote about the Oscars becoming irrelevant mindless drivel. So many pathologically narcissistic Hollywood-types examining their navel with a cracked mirror.

In the latest Oscar death rattle: according to an article I found on Yahoo, “Aubrey Plaza rips on Oscars and Netflix in hilarious Spirit Awards monologue:”  https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/aubrey-plaza-rips-oscars-netflix-005201592.html which first appeared in USA TODAY, “The host of the Spirit Awards, Aubrey Plaza, used part of her opening monologue to make fun of the Oscars…

“Another part of Plaza's monologue that got plenty of laughs was about Spike Lee's film "BlacKkKlansman," because its only actor nominated is a Caucasian star.

" 'BlacKkKlansman' explores the struggle of a black police officer to find his role in the fight against white supremacy. So congratulations to the sole nominee from that film today, Adam Driver. We are so proud of you. You were the best one. I’m sure they’ll do the white thing."

You cannot make this up. I have not watched the Oscars in years. It is no longer relevant. It killed itself with its pathological narcissistic personality defect.

July 7, 1929 “Pleasure Crazed” movie set

July 7, 1929 “Pleasure Crazed” movie set.

Kevin Dayhoff February 5, 2019

This is a picture featuring an elegant art nouveau – art deco entranceway from the set from an obscure black and white American movie, “Pleasure Crazed,” which was released by Fox Film Corporation on July 7, 1929.

The movie was based upon “The Scent of Sweet Almonds” by Monckton Hoffe and features themes involving a poor writer, con-artists, intrigue, deception, infidelity, and suicide.

The 60-minute film was directed by Donald Gallaher and Charles Klein and written by Douglas Z. Doty and Clare Kummer. The cinematographers were Glen MacWilliams and Ernest Palmer. It was edited by J. Edwin Robbins.

The melodramatic movie featured the work of Marguerite Churchill, Kenneth MacKenna, Dorothy Burgess, Campbell Gullan, Douglas Gilmore, and Henry Kolker.

The movie was made when the Great Depression was just beginning and film design and technology were in its infancy. It was a time when art deco was transitioning into ‘modernism,’ and many highly stylized movies and literary works featured the excesses of the life of the rich and famous. In retrospect, many historians view the era as an attempt to distract much of the population from the rigors and depravations of the Great Depression.

It is hard to find information about the movie. According to the American Film Institute, an April 21, 1920 New York Times news item, “Fox bought the rights to Monckton Hoffe's story, which was written as a play but never produced. The same article included Earle Foxe in the cast, but his appearance in the released film has not been confirmed…

“Alma Dean and her husband, Anthony, rent a house from a trio of crooks who have the intention of stealing the wife's jewels. The female member of the group remains in the guise of a housekeeper, and gradually she and Anthony become very fond of each other.

“In the meantime, Alma is playing around with a poor writer, and Anthony, miserable, leaves her, accidentally carrying away a flask containing poison.

“Previously, the writer dared Alma to commit suicide, but when she sees her husband take this very flask, she says nothing. The "housekeeper," learning of the state of affairs, chases after Anthony and wrecks her car at the garage where he is buying gasoline. The situation is satisfactorily resolved…”

1895: First commercial movie screened

On this day in 1895, the world's first commercial movie screening takes place at the Grand Cafe in Paris. The film was made by Louis and Auguste Lumiere, two French brothers who developed a camera-projector called the Cinematographe. The Lumiere brothers unveiled their invention to the public in March 1895 with a brief film showing workers leaving the Lumiere factory. On December 28, the entrepreneurial siblings screened a series of short scenes from everyday French life and charged admission for the first time... read more

Charles Theatre: "5 Easy Pieces" Final Show Tonight!

OMG - One of my all-time favorite movies...

FINAL SCREENING TONIGHT.

FIVE EASY PIECES

Restored Print

Showtime:
Monday, July 26 - 7 PM.
No Thursday Show!

1970 Bob Rafelson. Jack Nicholson, Karen Black. 98 m. Technicolor.

"In one of his finest performances in a run that established him as one of the great film stars of his generation, Nicholson plays Bobby Dupea, an angry young man working in the oilfields of Southern California.

Bobby lives a white trash life with his sweet but dim girlfriend Rayette (Black), and goes boozing with his buddies. But he is escaping from his upper-class, musically talented family and he is forced into a painful reunion with them when his father suffers a near-fatal stroke.

Blending the road movie with social critique, the film offers a brutally enlightening picture of America during the Vietnam era. Bobby is the embodiment of the time and the country - part drifter, part redneck, part patrician.

The split between Bobby's upbringing and his adult life is expressed in the film's soundtrack, which is divided roughly half and half between classical piano pieces and the country songs of Tammy Wynette, beloved of Rayette.

It is an urgent, funny, bleak film with Nicholson electric in the lead, relishing the surreal scene in which he plays a piano on the back of a truck in the midst of a traffic jam, and the famous chicken salad sandwich set-piece in the roadside diner". (Channel 4)

Jean Renoir: The Woman on the Beach

Jean Renoir: The Woman on the Beach

“Go ahead and say it, I’m no good.”

Quintessential film noir.

“The Woman on the Beach” (“La Femme sur la plage”) released June 2 1947 directed by Jean Renoir and starring Robert Ryan, Charles Bickford, Nan Leslie, Joan Bennett, and Irene Ryan.

“…Recuperating coast guard Lieutenant Scott Burnett (Robert Ryan) has his head turned from wholesome fiancé Eve (Nan Leslie) for a non-consummated affair-of-the-heart with comely Peggy Butler (Joan Bennett) wife of a famous painter who is now blind (Charles Bickford).

“Peggy is held psychological prisoner in the marriage over guilt that she may have caused his blindness so the Lieutenant tries to prove he is faking. The mood is quintessential noir and although the plot is sparse the mysterious atmosphere, performances and overly-powerful score carry the film…”

The Blob

The Blob

Steve McQueen’s debut performance in the movies. “The film's tongue-in-cheek theme song, "Beware of the Blob" (recorded by studio group the Five Blobs—actually singer Bernie Nee overdubbing himself), was written by Burt Bacharach and Mack David and was a nationwide hit in the U.S."

Released September 12, 1958 by Paramount Pictures. Written by Irving H. Millgate. Screenplay by Kay Linaker and Theodore Simonson.

Starring Steve McQueen, Aneta Corsaut, Earl Rowe, and Olin Howard.

“Teenager Steve Andrews (Steve McQueen) and his girl Jane Martin (Aneta Corsaut) are out parking and see a falling star. They drive out to try to find where the meteor landed. An old man (Olin Howland) has heard the meteor crash near his house. He finds the meteor and pokes it with a stick. The rock breaks open to reveal small jelly-like blob inside. This blob, a living creature, crawls up the stick and attaches itself to his hand. The man runs hysterically onto the road, where he is seen by Steve, who takes him to see the local doctor, Doctor Hallen.”

Bardelys The Magnificent 1926 The Boat Ride

Bardelys The Magnificent 1926 The Boat Ride

Theaterpalace wrote: This is an exclusive Valentine Special. John Gilbert and Eleanor Boardman from King Vidor's long lost Silent Classic. Now Beautifully restored by David Shepard's group Film Preservation Associates, and Lobster of Paris. That is except for the missing Third reel.

Jack Gilbert was at the height of his fame and popularity. Reigning as MGM's biggest Star. Boardman the new "Mrs. King Vidor" was never more lovely as the "Lady Roxalanne"

Since this movie is coming out on DVD in the next few months from Flicker Alley, (not with this music by Antonio Coppolla), I won't be posting anything else from the picture anytime soon on these boards.

Hope everyone will buy the DVD! This two disc set is also expected to include another Lost and Found Gilbert feature MONTE CRISTO (1922) with Estelle Taylor!

______

There are many great lines in the movie. The one that really made me smile was : “Roxalanne, my beloved – unworthy wretch that I am – I have no right to your love- - ” “Je suis tellement indigne d’un amour comme le votre!” John Gilbert and Eleanor Boardman from King Vidor's long lost 1926 silent classic, “The Boat Ride.”

Of course, this movie is not to be confused with “I’m on a boat” Hmmmm – please heed the strong language warning – NSFW! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7yfISlGLNU

Charles Theatre to show Kubrick’s “Lolita”

Charles Theatre to show Kubrick’s “Lolita”

Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 LOLITA plays three times this week in the revival time slots:

Saturday July 4 11:30 AM (please note the earlier-than-normal showtime); Monday, July 6 7 PM; Thursday, July 9 9PM.

Wild, marvellously enjoyable comedy, adapted from Nabokov's novel. James Mason is the lover of little girls, the smiling, obsequious, phony Humbert Humbert; Shelley Winters is Charlotte Haze, the culture vulture rampant; Sue Lyon is her sexy daughter, Lolita; and Peter Sellers (at his most inspired) is Quilty, Humbert Humbert's walking paranoia....

LOLITA is black slapstick and at times it’s so far out that you gasp as you laugh. An inspired Peter Sellers creates a new comic pattern--a crazy quilt of psychological, sociological commentary so “hip” it’s surrealist. (Pauline Kael)
