The annual Westminster Road Runners Club “Main Street Mile, a Carroll County rite of spring, will be held Wednesday evening, April 16, 2008 in Westminster.

The annual event dates back to 1981 and is known as “one of the fastest one-mile courses in the world” because it begins at the top of East Main Street at Fair Avenue and follows Main Street west to the Westminster Branch of the Carroll County Public Library - all downhill, with a total vertical drop of 144 feet.

Main Street will be closed to traffic for the event which attracts 700 runners and hundreds of cheering spectators and family members who come out in support.

The event always begins at 7 PM sharp, rain or shine and the race is run in two “heats.” Heat #1 is officially timed and scored with prizes awarded. To qualify for Heat #1, you must be age 11 or older and be capable of running a mile in less than 10 minutes.

Heat #2 is the “Connor Smith Memorial Fun Run.” It will neither be officially timed nor scored. A clock showing an unofficial race time, however, will be at the finish line.

Because so many young people participate, the Main Street Mile is known as a fun family event. Even the “race numbers” are fun, since everyone under the age of 10 wears a race identification badge, which bears the number “1.”

The cheers for the “number 1’s” always seem the heartiest, since finishing is quite an accomplishment for the little runners. Every “number 1” is awarded a medal at the finish line.

Every year over fifty volunteers, in addition to the Westminster Police Department and the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department and the Fire Police come together with members of the Westminster Road Runners Club and the Main Street Mile race director, to make sure it is a success.

Race directors in the past have included Liuda Galinaitis and one of the founders of the event, the late Dave Herlocker.

According to this year’s race director, Beth Weisenborn, registration for the 2008 Main Street Mile is now closed. The 700-runner limit has been met.

Wagoner, Stick Capture Westminster Main Street Mile

Matthew Wagoner from neighboring Frederick County and Westminster Road Runner member Sherry Stick captured the men's and women's division of the 26th annual Main Street Mile, held on April 18 and sponsored by the Westminster Road Runners.

Because of the large crowds which have participated in recent years in the downhill run from the east ridge of Westminster to the library at the center of town, registration was halted at 700 this year, with approximately 275 being in the first, competitive heat and the remainder in the second heat, treated as an untimed fun run.

Wagoner, a teacher at Linganore High School just over the Frederick-Carroll county line, led the first wave of runners down the initial hill, and by the time he reached the half-mile point in 2:02, the only question was how large his winning margin would be.

Wagoner's winning time of 4:09 is the fastest time of the century, even though it is almost fifteen seconds slower than the course record, set by Todd Ashley in 1988. Trailing Wagoner by thirteen seconds was newly minted masters runner Doug Mock, who in younger days won this race in under four minutes. Considering that he recently suffered numerous injuries in a fall from a fast moving bicycle, his effort is to be commended.

Danny Fink nipped Remus Medley for third, and Nicholas Wilbur, a member of the McDaniel College track team, finished fifth. Finishing tenth was Shawn Pinamonti, winner of the race in 2001 and 2002.

Repeating her 2006 winning effort was Sherry Stick, who spent her college years at Salisbury University on Maryland's Eastern Shore running 800 and 1500 meter runs. Finishing fourteenth overall, Stick's time of 4:50 was one second faster than last year's winning time and also one second faster than her second place time in 2001.

Brittney Rooks, whose 4:57 time is only the second sub-five minute time recorded by a thirteen or under female, finished second, ahead of Becky Alwarez-Rhodes, who finished second last year. Another thirteen year old, Anna Rachel Demaree, finished fourth, one place better than last year, and Ashley Baker, a McDaniel College senior whose tennis season was sidelined by student teaching duties, finished fifth.

While race officials were sorting through finishing times, and finishers from the first heat were attacking ice cream, word was received from the course that a fun runner had collapsed just past the half-way point and was being treated by medics administering CPR.

To the distress of everyone, the runner--six year old Connor Smith, running with his mother and participating in his fourth Main Street Mile--could not be revived.

Doctors at nearby Carroll General Hospital later stated that he suffered from a rare and previously undiagnosed heart condition known as anomalous left coronary.

Ten days later, on a beautiful Saturday morning, a memorial service was held in Odenton, Maryland, at Connor's home church. In a church filled with family and friends and adorned with flowers, toys, and pictures, Connor was lauded as an intelligent and active child, who treasured the medals he received in the Main Street Mile and who had trained prior to the race. His parents have allowed the Westminster Road Runners to post a picture on Connor, wearing his 2006 Main Street Mile shirt, on the club's web site (www.carr.org/~wrrc).

Contributions may be made to the Connor Smith Memorial Fund at the Dayton Oaks Elementary School, 4691 Ten Oaks Road, Dayton, MD, 21036. Monies received will be used to purchase books for the library on subjects that Connor loved.

A soggy Mile on Main Street

When Shawn Pinamonti registered for the Main Street Mile, he knew he would be able to run a fast mile.

He just didn't know how fast.

Pinamonti was the first of 476 runners to cross the finish line of the Westminster Road Runners Club-sponsored race. He clocked a time of 4 minutes, 11.8 seconds Wednesday for the win.

Tristan Gilbert, a 2000 graduate of Westminster High, was second in 4:14.9. He was followed by 22-year-old Brendan Henderson. Howard Courtland, 46, took the masters title with a time of 4:46.

"I didn't really know what to expect," said Pinamonti, of Towson. "I knew I'd be up near the front. I was hoping to be first but I didn't know what anyone else would run."

Pinamonti wasn't too familiar with the layout of the race, but he wasn't too uncomfortable, either.

"I just moved to Maryland about a year ago," he said. "I heard about this race being a quick mile. But I'm a mile runner. This is my type of race."

Eldersburg's Rachel Hawes became the youngest two-time winner in race history. She was the first female finisher with a time of 4:50.3, edging runner-up Sherry Esposito by .7 seconds. North Carroll High distance standout Colleen Lawson came in third at 5:06 and Kim Keller won the masters division in 6:13.9.

Hawes has some experience in running. The two-time AAU champion in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs said she just runs for the enjoyment of the sport.

"I like running," said Hawes, 13, who also won last year's race. "I've been running since I was in second grade. It's fun. I like being in shape."

Other noteworthy finishers included Cheryl Williams (5:16), Amy King (5:17) and Tarynn Baker (5:18), who together swept the women's 16-19 age group. All three runners perform for the North Carroll track team. Bill Osburn was the oldest finisher with a 7:35.

Unlike in years past, the weather held off - somewhat.

"We would've had over 500 finishers if it had been sunny, but this isn't the worst year we've ever had," said race director Liuda Galinaitis. "A few years ago a storm hit just as the race started."

To make matters worse, the race wasn't as organized as it is today.

"We had used index cards to put on the runners' shirts. We couldn't read the names of anyone. We had no age groups that year."

But Galinaitis makes no apologies.

"I wasn't race director then," she quipped, "so you can't blame me."
