Not withstanding the above picture, a few of the reasons I am not attending the Preakness today… And a few reasons I’d like to attend. I mean it is on the “A” list of Maryland - Baltimore must-attend cultural events.
Ah hem, well, this is not the staid, curmudgeon Preakness – or publication of H. L. Mencken, now is it. I guess that is a good thing – or a whatever.
Oh snap. Ya know, I'd head on down to the Preakness, but I don't seem to have a hat for the occasion.
The bikini contest pictures start at picture number three… Okay, moving on… This looks a Steffenesque view of the Preakness. Photograph number 6 - - Reason number two I did not go to the Preakness; I don't have the legs I never had.
There are perp-walk pictures sprinkled throughout the spread. Seems some folks in the past have misbehaved in the Preakness infield festivities. I’m shocked I tell you, shocked I say.
Me, I liked the hat pictures. No seriously, I really like the horsey-set fashion and hat pictures… Check out picture 33 might be my favorite – among many favorites.
The pics of the U.S. Navy's parachute team, also known as the "Leap Frogs,” are fun.
And yes folks, the day is a veritable sports lollapalooza. The pictures of the volleyball match in the infield start at number 23, followed quickly by some great pictures of ZZ Top. Picture number 29 is pretty cool.
Oh, how sophisticated… No further comment on picture number 49.
The few pictures starting at number 51 appear to portray someone who is hoping to get a Darwin award… The horses are on the track. Some of the horses’ asses may be found in the infield.
Another "Running of the Urinals" pic at 64.
Seems Westminster folks have figured somewhat prominently in the Preakness infield festivities in the past.
In picture number 67 “Aimee Gable of Westminster downs a vodka, cranberry and peach schnapps concoction supplied by Peter Perrine of Lancaster, Pa., on the infield at Pimlico Race Course. Several friends took turns at the spigot on the morning of the Preakness.” I wonder if Ms. Gable gave her Mom a copy of that picture for Mother’s Day?
Picture number 68…Oh, nevermind.
Picture number 80, ugh, just ugh.
Katie Hutchinson may be found in picture number 86 from May 17, 2008.
Between you and me, the photographs are technically and artistically quite good. A news photographer can only take pictures of what they see… I’ve love to attend the Preakness some day if only to take a bunch of pictures. As for the infield, I’m no longer as young as I never was.
For at least 6 months I’ve been noticing these strange ‘BNE WAS HERE’ stickers around our apartment in Yannawa.
Also around the area I’ve seen spray-painted graffiti with the same wording or ‘King BNE’.
I also noticed exactly the same stickers around Japan in Osaka and Tokyo and it finally piqued my curiosity enough to Google it. It seems that this graffiti began in San Francisco in 2006 and has certainly hit Bangkok and Tokyo and apparently New York too.
Although nothing’s been proven, the most popular belief online is that it’s the work of a prolific graffiti artist called Benet... Read the rest here: http://pavion.net/bne-was-here-stickers/
The BBC is reporting that archivists in New York’s
oldest library have uncovered a surprising borrower with overdue books.
It has been recently revealed that on October 5, 1789, our
nation’s first president, George Washington, borrowed two books from what was
then the only library in Manhattan,
the New York Society Library.
According to the BBC, on October 5, 1789, a time when New York City was serving as our nation’s capital, President
Washington borrowed the “Law of Nations,” a dissertation on international
relations, and volume 12 of a collection of transcripts of debate transcripts
from Britain's
House of Commons.
Now this in itself may not be earth-shattering news. However there is a catch. It appears that the books were due a month
later but they were never returned.
At the moment, the overdue fines for this lapse, by the
president who never told a lie, have grown to $300,000.00 in the ensuing 220
years.
The BBC reports that although the library is willing to
excuse the fine from the first president, it does, however, want the books
back. “Sadly for fans of 18th-Century political literature, they appear to have
vanished,” laments the BBC.
Locally, in Carroll County, the first library did not open
until 1863, so that rules-out the opportunity for President Washington to have
any overdue library fines in Carroll County.
Furthermore, the Carroll County Public Library is not aware
of any president who has any overdue library books, according to Gregor Becker,
an information specialist with the local library.
Our
nation's first president may not have told a lie, but he was not without his
faults Posted 5/10/10 by Carroll Eagle – Updated Dec. 14, 2016 - the link

on Facebook that she owes the library late-fees. Too funny.
Right now, it seems like there are so many big news stories going on in the world it’s inevitable one of them would be getting the short shrift. It’s terrible though that the unenviable situation has seemingly befallen the story of the deadly flood that hit Nashville last week. With much of the media’s attention focusing on the BP oil spill, someone has to speak for the victims of the devastation in Tennessee, which is what Fox & Friends did this morning. Unfortunately, Steve Doocy decided the best way to raise the flood’s awareness would be to basically brag about how much cooler its victims are than those of other disasters.
Courthouses closed for several hours. No bomb found.
May 13, 2010
By Kevin Dayhoff
At approximately 12:45 p.m on Wednesday, Maryland State Police, Westminster City Police, and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department responded to both courthouses located on North Court Street in Westminster upon the report of a bomb threat, according to a State Police news release.
Annapolis, MD Eric Wargotz, an elected member of the Queens Anne’s County Board of Commissioners and a candidate for US Senate from Maryland released the second of the campaign’s, “Eric on the Issues” radio ads, which began airing today on talk radio stations around the state. Wargotz, a physician, is seeking the Republican nomination for the seat currently held by four term incumbent Senator, Barbara Mikulski.
In the spot (click here or visit our web site ) titled, “Promises Made,” Wargotz talks about his 2006 campaign for Commissioner and his commitment to reduce taxes, improve government efficiencies, and increase transparency.
"During my brief time in office, I led the successful fight to reduce the property tax rate, eliminate unnecessary positions, and make government more accessible and more accountable to our constituents," Wargotz said.
In the ad, Wargotz distinguishes himself from his primary opponents, all who lack a proven record. "Campaigns are about talk, governing is about actions. As my track record proves, the promises I made, were promises I kept," he said.
The Commissioner also took on the incumbent's record of deficit spending saying, "Big taxing and even bigger spending liberal policies in Washington are bankrupting our children’s future."
The spot is an addition to series designed to highlight the cornerstones of the campaign and highlight his legislative and executive experience. In the coming weeks, health care, the economy and the environment will also be addressed.
A discussion this past week about deferring the transition of nine resident Maryland State Police troopers to Sheriff's Office deputies turned into a political debate between Commissioners Julia Gouge and Michael Zimmer.
"You're strongly in favor of the sheriff, but don't mess it up by putting in this other crap," Gouge said to Zimmer during a heated back-and-forth at the commissioners' May 11 meeting.
In total, the county currently contracts 45 resident troopers to help patrol the county, in addition to Sheriff's Office deputies.
A Zimmer-initiated proposal would have moved to transfer nine resident trooper positions into the Sheriff's Office to save $400,000 in fiscal 2012.
But Gouge and Commissioner Dean Minnich gave county staff direction to keep the nine resident troopers in this year's proposed county budget, based on an offer by state police to reduce its contract cost to the county -- an offer that would save $400,000 in the county's proposed fiscal 2011 budget.
Zimmer fought the move, wanting instead to begin this year the phase-out of the troopers and a gradual hiring of additional Sheriff's Office deputies to take their place.
Two work sessions on the issue, on May 11 and May 13, included heated exchanges between Gouge and Zimmer.

Media Execs Embrace The iPad (THR) Hollywood is embracing the iPad. To what degree is tricky to determine because Apple allows media conglomerates to discuss only what's already available for the iPad, not what's upcoming. An exception to that rule came Tuesday in Los Angeles during the Cable Show, when Comcast CEO Brian Roberts discussed prototype technology that syncs the iPad to a set-top box, turning it into a sophisticated remote control for the TV.

The Amazing Race - One husband-and-wife team competed in a 150-mile race across New Zealand, but that wasn't their real adventure.
By Mary Ashley
The night before the race, my husband, Brad, and I are so nervous we can barely talk. Tomorrow, I have to run 21 miles over New Zealand's Southern Alps with two ways out: on foot or by helicopter. Terrified, I go into the bathroom and stifle sobs. What if I get lost, break an ankle, or don't finish after coming this far? We're a relay team, and Brad has to kayak 42 miles. He hasn't kayaked in weeks. What if he drowns? We have two boys. What were we thinking?
The race was Brad's idea, a romantic adventure he'd been pondering for years. He'd often had these plans, but this time he was persistent. The Speight's Coast to Coast, a multisport, two-day adventure race, crosses New Zealand's South Island on a 150-mile course. I'd do the mountain run and he'd kayak, with additional running and cycling for us both. Brad knew that New Zealand was a life-list destination for me, and he said it could be the honeymoon we never had, a fact I ribbed him about endlessly. Just like a honeymoon ... except for the 21-mile mountain run.
Returning home - Frederick High School community remembers Marine, wrestler, leader, friend Originally published May 13, 2010ByMegan Eckstein News-Post Staff
The Frederick High School community continues to reel from the shock of losing Cpl. Kurt Shea, 21, who was actively involved at the school and in other local groups.
Shea, who joined the Marine Corps one week after graduating from high school in 2007, was shot and killed in Afghanistan early Monday, which was still Mother's Day Sunday in Frederick . As Shea's family traveled to Dover, Del., on Wednesday morning to receive his body, his friends were trying to comprehend just how much the community has lost.
I love these little insider Seinfeld-like kerfuffles, especially when they involve journalists and especially when they involve the sanctimonious Maureen Dowd:
Reporter Accuses Dowd of - What Else?- Blind Date Profiling
By Betsy Rothstein on May 13, 2010
Former Politico scribe Helena Andrews is calling the date that NYT columnist Maureen Dowd set her up on with Obama aide Reggie Love "racial profiling." Andrews writes about it in the latest issue of Marie Claire.
How dare Dowd assume she wants to date a black man?
One African-American woman pleads not to be set up on a blind date with the only black professional you know.
By Helena Andrews
"I've got a guy for you. He's so hot, it's perfect." It was the spring of '08 when Maureen Dowd, the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist, decided to take it upon herself to find me a man — specifically, Reggie Love, Barack Obama's "body guy" (read: personal aide). Standing outside the auditorium in Philadelphia where Obama the candidate had just given his loaded race speech, I thought to myself, How could a woman I'd helped with a computer problem once as an assistant at the Times spot the man for me? "Don't be silly," she said, when I demurred. "My assistant will set it up."
I was 27 and working as the only black reporter at Politico.com when a black man was running for president. The issue of race in America had hit a fever pitch, and suddenly everyone seemed determined to cast me as Michelle redux — and all that was missing was my very own Barack. [...]
... I'm not saying that my colleagues and neighbors should have set me up with white friends, necessarily. I was just disappointed that, despite all my more awesome qualities, the main thing they all saw was my skin.
Recently, my mother met a black man at Ikea, gave him my card, and then yelled at me when I raised the obvious psycho-killer issues. She said he was nice, a lawyer. Like Maureen, Mom was playing into the kind of stereotypes I was trying to dodge. But I realized that both women just wanted to see me happy. And, even though I was grateful Ikea guy never called, I know that the more weird setups I endure, the better my chances of getting to Mr. Right, whatever his race.
Helena Andrews's memoir, Bitch Is the New Black (HarperCollins), is out this month. She writes a weekly column for Slate's TheRoot.com.

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Talk about optimism.
House Republican leader John Boehner recently said the GOP could pick up 100 seats this November. Now, the Republican National Committee’s political director says the party has its eye on 130.
