Explore Carroll: DAYHOFF: Promoting fun and games has been serious business in Westminster

Summer’s arrival this past week makes one think of summer activities, and it strikes us that it was 61 years ago today — June 26, 1950 — that was the official opening day for Westminster’s first playgrounds, according to newspaper articles of the past...http://www.explorecarroll.com/community/5506/dayhoff-promoting-fun-games-has-been-serious-business-westminster/

North Baltimore Legislators Teach Future Leaders at McDaniel College

Two veteran North Baltimore legislators traveled to McDaniel College in Westminster Wednesday to take part in the American Legion’s 2011 Maryland Boys State program.
Baltimore City Councilman Bill Henry, D-District 4, and Maryland State Del. Samuel I. "Sandy" Rosenberg, D-District 41, shared their experiences with 160 rising high school seniors in the legislative simulation portion of the Future Leadership Development Training School.
The annual American Legion-sponsored summer program is designed to expose high school students to the intricacies and inner workings of the federal, state and local governments. During the week, the future leaders attended hours of classroom instruction, lectures, group discussion and physical training.
Henry, a Baltimore city councilmember since 2007, who represents North and Northeast Baltimore, was fresh from practicing the give-and-take of the legislative process in the real world—the day before, he voted against moving Baltimore’s $1.3 billion operating budget for fiscal year 2012 forward to final approval.
Henry took his seat alongside Rosenberg on the stage at McDaniel’s historic Alumni Hall to be introduced by political science professor Dr. Herb Smith...  http://northbaltimore.patch.com/articles/north-baltimore-legislators-teach-future-leaders-at-mcdaniel-college

Washington Examiner Political Digest: Dems jump the stimulus shark

Washington Examiner Political Digest Dems jump the stimulus shark

Desperate Democrats jump the stimulus shark

"Jumping the shark" refers to TV sitcoms that have run out of ideas and resort to desperate stunts to stay on the air. Yesterday, Democrats, led by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his chief deputies, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois and Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, showed that jumping the shark happens in politics, too. As Reuters reported, Reid and company are demanding that a new stimulus program be included in any deficit reduction agreement, including billions in new spending on highways and clean energy projects.

Michelle Obama: 'I can't stop eating French fries. But eat your vegetables.'

During her visit to South Africa, First Lady Michelle Obama stopped by the University of Cape Town for an event with young people.  She told the audience how she came from modest circumstances and was able to attend top schools and build a career at a big law firm, saying they too can achieve their dreams if they try hard enough.  After her speech, she was asked a series of soft questions like, "What advice can you give the youth today?"

Examiner Local Editorial: Blame the feds for Metro's 'security gap'

"Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority: Is There A Security Gap?" is the subject of a congressional hearing today before the House Subcommittee on District of Columbia, Census and National Archives.

Trial lawyers won't give up on Wal-Mart lawsuits

If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again. That's what trial lawyers are saying about the Supreme Court's Wal-Mart decision, released earlier this week. Wal-Mart is America's largest private employer. On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out the class-action lawsuit alleging sex discrimination filed by three current and former employees on behalf of all 1.5 million current and former female Wal-Mart employees.

Taegan Goddard's Political Dictionary tells us that logrolling isn't just the exciting lumberjack athletic contest that looks like a ballet for tough guys, but also refers to an "informal agreement between legislators to vote for each others' priorities."

For those who may have noticed groups of young men marching around McDaniel College’s campus this week in formation and chanting, rest assured that it’s not a new approach to freshman orientation.

It’s Boys State.

The annual American Legion-sponsored summer program aimed to expose rising high school seniors to the intricacies and working of the federal, state, and local government, came to Westminster this week for its annual session.

During the week, the young future leaders attend hours of classroom instruction, lectures, group discussion and physical training.

This year, 160 boys from throughout Maryland — and three from Germany — are attending the summer residence program on The Hill at McDaniel College. The camp runs June 19-25... http://www.explorecarroll.com/news/5498/american-legion-boys-state-program-taps-leadership-lesson-mcdaniel-college/

Explore Carroll: Ravens won't roost in Westminster for training camp this year due to ongoing NFL lockout

The Ravens will not hold training camp at McDaniel College this summer due to the NFL's ongoing lockout, Ethan Seidel, McDaniel's vice president of administration and finance, said Wednesday.

"Basically, they are not going to be having summer camp up here this summer, simply because at this point the lockout still is in place," Seidel said. "Obviously, they don't even know if they're having anything at all.

"It's just too late to plan on being up here," he said. "That's kind of what we expected."

The loss of the Ravens will have an impact on Westminster overall. Last summer, the Ravens drew more than 112,000 fans to Carroll County to watch practices and collect autographs.

"I think it's a disappointment not just for the college, but the whole Westminster community because there's an economic impact on all kinds of businesses," Seidel said. "We kind of anticipated it."

“Well, it’s a bummer," said Stan Ruchlewicz, administrator for economic development for the City of Westminster. "It’s so disappointing that the Ravens and the fans are not coming to Westminster. ... And in this economy, we were looking forward to that shot in the arm." ...

Camp Politics: Training the Next Generation of Censors Since 1974

An Important Message From The Staff of Camp Politics:

Hat Tip: Clint Brown

Our mission is to train your son or daughter to win political office and then stay there - mainly by using campaign finance laws to suppress political speech that threatens their reelection.

But, unfortunately, many in the public have the absurd idea that free speech should receive the full protection of the First Amendment. One of the chief proponents of this view is the Institute for Justice. It just launched its "Citizen Speech Campaign," which it calls "a multi-state effort to restore full protection to political speech about candidates and ballot issues." If you truly care about your children's future as successful incumbent politicians, please do not allow the Institute to dissuade you from sending them to Camp Politics.

Learn more about the Institute for Justice's Citizen Speech Campaign.
