The late local Carroll County artist Leonard G. LeVee to be featured in the newly renovated Historical Society of Carroll County campus.

February 10, 2026 – Westminster Maryland - Artist Leonard G. LeVee (1903 – 1974) will be featured in an upcoming exhibit in the newly renovated Historical Society of Carroll County Helen A. Gorman Library of Carroll County History at Cockey’s and the adjacent Naganna Exhibits Hall and History Learning Center at Kimmey

Recently Historical Society Exe. Dir. Jason Illari and Arts Council Exe. Dir. Stephen Strosnider - the executive directors of the artistic and cultural bookends of Westminster, the Historical Society of Carroll County on the east end of the city and the Carroll Arts Center on the west end of the city; have been collaborating to bring new and exciting arts and cultural opportunities to Carroll County and the central-Maryland region.

A February 8, 2026 newspaper article written by the Historical Society of Carroll County Executive Director, and Collections Manager Stephanie Eckard details the upcoming reopening of the Historical Society of Carroll County (HSCC) in Westminster.

After being closed for a year for campus improvements, the society will debut several new spaces, including the Helen A. Gorman Library and a rotating art gallery dedicated to local historical art.

The gallery's inaugural exhibit will feature the work of Leonard G. LeVee, a mid-century artist known for his nostalgic Maryland scenes and Baltimore trolley car paintings.

LeVee, who transitioned from electronics sales to full-time art in the 1960s, served as the artist-curator for the Union Mills Homestead and gained recognition for his depictions of local landmarks and military history.

According to writers Illari and Eckard, writing in the Carroll County Times on February 8, 2026: “Leonard G. LeVee III was born in 1903 in Charleston, West Virginia, and died in 1974 in Westminster. He was an American artist specializing in what he once described as ‘nostalgic, historic American scenes.’

“Retiring from his job as an electronics salesman in the mid-1960s to dedicate his life to his art, LeVee would become renowned for his paintings of Baltimore scenes and his work as artist-curator of Union Mills Homestead. LeVee’s paintings have been displayed in galleries and businesses across Baltimore, including the Maryland Historical Society, now known as the Maryland Center for History and Culture. Much of what we know about LeVee comes from a series of Carroll County Times articles published in the 1960s and ’70s…”

The upcoming exhibit was made possible by a recent donation of his work by his family, including pieces that contrast the same Carroll County farm across different seasons. To round out the collection, the HSCC is currently seeking other unknown LeVee paintings from the community for potential inclusion in the exhibit.
