Gainful employment guarantees the revenue stream that supports schools, infrastructure and other essential services. Our area has been spared many of the most severe effects of the economic downturn that have befallen other areas of the country. Nevertheless, we still have too many citizens who are unemployed, underemployed or concerned about their job security. We must determine the best approaches for creating a robust economic recovery following the deepest recession in decades. We are fortunate to have a wide diversity of businesses and industries. Our leading employer, Fort Detrick, and its strategic partners are poised for growth. Between Fort Detrick and the National Cancer Institute an additional 2,500 new jobs are expected during the next five years.
