Everglades Foundation Releases Economic Study

Everglades Foundation Releases Economic Study Detailing Financial Return on Investment From Restoring America’s Everglades

First-of-its-Kind Economic Study on Everglades Restoration Highlights Projected Rise in Job Creation, Real Estate Values Among Other Benefits

Palmetto Bay, Fla.—(Oct. 18, 2010)— Today, the Everglades Foundation released the results of a comprehensive analysis of the financial return on investment generated by restoration of America’s Everglades ecosystem.

The study, conducted by Mather Economics, projects that restoration will produce an increase in economic benefits of approximately $46.5 billion that could range up to $123.9 billion based on an investment of $11.5 billion.

"It is clear that Everglades restoration not only produces ecological benefits, but also generates a robust economic boost to our economy.  For every dollar spent on Everglades restoration, we are getting four dollars back in the form of higher home values, increased tourism and stronger fishing, boating and tourism industries," said Kirk Fordham, CEO, Everglades Foundation.  "When we invest in protecting and restoring the Everglades, we are also revving up a powerful job creation engine.  Aside from the good paying jobs in construction, engineering and the sciences that come with restoration projects, we are boosting employment in a wide range of industries."

The study shows that for every one dollar spent on Everglades restoration as part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), $4.04 will be generated in economic benefits.  Projections indicate that there will be an incremental impact on employment of about 442,644 additional jobs over 50 years. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also estimates there will be 22,966 new short- to mid-term jobs created as a result of actual restoration projects.

“Let’s think about the basic ecosystem services provided by the Everglades as a grocery store featuring ‘products’ ranging from water purification to enhanced tourism.  We created six distinct aisles or divisions and a catch-all section. For each of these categories, we conservatively estimated, using best available data and economic methods, the increase in economic value of a restored Everglades ecosystem,” said Bobby McCormick, Ph.D., Mather Economics’ principal investigator assigned to the project. “The bottom line, as our analysis strongly suggests, is that the rewards of restoration far outweigh the economic costs.”

In addition, the study shows that Everglades restoration will result in added value to the economy of $5,129 per individual residing in the 16-county South Florida Water Management District.

"Too often, we hear arguments that we can't afford to invest in Everglades restoration during an economic downturn.  Instead, smart policymakers recognize that the future of our state's economic growth depends on protecting the Everglades and the water supply it provides to one in three Floridians. Simply put: we can't grow our economy if we allow the Everglades to collapse," said Fordham.

“Measuring the Economic Benefits of America’s Everglades Restoration: An Economic Evaluation of Ecosystem Services Affiliated with the World’s Largest Ecosystem,” is available in its entirety at www.evergladesfoundation.org in the "Reports and Surveys" section of the website.

About Florida’s Relationship with the Everglades

More than seven million people live in the Everglades watershed and depend on its natural systems for their livelihood, food and drinking water. Florida’s agriculture, boating, tourism, real estate, recreational and commercial fishing industries all depend on a healthy Everglades ecosystem, which supports tens of thousands of jobs and contributing billions to our economy. Its waters flow through Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, Biscayne National Park and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Together, these parks draw several million visitors each year, contributing hundreds of millions of dollars to Florida’s tourism economy.

Investigative Voice: Lawsuit that could stall construction on Baltimore Orioles’ new spring training home in judge’s hands

NEWS FLASH — Lawsuit that could stall construction on Baltimore Orioles’ new spring training home in judge’s hands

A lawsuit challenging the legality of a $31 million deal that moved the Baltimore Orioles' spring training home from Ft. Lauderdale to Sarasota is now in the hands of a Florida Circuit Court judge.

Based on what the judge decides, the challenge could be overruled or renovations on the Orioles' spring training stadium could be halted.

“Citizens for Sunshine” and “Citizens for Responsible Government” filed a lawsuit last year alleging Sarasota’s county commissioners violated the state’s Sunshine Laws when they discussed the details of the 30-year deal privately in both emails and phone conversations.

But the Sarasota Herald Tribune reported the county commissioners argued in court and during testimony that the deal was the “most transparent ever.” .... http://www.investigativevoice.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4789:news-flash-lawsuit-that-could-stall-construction-on-baltimore-orioles-new-spring-training-home-in-judges-hands&catid=25:the-project&Itemid=44

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay Florida

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay Florida

February 20, 2010 by Kevin Dayhoff

The five-and-a-half mile, $244 million structure which spans from Terra Ceia - Bradenton in Manatee County to St. Petersburg, Florida is the world's longest cable-stayed concrete bridge. The roadway is built to provide clearance of 190 feet above the water where the bridge spans the shipping channel.

It was opened to traffic on April 20, 1987 and is a part of the I-275 - US 19 road network.

A previous bridge, which stood in approximately the same position in the bay, was built in 1954, was partially destroyed in the morning of May 9, 1980, when a freighter, the “Summit Venture,” collided with the bridge resulting in 35 people losing their lives.

Unfortunately, the magnificent structure has also attracted personal tragedies. As many as 127 persons have jumped to their death from the bridge according to a St. Petersburg Times newspaper article by Jamie Jones, published October 6, 2003: “Skyway safeguards don't deter jumpers - At least 10 people have jumped already this year, despite crisis phones and 24-hour patrols.” What a paradox that such a beautiful structure would be used for something so unpleasant.

According to a report by Jose Garcia, "The Skyway Bridge - Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow,” for the Florida Department of Transportation, the bridge rates Travel Channel’s No. 3 of “Top 10 Bridges.”

It is not to be missed…

WWSB ABC 7: Orioles pitchers catchers report Wed

SARASOTA - The Baltimore Orioles are getting ready to start spring training in Sarasota. And despite all the games that have gone on trying to get this team here, the staff and players are ready to play ball.

Players have already begun to arrive, as pitchers and catchers will report for their first day Wednesday.

A lot goes into spring training. Not only do the players and coaches pick up and move...so does most of the Orioles administrative staff. And being the team's first spring back in Sarasota, there is a lot of work going on at Ed Smith Stadium to make sure the players feel right at home.

"We are absolutely thrilled. We couldn't be more excited to be coming to this community," says Orioles director of public relations Monica Barlow.

Spring training games begin in just two weeks, and the new team on the Ed Smith Stadium field will be the Baltimore Orioles. "Camp will be pretty big...a lot of familiar faces for fans and then a lot of the young and new guys as well," says Barlow.

The Orioles arrive at their new spring training home after leaving Fort Lauderdale, their spring training home for the last 14 years. And to get ready for their debut, the stadium has gone to the birds.

Selby History

Retrieved February 18, 2009

Marie Selby was born Mariah Minshall in Wood County, West Virginia, on August 9, 1885. When Marie was still a young girl, the Minshall family moved to Marietta, Ohio where her father studied geology at Marietta College and invented parts for oil drilling equipment. The Minshall family frequently went on camping and hiking trips along the Ohio River; perhaps it was this early introduction to nature that spawned in Marie her love of the out-of-doors.

Marie was an accomplished pianist, and attended a music seminary in Illinois. Shortly after completing her musical studies she met William (Bill) Selby, a partner with his father in the Selby Oil and Gas Company. William and Marie were married on January 31, 1908, in the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta.

Early in their marriage the young couple was intrigued by the country's first cross-country automobile race. They decided to travel the same course, and outfitted their touring car with spare parts and camping equipment. As a result of the Selby's enthusiasm and determination, Marie Selby became the first woman to cross the country by car.

Bill Selby had visited Sarasota before his marriage and was drawn into the area by the excellent fishing waters and the astounding beauty of the west coast of Florida. He brought his young wife to Sarasota in hopes that she would share his enthusiasm. She did, and they bought seven acres of land bordering on Sarasota Bay and Hudson Bayou. Little did they dream, at that moment, of the exquisite Sarasota landmark their property would become in the not-so-distant future.

In the early 1920s the Selbys built a Spanish-style, 2-story house among the laurel and banyan trees. Landscaping of the Selby home site was planned by Marie. Borders of flowers bloomed along the roadway which led to the tip of the peninsula. A large rose garden figured prominently in the overall design - a garden Marie was always reluctant to leave behind during summers spent at the Selby ranch in Montana.

Despite their enormous wealth (vast holdings in the oil and mining industries had made Bill Selby a multimillionaire long before he settled in Sarasota); the Selbys lived a quiet and unostentatious life. Their home was modest, they entertained on a small scale, and they were not a part of the Sarasota social scene. Both Marie and Bill Selby dressed plainly, for their interests lay in outdoor activities. You would often find her in cotton dresses and sneakers.

They owned a ranch where they raised purebred Angus cattle and rode horses; often they could be seen around town in their dusty riding clothes.

Boating was another favorite activity at the Sarasota Yacht Club. In 1928, a reception was held at the Selby home for local members and visiting members of other yacht clubs participating in the annual Regatta. That year, Marie Selby won the "Express Cruiser Race" and the Sarasota Yacht Club won overall, retaining the trophy won in 1927.

Yet one guesses that Marie's love of nature and of gardening was her most consuming passion. She was a charter member of Sarasota's first garden club, the Founder's Circle. She had a great desire to keep Sarasota a beautiful and green place and was disturbed later in life by the proliferation of high-rise construction. The row of bamboo on the bay side of the property was planted by Marie to block her view of the offending condominiums.
The Selby Legacy

In 1955, William Selby had established the William and Marie Selby Foundation. The impact of Selby Foundation in the Sarasota community has been, and continues to be, enormous - on education, the arts, youth and children, libraries, health services, and programs in support of the aged.

William Selby died on December 4, 1956 and Marie continued to live quietly in the home she loved until her death on June 9, 1971. The contents of Marie Selby's will revealed her wish to leave her property to the community as a botanical garden "for the enjoyment of the general public."

A board of directors was appointed and after consultation with the New York Botanical Garden and the University of Florida, it was decided that the garden should specialize in epiphytic plants, thereby making it unique among the more than 200 botanical gardens in the country.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens was officially opened to the public on July 7, 1975. Marie Selby's final wish was fulfilled, and the Selby legacy was in full bloom.

In November 2001, William and Marie Selby were reinterred in front of their beloved home on the grounds of Selby Gardens. A triangular-shaped fountain pays tribute to this pioneering couple whose generosity has touched generations of Sarasotans. A plaque on the Selby House honors Marie as a Great Floridian, so named by the Florida Legislature in 2000 for her significant contributions to the history and culture of the state.

Selby Gardens Today

Since the Gardens opened, the property has expanded from seven acres to nearly 13 acres. The elegant Mansion on adjoining property was purchased in 1973 and now houses the Gardens' Museum. The Gardens maintains a plant collection numbering more than 20,000 greenhouse plants, plus thousands more in the outdoor gardens. Eight greenhouses include the stunning Tropical Display House where unusual flora can be seen year round. The Center for Tropical Plant Science and Conservation provides headquarters for The Bromeliad Identification Center, the Orchid Identification Center and the Selby Gardens' Herbarium.

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has, in short, become a respected center for research and education, as well as a famous showplace that delights more than 180,000 visitors each year.

This palm tree greeted me as I walked out of the Sarasota Airport the first thing in the afternoon, Monday, February 16, 2009 and left the cold of Maryland behind.

20080222 “Those crazy Keys” by Blair Lee Gazette

Those crazy Keys by Blair Lee Gazette

I always enjoy Blair Lee’s approach to commentary, however, after having only recently returned from a week in Key West myself, I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Lee’s take on “Those crazy Keys.”

Read on and enjoy:

Those crazy Keys

My Maryland | Blair Lee Friday, Feb. 22, 2008

Life begins when the kids leave home and the dog dies. Or, in my case, when my wife and I leave the dog with the kids and spend a few mid-winter weeks in the Florida Keys.

Here’s the best way to describe the Keys to Marylanders: Make the Delmarva barrier islands from Rehoboth to Cape Charles into a single county (Monroe) connected by a single highway (Route 1) with Ocean City (Key West) at the southernmost tip. Then relocate it to the Caribbean with an offshore coral reef making it a fishing paradise. Or as a local sports columnist writes, ‘‘The fish come to the Keys for the same reason the tourists do: food, sex and comfort.” And, of course, drinking.

Fishing, drinking and sun worshiping are the chief local pastimes. There are more marinas than car dealerships and more bait and tackle shops than 7-Elevens. The local paper has a daily ‘‘catch of the day” photo and the Walgreens sells frozen chum (bait) and hard liquor.

During the winter months, the Keys are the warmest spot in continental America. Local high school baseball, softball and tennis are already under way and we needed car and motel a⁄c most days.

[…]

But in most respects the Keys are more casual, friendly, ramshackle and eccentric than ‘‘back home.” Where else can you find a ‘‘Jack Nicklaus-designed putting green?” And crime in the Keys is more likely to be lobster trap-raiding than carjacking.

There’s always something weird going on… […]

But the weirdest things in the Keys are the people. For instance, November’s Monroe County elections include a sheriff’s candidate running on a ‘‘legalize pot” platform and a commissioner candidate who says he gets daily instructions from angels while he sleeps. Then there’s Susan Stanton seeking a city manager job she⁄he formally held as Steve Stanton.

20070810 what does YOUR fridge say about YOU?

Thank Goodness it’s Friday, August 10, 2007

I was amused when I noticed this video (see below) on YouTube.

My relationship with my refrigerator is special.

Posted above is a picture of my refrigerator when I was in Key West Florida this past February 2007.

Here is a picture of me worshiping the refrigerator a number of years ago in Nags Head, the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

So what is in your refrigerator?

Carrie Ann Knauer, the Rachael Ray of Carroll County says that she has blueberries in her refrigerator at the moment.

PS: The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber is one of my many favorite short stories by Mr. Hemingway. Published in 1936, it was initially overshadowed by “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” which came out the same year. It was later made into a movie, which featured Gregory Peck and Joan Bennett. I have never seen the movie but have told that it is a classic…

The story is a quick read at 11,188 words. It can found on the net here: The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber
