Rep. Henry Waxman is making America's health insurance companies an offer they can't refuse.

Like a mafia underboss trying to face down a rival crime family, the powerful California Democratic chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee has resorted to ugly intimidation tactics with opponents of government-run health care.

In the spirit of Joe McCarthy, earlier this week, Waxman and House Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Bart Stupak, D-MI, sent a letter to 52 of the nation's largest health insurance companies that contained a not-so-veiled threat.

Waxman and Stupak's letter demanded detailed information from health insurance companies about executive pay, corporate conferences and retreats, and other business practices.

For any employees or officers making more than $500,000 a year in the past six years, the congressmen are demanding details on salaries, bonuses, pensions and other compensation.

They're asking for a list of conferences and retreats that are paid for by insurance companies. They're also insisting that insurance companies disclose the identity of all board members and their compensation.

According to the letter, all this information must be provided by Sept. 14 as part of an investigation of "executive compensation and other business practices in the health insurance industry."

Imagine that. An investigation of health insurance compensation launched by two powerful Democratic House Committee Chairmen in the midst of a coordinated campaign to vilify health insurance companies.

As far as intimidation tactics go, this latest move by Waxman and Stupak makes the White House's effort to "flag" online political opponents look small time.

MSNBC SINKS TO NEW LOW: Doesn’t Show Race of Man Carrying Gun at Obama Rally

MSNBC SINKS TO NEW LOW: Doesn’t Show Race of Man Carrying Gun at Obama Rally

Special Guests - August 20, 2009

On Monday, at a VFW rally for Barack Obama in Arizona a black man made news on CNN when he showed up with an assault weapon and a pistol strapped to his shoulder and waist respectively.

At MSNBC guns in full view at an event where the president was speaking was newsworthy. However, the race of the man actually carrying them didn’t square with what they were reporting - that anti-Obama protesters are racists with itchy trigger fingers ready to go off half-cocked.

It certainly didn’t fit the paradigm of biased media outlets. Is that a sufficient reason to manipulate news footage to perpetuate that paradigm?

Is that what happened? The video shown clearly does not show the race of the man. Nor is his race identified by any of the three people discussing the issue.

In fact, Contessa Brewer at one point says, “Here you have a man of color in the presidency and white people showing up with guns strapped to their waste.” Click the link to view the segment and judge for yourself.

Majority in Post-ABC Poll Say Afghan War Not Worth Fighting

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

A majority of Americans now see the war in Afghanistan as not worth fighting and just a quarter say more U.S. troops should be sent to the country, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Most have confidence in the ability of the United States to meet its primary goals — defeating the Taliban, facilitating effective economic development and molding an honest and effective Afghan government — but very few say Thursday’s elections there are likely to produce such a government.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver remembered

Eunice Kennedy Shriver remembered for founding the Special Olympics

Sunday August 16, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff

Some folks have asked where they may find my tribute to Eunice Kennedy Shriver, “Shriver remembered for Special Olympics and also for a connection to Carroll that appeared my Carroll Eagle Archives column on Sunday August 16, 2009

So I thought what I would do is post the long version which is unedited to meet word limit…

Last Tuesday, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, died at a hospital on Cape Cod surrounded by several generations of her large family. She was 88 years old.

Inspired by her sister, Rosemary Kennedy, who was born mentally retarded, Shriver founded the Special Olympics in 1968 for persons with intellectual disabilities.

As a child, Rosemary and Eunice Kennedy are reported to have spent a great deal of time together swimming and sailing. Rosemary died in 2005.

Shriver earned a sociology degree from Stanford University in 1943 and subsequently worked as a social worker at a prison for women in Alderson, W. Va, and the juvenile courts system in Chicago, before she took over the philanthropic foundation named after her brother, Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., who had been killed fighting in WW II.

Throughout her lifetime received numerous awards for her work with children. In 1962, when no one spoke in public about the mentally handicapped, Shriver broke the ice and turned on the light on the plight of the handicapped.

It was then that she “revealed her sister's condition to the nation during her brother's presidency in a 1962 article for the Saturday Evening Post,” according to a number of historical accounts of Shriver’s incredible life of service to our nation.

A year earlier, in 1961, President Kennedy “signed a bill she championed to form the first President's Committee on Mental Retardation,” according to news accounts.

Shriver was the fifth of nine children in the family of Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy were two of her more famous brothers.

Many folks will also remember her as the mother of former NBC newswoman Maria Shriver; and the mother-in-law of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

She married R. Sargent Shriver, from Willis Street in Westminster, in 1953. Sargent is a member of the historic Shriver family in Carroll County, known as community, political and business leaders; whose heritage has been, in part, preserved by the Union Mills Homestead.

He later became President Kennedy’s first director of the Peace Corps. He was also Sen. George McGovern's running mate in 1972, and ran for president himself in 1976. It is reported that the couple were very close and that she was an integral part of her husband’s political career.

However, it is through the Special Olympics that she will live on through the ages.

She was the daughter of a millionaire, the sister of a president and a U.S. Senator, and the mother-in-law of a governor; however she is best known for her tireless lifelong commitment to the mentally handicapped – and the Special Olympics.

Tovia Smith said it best on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered:” Shriver “was born to one of America’s most powerful families but spent her life laboring for some of the least powerful.”

Hippy Dippy Stardust and Golden Memories
Kevin E. Dayhoff
In case you missed all the recent over-hyped media coverage, forty years ago the weekend of peace, love, and revolution took place in the garden at Max Yasgur’s 600-acre farm in upstate New York.

Saving The Rainforests
Tom McLaughlin
Kuching, Indonesia – Lions and tigers, oh my! Save the rainforest! We must have the biodiversity! The jungle absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. We need it or we will die!

National Rage
Roy Meachum
Whatever the topic, the reaction is rage. In some circles the mention of “abortion” brings heated words. The state of the economy launches tirades. But I’ve never seen the furor erupted by President Barack Obama’s hopes to reform the national health care.

A Brave New World – Sixth Grade Math
Nick Diaz
The job of the typical middle and high school mathematics teacher is a challenging one, as evidenced by the kinds of questions and statements made by students, parents, and school administrators; these are the people who comprise our “constituency,” if I may.

The Long Reach of the Tentacles
Steven R. Berryman
Having been on my “staycation” last week, I did not present my usual column last week. With so much transpiring in the meantime, here come some mini-Tentacles in an effort to catch up and to make up!

Friday Mornings with Bob
Roy Meachum
With astonishment, two different friends said to me this week that they were surprised to hear me talking about movies with Bob Miller (WFMD 930AM). I was surprised. Bob and I have chatted mainly about films – but all sorts of things – on his Morning News Express for more than several years.

Get Out Of The Way! Or Else!
Joe Charlebois
The left wing machine is pushing the idea that opponents and skeptics of arguably the most sweeping change to our free market system are stooges or tools of corporate interests or a large right wing cabal. The leaders of these attacks on town hall participants are coming from the most politically powerful members of Congress and the White House itself.

Standing in the Battle Line
Chris Cavey
Occasionally in political life you have one of those “ah-ha” moments. Late Monday afternoon at Towson University was such a moment for me – and Sen. Ben Cardin, too.

Too Many Adventures and Then Some
Joan McIntyre
Let’s hope my daughters don't read this article. They hate when I talk about them. But, isn't that a mother’s prerogative in some twisted way. Don’t labor pains equate to the right to use your children for article material. Okay, so maybe that isn't an exact interpretation, but work with me here, please.

Free Speech was great while it lasted
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Maryland’s Democrat U. S. Senator Ben Cardin got quite an earful at a town hall meeting Monday night in Towson on healthcare reform. Although I choose not to attend, according to many published accounts, those who did go soundly jeered and booed him throughout the evening.

Of “Birthers” and “Blue Dogs”
Michael Kurtianyk
I love language. I especially like the etymology of words and phrases. Did you know, for example, that the “dog days” of summer actually relates to Sirius, the “dog star,” which rises and sets with the sun?

Poisonous Partisanship
Roy Meachum
The United States Supreme Court has a new associate justice. Despite GOP hard-core opposition, Sonia Sottomeyer was sworn in the day after the Senate approved her appointment, 68-31. On Thursday, the Senate passed the “refill” of “Cash for Clunkers,” 60-37. Republicans lost both times.

Cause, Effect, and Solution
Farrell Keough
We have seen this scenario played out before – in fact, the Holy Bible speaks to third generations not embracing the religion of their parents. In short, it is the values, traditions, and work ethic of our parents and grandparents being pushed aside for a more progressive vision.

Defining Activism
Richard B. Weldon Jr.
MoveOn.org, that bastion of liberal thinking, is now in the business of defining speech. They’ve always considered themselves better than everyone else, now they’re defining by just how much they are better.

Woodstock: Hippy Dippy Stardust and Golden Memories

Hippy Dippy Stardust and Golden Memories by Kevin E. Dayhoff August 19, 2009

In case you missed all the recent over-hyped media coverage, forty years ago the weekend of peace, love, and revolution took place in the garden at Max Yasgur’s 600-acre farm in upstate New York.

For the past number of weeks, much of the media has waxed poetic about the self-aggrandizing maniacal mayhem which took place August 15-18, 1969 – the Woodstock Music and Art Fair in Bethel, N.Y.

What happened to the antiwar movement? Cindy Sheehan responds.

What happened to the antiwar movement? Cindy Sheehan responds.

By:
Byron York Chief Political Correspondent 08/18/09 11:19 PM EDT

After my column,
"For the left, war without Bush is not war at all," appeared Tuesday, I got a note from Cindy Sheehan, the anti-war activist who was the subject of so much press coverage when she led a protest against the Iraq war outside then-President George W. Bush's ranch in Texas. This is what the note said:

“I read your column about the "anti-war" movement and I can't believe I am saying this, but I mostly agree with you.

“The "anti-war" "left" was used by the Democratic Party. I like to call it the "anti-Republican
War" movement…”

“The roads are so littered with enemy bombs that nearly all transport and resupply to this base occurs by helicopter. The pilots roar through the darkness, swoop into small bases nestled in the saddle of enemy territory, and quickly rumble off into the night….”
