Colonial East Main Street Westminster is reflected in the window of the front door at the new coffee shop, Birdie’s Café, which just opened at 233 East Main Street.

To the delight of many a Main Street Westminster caffeine addict, Sherri Hosfeld Joseph opened a coffee shop - Birdie’s Café www.birdiescoffee.com on July 13, 2010.

Joseph, a professional artist, designer, and photographer, was able to utilize much of the fixtures and equipment left behind almost two-years ago, however, she has worked since last January meticulously cleaning, painting, and planning and researching every detail for the shop with co-workers Danes Menges and Emily White

… local artists Susan Williamson and Becki Maurio seated at the table…

Customers Alex Stamm and Jenna Winegar, North Carroll High School graduates from Hampstead, were more than happy to take a break from their computer and answer a few questions.

Gazette - Sherry Greenfield: Adam Avery adds ‘Inc.' to ‘Friends of Frederick County' in bid to support development

Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010

A new fight is brewing in the politics of growth in Frederick County, this time revolving around how one defines "friend."

Adam Avery of Frederick, host of 930 AM WFMD's "Senior Talk Radio" and an emerging outspoken figure in local politics, announced this week that he is president and owner of a new organization called "Friends of Frederick County Inc."

Avery's new group is intended to be the opposite of "Friends of Frederick County," which emerged in the 2006 election to fight what it considers to be urban sprawl and poorly planned development.

Instead of fighting development, however, Avery said his group will encourage it and highlight the benefits growth brings.

"I found [Friends of Frederick County] to be poorly organized and poorly funded," Avery said. "And I wanted to bring a positive light to the men and women who risk their [financial] lives to bring businesses to Frederick County."

But Friends of Frederick County is not pleased with Avery's move... http://www.gazette.net/stories/08122010/frednew154724_32535.php

Time to admit Obamanomics has failed

Time to admit Obamanomics has failed

Examiner Editorial
August 8, 2010

It's no coincidence that Christina Romer, chairwoman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, announced her retirement the day before Friday's brutal unemployment report. With 131,000 more jobs lost in July, and downward revisions of 97,000 for the previous two months, it's easy to see why she would start looking for the exits.

Two well-paying blue-collar employers in Washington County are shuttering their businesses, adding to the woes of this Western Maryland county that already has a jobless rate among the highest in the state.

The soaring unemployment rate is a painful step back for a county that has tried in recent years to diversify its economy and attract new, high-technology businesses to the area. Known as "Hub City," Hagerstown has been at the center of a regional economy for years, with its highway connections and rail lines offering trucking and distribution companies easy access.

But over the past three years, the weakening economy has bled the Hagerstown area of jobs, mainly related to construction and manufacturing. In 2006, Washington County's unemployment rate averaged about 4.4 percent. In June, it stood at more than 10 percent and has been as high as nearly 12 percent this year, while the state's hovers just above 7 percent.

And just this past week, the county was reeling from news that two employers — a Northrop Grumman airplane maintenance facility and auto parts maker Kongsberg Automotive — plan to close, putting more than 100 people out of work…. www.baltimoresun.com/business/bs-bz-western-maryland-layoffs-20100808,0,6561796.story

The Obama presidency increasingly resembles a modern-day Ancien Régime: extravagant and out of touch with the American people

The Obama presidency increasingly resembles a modern-day Ancien Régime: extravagant and out of touch with the American people

By Nile Gardiner Last updated: August 7th, 2010

What the great French historian Alexis de Tocqueville would make of today’s Obama administration were he alive today is anyone’s guess. But I would wager that the author ofL’Ancien Régime and Democracy in America would be less than impressed with the extravagance and arrogance on display among the White House elites that rule America as though they had been handed some divine right to govern with impunity.

It is the kind of impunity that has been highlighted on the world stage this week by Michelle Obama’s hugely costly trip to Spain, which has prompted a New York Post columnist Andrea Tantaros to dub the First Lady a contemporary Marie Antoinette. As The Telegraph reports, while the Obamas are covering their own vacation expenses such as accommodation, the trip may cost US taxpayers as much as $375,000 in terms of secret service security and flight costs on Air Force Two.

The timing of this lavish European vacation could not have come at a worse moment, when unemployment in America stands at 10 percent, and large numbers of Americans are fighting to survive financially in the wake of the global economic downturn. It sends a message of indifference, even contempt, for the millions of Americans who are struggling just to feed their families on a daily basis and pay the mortgage, while the size of the national debt balloons to Greek-style proportions.

While the liberal-dominated US mainstream media have largely ignored the story, it is all over the blogosphere and talk radio, and will undoubtedly add to the President’s free falling poll ratings. ... http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/nilegardiner/100050002/the-obama-presidency-increasingly-resembles-a-modern-day-ancien-regime-extravagant-and-out-of-touch-with-ordinary-people/

Commentary: Maryland's economic deterioration is 'progress'? By Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/08/06/AR2010080605931.html

By Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) often refers to his tenure in Annapolis as one of "progress," implicitly arguing that Maryland is better off today than when he took office.

Nowhere could this argument lack more credibility than on Maryland's economic climate, which is unquestionably less friendly to job creation than it was four years ago.

Consider the evidence: Unemployment in Maryland doubled from 2006 to 2010. Approximately 3,000 small businesses closed on the O'Malley administration's watch last year.

Neighboring Virginia easily outranks Maryland in eight out of 10 categories in CNBC's America's Top States for Business survey, including overall economy, quality of life, business friendliness, transportation and cost of living. Maryland has become a flyover state as businesses like Northrop Grumman move their corporate headquarters and jobs to the other side of the Potomac River. Since 2006, the Tax Foundation has dropped Maryland 26 spots in its ranking of the states' business tax climates.

The causes for Maryland's decline are clear. By passing the largest tax increase in Maryland history before a recession, Gov. O'Malley siphoned sorely needed dollars from job creators and families across the income scale. Second, regulatory agencies began treating small businesses as a source of new fines and tax revenue rather than a source of new jobs. Lastly, government spending in Maryland over the past four years increased by $22 billion compared with the preceding four years. Not surprisingly, a $1.8 billion deficit awaits the next governor and legislature.

As governor, I will redefine "progress" in Maryland by focusing on three priorities. ... [...] .... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/08/06/AR2010080605931.html

Carroll County Sheriff's Office: “Strikeforce nabs Intoxicated Drivers during first weekend of patrols”

Strikeforce nabs Intoxicated Drivers during first weekend of patrols”

Effort part of State’s goal “Toward Zero Deaths” in August

Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland, August 9, 2010 ---- In an effort to reduce the fatalities caused by impaired driving, Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputies began a month long intensive enforcement initiative this weekend, stopping 148 motorists along Carroll roadways for motor vehicle law violations, seven of which resulted in the arrest of impaired drivers. Additional arrests included three suspended drivers, and one motorist who was in possession of personal use quantities of marijuana and associated paraphernalia.

Last year alcohol and drug use were a factor in twenty-nine percent (29%) of fatal collisions in Maryland in spite of law enforcement arresting more than 24,000 impaired drivers. Maryland’s alcohol limit is .08, which can be reached by consuming as little as one drink over a one-hour period. For those under age 21, Maryland’s zero tolerance law requires the arrest for the presence of any alcohol. Through strategic enforcement efforts and promoting awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office will work toward reducing the number of alcohol and drug related traffic collisions, injuries and fatalities.

Each weekend during the month of August, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office will join forces with the Maryland office of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and allied law enforcement agencies as part of the “Checkpoint Strikeforce” campaign. The Deputies primary objective will be enforcing those violations indicative of impaired driving while using the opportunity to heighten public awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and send a clear message to violators that impaired driving will not be tolerated.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office encourages people to drink responsibly, and reminds motorists to designate a sober driver before consuming any alcohol, call a taxi or other public transportation, and don’t let others who are impaired take to the road.

They should be warned that the person they are selling to could well be an undercover officer. I wish to express my sincere thanks to Chief Kim Dine of the Frederick Police Department and his capable staff for their assistance with this investigation. Interagency cooperation, such as that demonstrated in this case, is essential if we are to be successful in these times of stretched resources and lean budgets.”

The Tentacle: "The New Normal" by Kevin Dayhoff

August 11, 2010

The New Normal

Kevin E. Dayhoff http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3907

Watching friends, loved-ones and colleagues fight the day-to-day ravages of joblessness has become overwhelmingly disturbing and upsetting. At the beginning of what is now being referred to as the Great Recession in 2007, there was hope that it was just an adjustment in the nation’s economy and that it would come and go as it has in the past.

It has not. It lingers.

The current background at this point in time in the Great Recession is the hopelessness that accompanied a headline in The New York Times last Friday that read, “U.S. Lost 131,000 Jobs as Governments Cut Back.” “Over all, the nation lost 131,000 jobs last month, according to the Department of Labor, which also said that June was far weaker than previously indicated.”

In an August 7, 2010, article in The New York Times, “Jobless and Staying That Way,” Nelson D. Schwartz observes: “The ‘new normal,’ as it has come to be called … envisions an economy in which growth is too slow to bring down the unemployment rate, while the government is forced to intervene ever more forcefully in a struggling private sector.”

In reality the new normal is still being defined and many feel that a profoundly different approach needs to take place before the final definition is defined by history.

There remains a hope that the current failed approach to the economy – Obamanomics – will not be the final word on the new normal, much as the New Deal has come to be understood, by too many armchair political-economists, to have saved our nation from the Great Depression, when nothing could be farther from the truth.

Unfortunately there is little hope in sight for a fundamental change in the disastrous economic agenda of President Barack Obama and the Democrat regime in power in Congress until after the November elections... http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3907
