1. Enchanted Matthews Holds Up His Own 'Health Reform Is a BFD' T-Shirt
Touting how “the Democratic National Committee has turned a lemon into lemonade,” MSNBC's Chris Matthews on Friday afternoon proudly held up a DNC-produced T-shirt which picks up on Joe Biden's comment that passage of health reform is a “big f***ing deal.” Matthews exclaimed: “Just $25 for a piece of delightfully unscripted history!” The Hardball host reported “the shirts have temporarily sold out, but,” he boasted as he held up one in front of him, “I've got my own right here. If you had to ask, extra large. There it is. 'Health care reform, BFD.' There it is.” He then plugged his next topic: “Up next, the latest example of the far right gone mad...”

2. CBS's Smith Asks Obama About Talk Radio 'Enmity': 'Does it Bother You?'
In a fawning interview with President Obama on Thursday, CBS Early Show co-host Harry Smith spoke of the "enmity" of conservative talk radio and sympathetically wondered: "Does it bother you a little bit?" The President replied: "you end up getting a pretty thick skin in this job....I am concerned about a political climate in which the other side is demonized." Smith portrayed talk radio critics of Obama as extreme: "I've been spending time out and about, listening to talk radio. The kindest of terms you're sometimes referred to, out in America, is a 'socialist.' The worst of which I've heard is called a 'Nazi.' Are you aware of the level of enmity that crosses the air waves and that people have made part of their conversation about you?"

3. CBS's Harry Smith Shoots Some B-Ball With Presidential Pal
In addition to the softball interview CBS's Harry Smith conducted with President Obama on Thursday, the Early Show co-host also played some one-on-one with the commander in chief on the White House basketball court, declaring on Friday's show: "it's not just talk, there's a little action too, as we bring in Clark Kellogg of CBS Sports to check out the President's basketball skills." In honor of Good Friday, at the top of show, Smith used some religious language to describe where the game took place: "This is the sanctum sanctorum....I'm not sure anybody has ever really been down there with cameras before."

4. Tapper Sees 'Indictment of Ayn Rand' and Her Faith in 'Laissez-Faire Capitalism'
Invoking the name of objectivist/libertarian writer-philosopher Ayn Rand, hardly a common citation in television news, ABC’s Jake Tapper, on Sunday’s This Week, confronted former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan with how he recognized a “flaw” in his perspective as he had conceded “markets cannot necessarily be trusted to completely police themselves.” Tapper wondered: "But isn't it more than a flaw? Isn't it an indictment of Ayn Rand and the view that laissez-faire capitalism can be expected to function properly, that markets can be trusted to police themselves?"

5. Time Mag Chief Stengel: Obama a Mandela for the 21st Century, Mandela's 'True Successor'
Time magazine Managing Editor Richard Stengel, who was part of the roundtable on Sunday’s Meet the Press, wrote in a new book released on Tuesday: “It is impossible to write about Nelson Mandela these days and not compare him to another potentially transformational black leader, Barack Obama. The parallels are many.” In the introduction to ‘Mandela’s Way: Fifteen Lessons on Life, Love, and Courage,’ Stengel, who in 1999 took a brief detour from liberal advocacy inside of journalism to more directly advancing a liberal cause as senior adviser and chief speechwriter for failed Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley, asserted: "While it took twenty-seven years in prison to mold the Nelson Mandela we know, the forty-eight-year-old American President seems to have achieved a Mandela-like temperament without the long years of sacrifice. Obama’s self-discipline, his willingness to listen and to share credit, his inclusion of his rivals in his administration, and his belief that people want things explained, all seem like a twenty-first century version of Mandela’s values and persona."

6. Sawyer Champions 'Super-Cop' Regulator as 'Gladiator' Against Health Insurance Industry
ABC anchor Diane Sawyer, who in February demanded to know who will “keep insurance companies from jacking up premiums while making huge profits?”, on Friday found her champion in the Superintendent of Maine’s Bureau of Insurance, hailing Mila Kofman as a “super-cop” and a “gladiator” for rejecting a rate hike requested by Anthem Blue Cross. Kofman proclaimed “we are the super-cops on the street. I take that responsibility as an insurance regulator very seriously,” a self-promotional description Sawyer adopted in her introduction, touting “a woman in Maine who is acting as a super-cop, and telling the insurance companies ‘no.’”

7. Chris Matthews Says Republicans 'Pee All Over Obama Every Day'
You've heard of Bill Moyers' Journal. Over the last two nights, Hardball could be titled Chris Matthews' Urinal. Suddenly, Chris is grossing viewers out with "pee" metaphors.

8. Lefty Rachel Maddow to Host MSNBC Special Linking Timothy McVeigh to 'Today's Anti-government Extremists'
Liberal MSNBC host Rachel Maddow will anchor an April 19 retrospective on terrorist Timothy McVeigh and whether his murder of 168 people could be linked to "today's anti-government extremists."

Doug Tallman: Republicans licking chops at O'Malley-Ehrlich rematch

I have always liked Doug Tallman’s work – and I especially like when a writer does his homework and gives me the numbers:

Republicans licking chops at O'Malley-Ehrlich rematch

But former governor's No. 1 hurdle could be mathematics

by Douglas Tallman Staff Writer Friday, April 2, 2010

http://www.gazette.net/stories/04022010/polinew194357_32549.php

ANNAPOLIS — For Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., November will be all about the math.

The putative Republican gubernatorial nominee has to either convert about 30 percent of Democratic voters to select the minority party. Or, he has to ensure a high turnout with seven of 10 occasional voters casting ballots for Ehrlich.

Those are the views of political observers contemplating this year's governor's race now that Ehrlich has announced he wants his old job back.

"I think the key for Ehrlich is being able to replicate the one thing he did in 2002, and that one thing is that he got 30 percent of the Democratic vote on Election Day," said Patrick Gonzales, president of Gonzales Research & Marketing Strategies of Annapolis.

Of Maryland's 3.4 million registered voters, more than 1.9 million — or 57 percent — are Democrats. The 902,000 Republicans account for 27 percent, while 479,000 unaffiliated voters represent about 14 percent.

"He can get 100 percent of independents, 100 percent of the Republicans, and if he only gets 15 percent of the Democrats, he loses," Gonzales said.

But the hitch to basing the campaign on snagging Democrats is money, said Donald Murphy, a lobbyist and former Republican lawmaker. It would take a lot of expensive advertising to convince a Democrat to vote Republican.

Instead, the campaign would need to go after "occasional" voters — voters who usually avoid midterm elections.

"People who are pissed and don't vote in those midterm elections are coming out this time," Murphy said. They'll be more likely to vote Republican because the party is not in power, and Ehrlich might be able to draw 70 percent of them, he said.

"What they need to do is initiate a ground game like Republicans have never seen before, and use the infrastructure of these tea parties and so forth and motivate people to come to vote," Murphy said.

NewsMax: Candidate Obama Slammed Offshore Oil Drilling

Many are so surprised to learn that Newsmax is reporting, "Candidate Obama Slammed Offshore Oil Drilling"

Shocked, I tell ya:

President Barack Obama’s decision to lift the ban on offshore oil drilling along parts of the U.S. coastline marks a sharp turnaround from the position he took during his presidential campaign.

In a statement issued on June 17, 2008, Obama attacked his Republican opponent John McCain for his call to open the nation’s coastline for oil exploration and drilling. He also charged that McCain had flip-flopped on his support of a moratorium on drilling he expressed in 2000.

"John McCain's support of the moratorium on offshore drilling during his first presidential campaign was certainly laudable, but his decision to completely change his position and tell a group of Houston oil executives exactly what they wanted to hear today was the same Washington politics that has prevented us from achieving energy independence for decades," Obama said.

"It's another example of short-term political posturing from Washington, not the long-term leadership we need to solve our dependence on oil.”

Obama also said offshore drilling would not produce any oil for at least a decade, and the effect on gasoline prices would be negligible.

Three days later, Obama said during a campaign stop in Jacksonville, Fla., according to the St. Petersburg Times: “The politics may have changed, but the facts haven’t. Offshore drilling would not lower gas prices today. It would not lower gas prices tomorrow. It would not lower gas prices this year. It would not lower gas prices five years from now.”

Nevertheless, on Wednesday Obama announced a five-year plan that includes opening up waters along portions of the U.S. mainland and Alaska for oil exploration.

“Given our energy needs, in order to sustain economic growth and produce jobs, and keep our businesses competitive, we are going to need to harness traditional sources of fuel even as we ramp up production of new sources of renewable, homegrown energy,” he said.

“So today we’re announcing the expansion of offshore oil and gas exploration.”

Arts Center to host “Rejected to Perfected: Fine Art from Recyclables”

“Rejected to Perfected: Fine Art from Recyclables”

Carroll County Arts Center MEDIA RELEASE March 31, 2010

The Carroll Arts Center is pleased to jump on the “go-green” bandwagon for its next exhibit. “Rejected to Perfected: Fine Art from Recyclables,” will be on view in the Tevis Gallery from June 10 through August 6.

Western Civilizations’ throw-away society had its beginnings in the Italian Renaissance when Humanist writers espoused facts that Mother Nature would constantly replenish her resources. The early 20th century Italian Futurist painter, Marinetti, wrote a manifest to the movement that applauded industrial pollution as proof that mankind was moving forward in a positive direction.

Enter the 21st century and industrialized nations are looking back, not to the Italian Renaissance or industry but to those countries, while appearing primitive, have been practicing sustainable living.

“Rejected to Perfected” will feature artists whose canvas and media are not purchased at the art store, whose pigment will not pollute water sources but bring awareness to the beauty and functionality that can be found in the landfill, recycle bins and dumpsters. These creative artists think out of the box. “Renew-Reuse-Recycle” is their artistic credo.

In addition, there will be a few other twists such as displaying the incredible bottle cap sculpture of “Starry Night” on loan from Finksburg Public Library, and we will be selling copies of “Do Martians Recycle” by Sharon Gribbon-Lindemon. The show has been generously sponsored by The Maryland Sustainable Living Fair.

Artists included in the show are:

Kevin Dayhoff, Westminster, MD. Kevin creates mixed media collages and sculptural forms using found objects and recycling paper, magazines and newspaper.

Heather Hodge, Westminster, MD: Her repurposed creations have delighted Festival of Wreaths visitors. She has some surprises in store for this show.

Joy Miller, Port Deposit, MD: Joy transforms car and truck hoods and gas tanks into garden furniture. She adorns old windows with fused glass and considers the landfill as her answer to the commercial craft store.

Roger Miller, Taneytown, MD: Roger’s extraordinary “windmill wreath” was a crowd favorite during our recent Festival of Wreaths and we eagerly await his sculptural additions to this exhibits.

Beverly Reidinger, Myersville, MD: Beverly garnered awards with her recycled refrigerator doors at the National Building Museum in D.C.

Virginia Sperry, Eldersburg: Virginia has been using car parts such as water pumps and adorning them with polymer clay to create something very feminine and delicate. She will also exhibit her newest art form, posing the rejected object in a composition and creating photographs that give recyclables artistic dignity.

The Trashy Women Collective, Perryville, MD. This eclectic group creates everything from sculptural forms to wearables.

The public is invited to meet the artists at a celebration on Friday, June 18, 6:30-7:30 pm. Immediately following the reception will be a screening of the movie “Walden: The Ballad of Thoreau,” a lovely documentary chronicling Thoreau’s last few days at Walden Pond. Admission for the movie is $5.

The Carroll Arts Center is located at 91 West Main Street in downtown Westminster. Gallery admission is free. Hours are 10 am – 4 pm Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 8 pm on Thursdays. For more information, call 410/848-7272 or visit www.CarrollCountyArtsCouncil.org

The Carroll County branch of the NAACP has announced that Chief Judge Bell will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming annual Freedom Fund banquet to be held April 9.

In 1996, Bell became the only active judge in the State to have served at least four years on all four levels of Maryland’s judiciary, and the first African-American to be named the state’s chief jurist.

Bell began his long career as an attorney with the law firm Piper and Marbury. He was first appointed to the bench in 1975 as a judge of the District Court of Maryland for Baltimore City, according to information from his office.

He next served as a judge for the Circuit Court for Baltimore City from 1980 until 1984. In that year, he was appointed judge to the Court of Special Appeals of Maryland and in 1991, Bell was appointed to the Court of Appeals of Maryland.

On October 23, 1996 then-Maryland Governor Parris Glendening, appointed him to the state’s highest court, Judge of the Court of Appeals.

Bell, who in his current role manages over 3,000 employees, and oversees the Maryland court system, lectures frequently at schools and community groups.

He was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina on July 6, 1943 grew-up in Baltimore where he attended Dunbar High School.

In 1960, twelve Dunbar High School students entered a downtown Baltimore restaurant, were refused service and subsequently arrested and convicted for trespassing.

One of those students was a young Bell, who led an appeal of the verdict in a landmark civil rights case, Bell v. Maryland, which was eventually argued before the United States Supreme Court and brought an end to de facto racial segregation in Maryland.

Bell continued his education at Morgan State College, where he received his A.B. degree in 1966. He went on to Harvard University Law School where he received his J.D. in 1969.

The annual banquet will be held this year at Martin's Westminster on Friday, April 9, 2010, beginning 6:30 pm. Tickets for the banquet are $45.00. Senator Nancy Jacobs: Please continue to help us pass Jessica's Law in MD

Senator Nancy Jacobs: Please continue to help us pass Jessica's Law in MD

Senator Nancy Jacobs, District 34, Maryland, Harford and Cecil Counties, NancyJacobs.com

April 3, 2010

Senator Jacobs with Mark Lunsford at the recent hearings.

I know that you agree that as a state we cannot afford to be lenient on child rapists. I strongly believe our children are our most precious asset and each day of delay in passing tougher child sexual predator laws puts more Maryland children at risk.

But the good news is that our battle for tougher child sexual predator laws crossed another hurdle this week when Senate Bill 622 "Crimes--Sexual Offenses Against Children--Penalties" passed the Senate on 2nd reader on Friday (2nd reader is where other Senators may offer amendments and ask questions. 3rd reader is the final vote which will be early next week.

In case you forgot, SB622 increases the mandatory minimum sentence from 5 to 20 years for child sexual predators 18 years or older convicted of a second degree rape or second degree sex offense against a victim younger than the age of 13.

While we may have won this battle, the war is far from over. SB622 faces a series of more hurdles until it goes to the governor for his signature to become law. The next step when SB622 clears the Senate is that it will go the House of Delegates' Judiciary Committee. The Judiciary Committee previously passed a weaker version of this bill which called for a 15 year mandatory minimum. We will need your help in asking members of the House committee to support the full 20 year mandatory minimum sentence for rape.

Please Contact the Committee

  • You can contact (via e-mail and phone call) members of the House Judiciary Committee by clicking on their name at this link: http://www.msa.md.gov/msa/mdmanual/06hse/html/com/05jud.html
  • Your message to the House Judiciary Committee Chairman and committee members should be:
"Please pass SB 622 with the full 20 year mandatory minimum sentence for the rape of a child."

Watch the story on Fox 45 Baltimore

Our children who were raped were never given a choice, but as legislators we do have a choice to make our children, families and communities safer. I appreciate all of your efforts to date and your support of my legislation.

In this blessed weekend, I wish you and your family a safe holiday.

Sincerely,

Nancy Jacobs
Senate Minority Whip – District 34 (Harford and Cecil County)

FAA: Pilots can take antidepressants

FAA: Pilots can take antidepressants

Apr 2, 2010

http://www.publicradio.org/columns/marketplace/business-news-briefs/2010/04/faa_pilots.html

The Federal Aviation Administration is set to begin a new policy Monday that will allow some pilots to take antidepressants. The FAA says the policy will improve safety by encouraging pilots who ignore symptoms of depression, or lie about their depression to keep from losing their licenses, to come forward. A six-month amnesty period will also begin for pilots who use antidepressants to come forward without punishment.

From the AP:

Under the new policy, pilots who take one of four antidepressants — Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa or Lexapro or their generic equivalents — will be allowed to fly if they have been successfully treated by those medications for a year without side effects that could pose a safety hazard in the cockpit. The antidepressants are classified as SSRIs, which help regulate mood.

Maryland Senate GOP Slate: Offshore Drilling Now Part of MD's Energy Plan

Offshore Drilling Now Part of MD's Energy Plan

Maryland Senate GOP Slate's Notes

In a classic “but I was against it before I was for it” moment, Governor Martin O’Malley stood with President Barack Obama in support of the decision to open the mid-Atlantic region to offshore drilling.
Maryland's environmental community is steamed. Offshore drilling off the coasts of Maryland and Virginia has been a long-standing bugaboo for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and related organizations.

In a scorching press release, CBF President Will Baker said: "Offshore drilling creates a new pollution source, one capable of significant, even devastating environmental damage from drilling, transportation, storage, or refinement. Taken together, the totality of the potential harm is too great a risk for the Chesapeake Bay, which EPA already officially lists as impaired." To see the full press release: http://www.cbf.org/Page.aspx?pid=1751

According to the Washington Post, the O’Malley spin machine began to backtrack immediately after the appearance with Obama. Oh, O’Malley only knew a few hours ahead of the press conference what the topic was. Oh, even though O’Malley stood with Obama, his real position is “neutral.” For more on the backtracking, see John Wagner’s report in First Click, Maryland: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/annapolis/2010/04/first_click_maryland_--_1.html

In January, the Maryland League of Conservation Voters gave O’Malley a 2010 endorsement even before they knew who the candidates would be in the primary and general elections. Perhaps they learned a lesson and will refrain from early endorsements in the future? Or perhaps not?

Justin Ready for Delegate: Unacceptable

Justin Ready for Delegate: Unacceptable

Justin Ready for Delegate's Notes

Below is a press release from the House Republican Caucus with statements from Minority Leader Tony O'Donnell and Minority Whip Chris Shank. The Democrats in Annapolis have an insatiable appetite for spending and raising taxes. I applaud the House Republicans for trying to amend the budget to insure that there would be no new taxes over the next four years. As a signer of the "No New Taxes" Pledge, I have promised the voters of District 5A that I will reject any attempts to increase the tax burden as their Delegate. My goal is to to lessen the state's crushing tax ball and chain by any means necessary.

Governor Ehrlich's entry into the race against Martin O'Malley underscores our need for strong, energetic conservative leaders who will stand up for families, small businesses, and retirees who are being persecuted and often, have to leave Maryland to make ends meet. You can count on me to join great conservatives like Del. O'Donnell and Del. Shank in the fight.

Justin

House Republican Caucus:

House Democrats Vote to Support Tax Increases

ANNAPOLIS – House Democrats today made their appetite for future tax increases very clear.

House Minority Whip Christopher Shank offered an amendment to the Budget Reconciliation and Financing Act (SB 141) that would have expressed the intent of the General Assembly not to raise, expand, or create new taxes over the next four years. This amendment was offered after a series of Republican-sponsored amendments to reduce the budget and eliminate the structural deficit were rejected.

“It is clear from the debate on the budget and rejection of our amendments that there is no political will in the General Assembly to truly reduce spending,” said Minority Leader Anthony J. O’Donnell. “Our budget analysts have told us that we are at the bottom of the barrel and there are no more funds to raid. If spending is not truly reduced, taxes are the Democrats’ only option.”

“It is time to level with the citizens of Maryland,” said Delegate Christopher Shank. “While tax increases will not be pursued this year, rejecting this amendment makes it clear that the Democrats in the General Assembly plan to raise taxes after the election - just as we saw in 2007.”

The amendment was rejected 39-94.
