Alcoholic Energy Drink Four Loko is Latest College Buzz

Updated: Wednesday, 27 Oct 2010
(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - Four Loko is an alcoholic energy drink made by Phusion Projects. It is named after its four primary ingredients: caffeine, alcohol, taurine and guarana. It comes in several flavors, including orange blend, grape, lemonade, watermelon, blue raspberry, and lemon lime.
According to ABC News , a single can of Four Loko contains as much as much caffeine as five cups of coffee, and the alcohol equivalent of six bottles of beer.
As Time noted any alcohol in the body functions the same way, but adding caffeine to the mix could cause users not to realize how much they are affected by the booze.
Danger can result in one drinking more than they would if they could feel the effects of alcohol. Also, when the caffeine effects wear off, the full weight of the alcohol is felt, which can be quite dangerous in and of itself.
Four Loko is not the only youth-marketed drink that combines alcohol and caffeine... http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpps/news/four-loko-is-latest-college-buzz-dpgoh-20101027-fc_10308820

Police Department
Halloween will be celebrated on Sunday, October 31st
from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.

With Halloween approaching, our children will soon be on our roads trick or treating, some with parental supervision and some without.  Halloween falls on Sunday night.

With this in mind, I would like to share some preventative measures with you to help make a fun outing a safe one for all.

·       Give and accept wrapped or packaged candy only

·       Adults should accompany young children

·       Be prepared by carrying a flashlight

·       Stay within the neighborhood and only visit homes you know

·       Watch for traffic

·       Make sure your child can see clearly through his or hers facemask; use cosmetics to create fun or scary faces.

·       Wear light-colored clothing short enough to prevent tripping; add reflective tape to the sides, front and back of costume.

·       Avoid hard plastic or wood props such as daggers or swords; substitute with foam rubber that is soft and flexible.

·       Keep costumed children away from pets.  The pet may not recognize the child and become frightened

·       Examine all candy before allowing your child to consume it

We want everyone, children and adults alike, to have a safe and happy Halloween.

Gazette:The case for Ehrlich by Blair Lee

Friday, Oct. 22, 2010
The case for Ehrlich
My Maryland | Blair Lee

Maryland's governor's race is not about jobs (governors don't create jobs; healthy economies do).

Nor is it about slots, BGE rates, charter schools or the tuition freeze (a political hoax).

Nor is it about illegal immigration (O'Malley calls them "new Americans," Ehrlich calls them "illegals"), gay marriage (O'Malley is for, Ehrlich is against), the death penalty (O'Malley is against, Ehrlich is for) or tort reform (O'Malley is against, Ehrlich is for).

Nor is it about attack ads, phony ballots, sending a message to Obama or The Washington Post's daily hatchet job on Ehrlich (just compare this week's bios on O'Malley and Ehrlich. My God, how blatantly biased can a newspaper be?).

On a single day, every four years, we citizens get to touch the ship of state's steering wheel. We set the ship's future course by electing the captain and crew. On that single day we govern them; the rest of the time they govern us.

Our big chance is on Nov. 2, Election Day, when we irrevocably determine Maryland's fiscal fate by picking the people who will manage the state's budget crisis…http://www.gazette.net/stories/10222010/polilee165421_32541.php

DAYHOFF: Vote against local hunger by bringing canned goods to the polls

DAYHOFF: Vote against local hunger by bringing canned goods to the polls

EAGLE ARCHIVE

By Kevin Dayhoff

... on Nov. 2, along with your vote, please bring along a can of beans, or soup -- or even marinated asparagus spears -- to take along with you to the polls.

This election, Carroll County is going to continue a unique tradition started with the November 2008 election.
It's a humanitarian effort of neighbor helping neighbor that, to the best of my knowledge, is a one-of-a-kind initiative in the nation.
One of the things that make Carroll County special is that no matter how many changes occur over the years, we always maintain our priorities by looking out for one another.
This year, Martin Radinsky, Frank Baylor, Kelly Buie, Bob Mitchell, David and Laura O'Callaghan have again organized the Election Day food drive to support Carroll County Food Sunday. Volunteers will beat polling places throughout the county to collect the nonperishable canned goods.
Last week, Radinsky said that in November 2008, Carroll County voters filled seven 150-cubic foot containers with donated food. In an interview with Radinsky back in 2008, he said he wanted "to build (the food collection effort) into a Carroll County habit for elections in the future."
