The Response from Ehrlich

In response to all the charges and counter-charges and revisionist history evident in this year’s Maryland gubernatorial contest, such as those suggested by a commenter on Blair Lee’s October 22, 2010 column, “A Case for Ehrlich,” I thought that perhaps voters may want to hear from Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich himself – May 27, 2010

“For example, a commenter responded to Mr. Lee’s column: “Blair Lee's case for Bob Ehrlich is full of holes. Bob Ehrlich is not the fiscally responsible choice. Instead of telling us how he would close next year's $1.1 billion budget gap, Bob Ehrlich made campaign promises that would nearly double that gap, including a promise he can't keep to roll back the sales tax.

“And Bob Ehrlich's gubernatorial record contradicts everything Blair Lee says. In easier economic times:

“Bob Ehrlich proposed the largest annual spending increase in Maryland history

“Bob Ehrlich accepted federal bailout dollars with strings attached

“Bob Ehrlich transfered funds and floated bonds to cover budget deficits (see pg. 7)

“Bob Ehrlich raised taxes $3 billion, including a 57% property tax hike and sneaky income tax increases

- Steve Lebowitz, Annapolis”

Many of us cannot wait for this ugly election to be over. For those of us who were actually there or personally witnessed many of the events and decisions that are being characterized or mischaracterized out of context, we are in total disbelief that voters may be left with such inaccurate information as a result of negative campaigning, in order to make a decision on November 2, 2010 as to whom should lead the state of Maryland for the next four years.

The case for Ehrlich

Maryland's governor's race is not about jobs (governors don't create jobs; healthy economies do).

Nor is it about slots, BGE rates, charter schools or the tuition freeze (a political hoax).

Nor is it about illegal immigration (O'Malley calls them "new Americans," Ehrlich calls them "illegals"), gay marriage (O'Malley is for, Ehrlich is against), the death penalty (O'Malley is against, Ehrlich is for) or tort reform (O'Malley is against, Ehrlich is for).

Nor is it about attack ads, phony ballots, sending a message to Obama or The Washington Post's daily hatchet job on Ehrlich (just compare this week's bios on O'Malley and Ehrlich. My God, how blatantly biased can a newspaper be?).

On a single day, every four years, we citizens get to touch the ship of state's steering wheel. We set the ship's future course by electing the captain and crew. On that single day we govern them; the rest of the time they govern us.

[Editor’s note: Ya know, ya can’t make this stuff up. Of course, we all went to college and observed folks behaving in a bizarre manner. It’s called youthful indiscretions. And we have all been amazed to find out years later that many of these same individuals are now the captains of industry, lawyers, doctors, judges and Indian chiefs. Go figure…]

Last week Ben Smith at Politico did a story about some material that's been dug up about Rand Paul's college pseudo-fraternity, the "NoZe Brotherhood" - I have a few things to add to the same story today.

First, some background. The "NoZe" was like a fifth-rate Southern wannabe version of George Bush and John Kerry's secret "Skull and Bones" society, a group of wiseass kids from Baylor University (from whence Paul, incidentally, never graduated before heading off to medical school) who got together and smoked herb, pulled dumb pranks and published a very strange newsletter.

Here's the thing about this stuff: though we know for sure that Paul was a member of the NoZe during the time period in question, Paul's name isn't on any of these articles. Paul's camp isn't commenting on any of these pieces, which is not surprising (though what is mildly surprising is that he has yet to deny the essential facts in the "Aqua Buddha" story). None of this proves that Paul is a racist, or that he hates Christians. But it does prove that in his college years, Rand Paul chose to spend his time with a lot of really stupid and unfunny people. There are a lot of things to criticize about Rand Paul, and a lot of liberal critics have focused on his far-out views on the Civil Rights Act and pegged him as a closet racist, but to me that's not the key with this guy. Far more important is that he just seems like an overgrown adolescent and a dick.

One reporter I talked to in Kentucky put it this way: "He's just the prototypical spoiled college douchebag," the reporter said. "He's every rich kid you knew in college who read The Fountainhead once and loved the idea that sharing is immoral."

The hokey comments in The Rope are one thing, but the sneering, intellectually superior tone of Paul's society-brother newsletter is the one thing that to me seems still relevant to Paul's campaign. If you follow Paul enough and go to enough of his events, you won't be able to miss how much smarter he thinks he is than everyone else; he puts even Al Gore to shame in this department. If you ask him to explain some of his old comments, or something from his father's old libertarian newsletters, as I did, he's liable to roll his eyes at you. He apparently finds the whole answering questions and explaining himself thing very tiresome, and seems put out that he even has to bother with it en route to the Senate. Carroll Community College Recognizes Students at Adult Education Ceremony

Westminster, Md., - Twenty students in the Adult Education program operated by Carroll Community College (Carroll) will participate in a recognition ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Theater in the Scott Center. This is the third annual ceremony to recognize adults who have completed General Education (GED), National External Diploma Programs (NEDP), and earned their high school diplomas.

College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo and Board of Trustees Chair Barbara Biller will also offer congratulatory remarks. Family and friends of students have been invited to attend the ceremony.

Two student speakers will share their experiences in the program and discuss the importance of receiving their high school diplomas. Peggy Blizzard of Westminster received her diploma in December, 2009 upon passing the GED tests. Blizzard is the mother of five children and is currently enrolled as a full-time student Carroll Community College. Denise Miskimon of Manchester completed the National External Diploma Program in September 2010. Since receiving her diploma, she has begun working at Carroll Hospital Center.

“I am pleased to recognize the students who have completed the adult education program successfully,” said College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo. “I expect great things from them in the future and offer the moral support of the college as they move forward.”

"It is so special to have the opportunity to publicly recognize the achievements of our graduates at this event," said Becki Maurio, director of the Adult Education Program. “This celebration represents the culmination of the hard work and sacrifice of graduates in their commitment to making a better future for themselves and their families.”

Last Tuesday, after two years, 45 debates and $2.4 billion spent, American voters finally had their day. Is it just me, or does $2.5 billion seem an obscene amount of money for a country to spend on politics?

Nonetheless, I recently read an article in the London Sunday Times which stated: "This may seem a lot, but Americans annually spend $8 billion on hair care products, $64 billion on soft drinks ... so $2.4 billion isn't too much to pick the leader of the free world."

In Carroll County, it was good to see that we maintained our proper priorities with the idea of having an Election Day food drive to support Carroll County Food Sunday.

By late afternoon, when I checked with Marty Radinsky and Frank Baylor, Carroll Countians had generously donated five huge 150 cubic foot containers of food for the needy.

Radinsky said he hopes "to build (the food collection effort) into a Carroll County habit for elections in the future."

Everglades Foundation Releases Economic Study Detailing Financial Return on Investment From Restoring America’s Everglades

First-of-its-Kind Economic Study on Everglades Restoration Highlights Projected Rise in Job Creation, Real Estate Values Among Other Benefits

Palmetto Bay, Fla.—(Oct. 18, 2010)— Today, the Everglades Foundation released the results of a comprehensive analysis of the financial return on investment generated by restoration of America’s Everglades ecosystem.

The study, conducted by Mather Economics, projects that restoration will produce an increase in economic benefits of approximately $46.5 billion that could range up to $123.9 billion based on an investment of $11.5 billion.

"It is clear that Everglades restoration not only produces ecological benefits, but also generates a robust economic boost to our economy. For every dollar spent on Everglades restoration, we are getting four dollars back in the form of higher home values, increased tourism and stronger fishing, boating and tourism industries," said Kirk Fordham, CEO, Everglades Foundation. "When we invest in protecting and restoring the Everglades, we are also revving up a powerful job creation engine. Aside from the good paying jobs in construction, engineering and the sciences that come with restoration projects, we are boosting employment in a wide range of industries."

The study shows that for every one dollar spent on Everglades restoration as part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), $4.04 will be generated in economic benefits. Projections indicate that there will be an incremental impact on employment of about 442,644 additional jobs over 50 years. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also estimates there will be 22,966 new short- to mid-term jobs created as a result of actual restoration projects.

“Let’s think about the basic ecosystem services provided by the Everglades as a grocery store featuring ‘products’ ranging from water purification to enhanced tourism. We created six distinct aisles or divisions and a catch-all section. For each of these categories, we conservatively estimated, using best available data and economic methods, the increase in economic value of a restored Everglades ecosystem,” said Bobby McCormick, Ph.D., Mather Economics’ principal investigator assigned to the project. “The bottom line, as our analysis strongly suggests, is that the rewards of restoration far outweigh the economic costs.”

In addition, the study shows that Everglades restoration will result in added value to the economy of $5,129 per individual residing in the 16-county South Florida Water Management District.

"Too often, we hear arguments that we can't afford to invest in Everglades restoration during an economic downturn. Instead, smart policymakers recognize that the future of our state's economic growth depends on protecting the Everglades and the water supply it provides to one in three Floridians. Simply put: we can't grow our economy if we allow the Everglades to collapse," said Fordham.

Halloween: Gist worried about being forgotten, but not quite gone

“Gist worried about being forgotten, but not quite gone” is one of my favorite Halloween stories among many. I wrote it for the Sunday Eagle, under the working title of “Ghost Stories in Carroll County.” It was published in the newspaper on October 28^th, 2007.

Of the horror stories of Carroll’s yesteryear, none was greater than the very real fear of being buried alive. In today’s world, society’s collective faith in the modern advances of the medical arts has gone a long way in alleviating the fear of being buried alive; a fear which was rampant in the 1800s.

A few years ago, local historian Jay Graybeal retold an account by Ruth Gist Pickens about the fear of being buried alive held by one of Carroll County’s most prominent citizens in the 1700s, Colonel Joshua Gist.

It seems that Colonel Gist maintained a coffin in a portion of his bedroom for the last years of his life; “into which he would have his personal servant lay him out and then call the family to comment on his appearance. Carroll County has three questions on the ballot this coming November 2, 2010

For the many folks who have asked:

Carroll County has three questions on the ballot this coming November 2, 2010:

• Should Maryland have a convention to change its constitution?

• Should Baltimore City’s orphans’ court judges be required to be lawyers?

• Should jury trials be allowed only in civil cases when the amount in question is more than $15,000, instead of more than $10,000, the current minimum?

Yes, the orphans’ court question pertains only to Baltimore City; however, it is being put before the voters statewide vote because it proposes a change to the state constitution… The jury trial question also is a constitutional amendment.
