December 8, 1922: Be Careful In Gathering Your Christmas Greens - Democratic Advocate

Be Careful In Gathering Your Christmas Greens

This is the season of the year when property owners, especially along the highways, should exercise the utmost vigilance in protecting their evergreens, holly, running pine, laurel and the like.

The gathering of Christmas greens became such a serious matter, because of vandalism practiced, that the Legislature of 1918 enacted a special law covering the subject.

This law makes it a misdemeanor, with a fine of $25.00 or 90 days imprisonment, or both, to remove, injure, or destroy any trees or shrubs, without the written consent of the owner, or except under his personal direction.

The State Board of Forestry is cooperating with land owners in the enforcement of this law, and will be glad to furnish, without charge, suitable posters for the protection of property to any who may desire them.

Politico: Christmas tree tax tabled by Obama

On Tuesday, the administration gave the evergreen light for a new fee of 15 cents on all Christmas trees. But after a day of media attention and widespread criticism, the Obama administration confirmed to POLITICO that they were looking to delay the implementation of the fee.

“USDA is going to delay implementation and revisit this action,” said Matt Lehrich, a White House spokesman, while denying that the fee was a tax.
“I can tell you unequivocally that the Obama Administration is not taxing Christmas trees. What’s being talked about here is an industry group deciding to impose fees on itself to fund a promotional campaign, similar to how the dairy producers have created the “Got Milk?” campaign,” Lehrich said.
The new tax was meant to raise funds for an advertising campaign promoting the benefits of live trees, as opposed to artificial ones. The tax was expected to raise approximately $2 million, according to McClatchy News.
Conservatives had been in an uproar about the new tax.
“Does anyone in America - anyone? - believe that Christmas trees have a bad image that needs taxpayer-subsidized improvement?” wrote Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) on his blog Wednesday. “All I want for Christmas is a free market.” ...  Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1111/67933.html

With Thanksgiving now upon us it’s time to start thinking about the upcoming holiday season. “O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! How lovely are your branches!”

Nothing is more festive than having a real Christmas tree to decorate your home.

Fortunately, Carroll County is home to numerous Christmas tree farms opening their doors the day after Thanksgiving to welcome the holiday season.

Many farms also offer handmade wreaths, swags, roping, greens, pre-cut trees and live balled and burlap trees. The scent of a fresh-cut tree adds a distinctive aroma to the home during the holidays and trees are 100% recyclable.

Tree types available from Carroll County farms include Blue Spruce, Canaan Fir, Concolor Fir, Douglas Fir, Fraser Fir, Norway Spruce, White Pine, Scotch Pine, Serbian Spruce, Bosnian Pine and Balsam Fir. Various sizes are offered including cathedral height trees.

Many farms provide saws, tree shaking and baling, food and drink and other family-oriented activities.

Grab your warm clothes, boots, gloves and hats and venture to a Carroll County Christmas tree farm this holiday season. Tree farms open in November and continue through Christmas. Please check listings for specific times.

The brochure “Christmas Trees and Holiday Greens in Carroll County, Maryland 2008” is now available online at
