America's streets are in terrible shape. And I'm not talking
about potholes, busted curbs or blinky street lights.
No, the problem is that so many of our streets are really
mean. This meanness is sweeping the country and spreading to foreign lands.
I made this discovery recently after hearing a TV war
correspondent refer to snipers shooting people on "the mean streets of
Sarajevo."
It seemed to me that I had read or heard the phrase
"mean streets" before.
Using a computer service, I searched for the words
"mean streets" in dozens of newspapers.
The search covered only the first five months of this year.
But the results were frightening. Here are just a few of the mean streets that
were found.

Introducing 'AnonyWatch': Tracking Nameless Quotations in The Times
Introducing 'AnonyWatch': Tracking Nameless Quotations in The Times (NYT / Public Editor's Journal)
New York Times columnist Margaret Sullivan launched an effort Tuesday to point out some of the more regrettable examples of anonymous quotations in the Times. Mediaite An initial example of the pervasive phenomenon is Ginia Bellafante's column about Mayor Bill de Blasio's trip to Albany in which a "Democratic insider" says the mayor thinks he and the New York governor are friends "but Andrew Cuomo doesn't really have friends." FishbowlNY
Another article Sullivan called out was even worse. In a piece on the Malaysian Airlines plane, an anonymous quote was issued on an anonymously sourced theory that someone on the plane made abrupt shifts in altitude to "depressurize the cabin and render the passengers and crew unconscious."

LA Times Fires Reporter for Inappropriate Relationship And Big Error (LA Times)
Hat Tip: Mediabistro's Morning Media Newsfeed
The Los Angeles Times dismissed an investigative reporter
Friday after discovering he had an inappropriate relationship with someone who
was a source for a front-page story that the newspaper says contained an error.
The editor's note read, "A front-page article in the
Los Angeles Times on Dec. 7, 2013, was incorrect in reporting that Occidental
College failed to disclose 27 alleged sexual assaults that occurred in
2012."
Separately, as they began looking into the complaint, Times
editors learned from the author of the articles, staff writer Jason Felch, that
he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with someone who was a source
for the Dec. 7 story and others.
Poynter / MediaWire The college approached the paper for a
correction and the Times reviewed documents showing the 27 cases did not fall
under the disclosure requirement, the paper said. Some were sexual harassment
cases or inappropriate text messages, which are not covered by the act.
The Los Angeles Times fired
investigative reporter Jason Felch after he disclosed he had “engaged in an
inappropriate relationship” with someone who was a source for a Dec.
7 story on Occidental College’s handling of sexual assault allegations.
[…]
The Associated Press said Felch
issued a statement in which the reporter asserted the Dec. 7 story ran
weeks before the relationship began and that he stopped using the source during
their relationship.
While he issued a mea culpa: “I accept full responsibility
for what I did and regret the damage it has done to my family and my colleagues
at one of the nation’s great newspapers,” he also said he thought he was fired
for the appearance of a conflict of interest.
++++++++++++
NYT Felch was dismissed Friday, March 14. Felch, 40, said
by email on Sunday that Occidental had declined opportunities to comment on the
initial article before publication, or to make officials available to be
interviewed.
The first article was published before the relationship with
the source began, Felch said. He said he did not rely on the person, who was
not named by him or the newspaper, as a source after that. He did not describe
the nature of the relationship. He was fired, he said, "for creating the
appearance of a conflict of interest."

Panama City revival
American ex-pats help rebuild a once-decaying district of
the capital
By Eric Vohr, Special to Tribune Newspapers December 18,
2013
PANAMA CITY — This Central American nation is fast becoming
a prime destination for winter travelers looking to trade cold and slush for
sun and surf. But this country's riches are found not only in its tropical
jungles and white sand beaches; one of Panama's hottest new destinations is
right in the heart of the capital's historic district.
Founded in the 17th century, Panama City's colonial district
of Casco Viejo once was the hub of Panamanian culture and civilization. Jutting
into the Gulf of Panama on the Pacific side, the district sits on a peninsula
chosen for defense against pirates. Casco later fell into neglect as the modern
city center sprouted its skyscrapers across the bay.
But now Casco is experiencing a renaissance due in part to
the efforts of American expatriates. U.S. influence isn't unusual here; for
most of the 20th century, the United States held a corridor bisecting the
country along the Panama Canal… http://www.baltimoresun.com/travel/sc-trav-1217-panama-hot-spot-20131218,0,250641.story

People at CNBC Are Relieved That Maria Bartiromo Left by JOE
WEISENTHAL DEC. 5, 2013
The entire financial TV industry is in a state of flux.
The Wall Street Journal recently
reported on the dismal ratings at CNBC, Fox Business, and Bloomberg.
Bloomberg, meanwhile, is in the midst of some kind reassessment of its TV
business, and there's widespread apprehension there about what the next
direction is for the network.
And the big momentous event was the recent departure of
Maria Bartiromo from CNBC to Fox Business.
Bartiromo is the biggest star in financial TV history, and
her leaving the biggest network to go to a much smaller rival is a major
moment.
So what's the mood at CNBC following this departure?
One person who was at CNBC headquarters the day after
Bartiromo's departure actually described a widespread sense of
"relief."
It's not that Bartiromo was disliked. It's that CNBC, according to multiple
sources, is an insanely competitive place internally, Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/departure-of-maria-bartiromo-at-cnbc-frees-up-guests-2013-12?op=1

Yet Another Blow To American Journalism
June 12, 2013 By Kellia Ramares-Watson
Again the Profit Motive Prefers Cheap Over Craft
News Items: Chicago Sun-Times cuts entire photography staff. While the company, which has been trying to revive its profits, still will hire professional freelance photographers for coverage, it will increasingly rely on reporters to take photos and video to accompany their stories.
Chicago Sun-Times will train reporters on ‘iPhone photography basics’ … a memo from Editor Craig Newman: “In the coming days and weeks, we’ll be working with all editorial employees to train and outfit you as much as possible to produce the content we need.”
There are two major groups of repercussions to the Chicago story: What this means for journalism, especially photojournalism itself, and what this move says about the economy as a whole.

Rick Steves: Greece in Economic Crisis and Your Travel Dreams
Rick Steves checking out the impact of the economic crisis
in Greece
June 11, 2012 http://blog.ricksteves.com/?p=7675
Retrieved December 2, 2012
With all the news about Greece’s economic problems, people
are wondering whether it’s a good time to go there or not. I’ve surveyed my
Tour Department and our Greek guides who live and work in Greece, and here’s my
report…
My guides report that our Greece tours so far this spring
have been as smooth and fun as ever — virtually unaffected by the local
political and economic events
The big concern among the hotels and restaurants we use in
Greece is whether they’ll be able to survive the downturn in tourism as many
postpone their travels there, fearing “instability.” And many sights are
running on their shorter winter schedules for lack of money to staff the longer
summer hours.
… First and foremost, Greece is a safe place to visit. In
fact, it’s a good time to visit because you will be made especially welcome.
Tourism is Greece’s heavy industry and its leading employer.
It seems to me that US media coverage of Greece has been
nothing less than hysterical — just plain silly at times, and woefully lacking
in analysis. Greeks are emotional people, and they are given to outbursts of
anger — as well as outbursts of joy. Their bad governments in recent times have
given them plenty of reasons to be angry. The scenes in Syntagma, the big
square immediately in front of the Greek parliament building, are a symptom of
this — and act as a release valve. These scenes occur only when the parliament
is voting on the hated austerity measures. When you see riots on TV, they are
generally the work of a group of anarchists who are limited to Syntagma and
know how to get on the news.
The big debate politically is austerity (from the right)
versus no austerity (from the left). Until this all sorts itself out, I would
recommend that travelers do not wear “Angela Merkel” masks. Regardless of how
the debate turns out, and who emerges as the new government, Greeks of all
political stripes will take care of tourism, so vital to its struggling
economy. The Greeks, a welcoming people at any time, will be doubly
appreciative of any visitors in these difficult circumstances.
The main impact on travelers as Greece struggles through
this period will be: shorter hours of sights; intermittent strikes; and friends
and loved ones back home wondering if Americans traveling in Greece are okay… http://blog.ricksteves.com/?p=7675

"WaPo‘s flagship gossip column “The Reliable Source” isn’t exactly setting a good example these days. Sure, we know it’s loathsome to have to attribute to someone else.
But that’s the breaks and the way it goes if you want to be respected by your peers.
