Tom Zirpoli Carroll County Times: Survey shows snapshot of students

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

By Tom Zirpoli

The 2011 Almanac Issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education was published last month and I always enjoy reviewing the data. This latest report reviews 2009 and some 2010 data from colleges and universities across the United States.

About 17 million Americans attended college in 2009, a 38 percent increase over the past 10 years. About 10 million of these students attended four-year institutions and about 7 million were enrolled in two-year institutions… http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/news/opinion/columnists/tom-zirpoli-survey-shows-snapshot-of-students/article_f0c362e4-e906-11e0-940c-001cc4c03286.html

Tom Zirpoli: Interactions help teach diversity

Tom Zirpoli: Interactions help teach diversity

“As (Juan) Williams once stated during a more enlightened conversation, ‘Racism is a lazy man's substitute for using good judgment.’  And on that point, Williams is right on.”  - “Tom Zirpoli: Interactions help teach diversity”

I guess all minorities in America have their time in history when they are treated poorly by others because they are different. The events of 9/11 made it difficult for many American-Muslims because some Americans like to make generalizations about people they don't know.

Most generalizations about specific groups are not accurate, of course. For example, one of the many myths about undocumented immigrants is that they are the cause of crime in cities along the American-Mexican border. Not true, according to the FBI. Most cities on the American-Mexican border have significantly lower crime rates than most other American cities. But you can't beat a good crime story to build up fear of people who look different from us…  http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/news/opinion/columnists/article_11839ba6-fc8c-11df-ac15-001cc4c03286.html

Palin choice appeases right

Palin choice appeases right

By Tom Zirpoli, Carroll County Times Columnist Wednesday, September 03, 2008

I believe the selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin reinforces Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's argument that Sen. John McCain will govern like President Bush.

In selecting Palin, McCain continued the Bush doctrine of ideology over competence. If McCain thinks Palin is ready to be vice president of the United States, I'm frightened to see who he will pick to run FEMA.

My guess is that McCain wanted to pick someone he knew and trusted, like former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge or Sen. Joe Liberman. Both of these men would have attracted moderate and independent voters. But their selection would have upset the core conservative base of the Republican Party, and apparently McCain was not willing to go down that path.

Instead, he selected the governor of Alaska, who he hardly knows, but who has three primary qualifications: She is conservative, she is young and she is a she.
