Change and 'desire to compete' fuel Ehrlich 2010 bid http://tinyurl.com/26ygyac

The sign in Bob Ehrlich's corner office reads, "No Whining."

Four years after his only political loss, the Republican former governor has decided to rejoin the political fray, challenging his political nemesis, Gov. Martin O'Malley.

He announced his intention to run April 7 at a rally in his boyhood home of Arbutus. Since then, he has criss-crossed the state, most recently speaking at a GOP spring convention in Ocean City.

Just an election cycle ago, Ehrlich was telling listeners of his newly christened radio show that Maryland had changed.

Former Governor Ehrlich headlines Westminster Tax Day Tea Party in Westminster

Former Governor Ehrlich headlines Westminster Tax Day Tea Party in Westminster
Former-Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. came to Westminster Thursday evening and spoke for twenty-minutes to a spirited crowd of about 300.

Amedori to join the ticket of Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy, as his lieutenant governor running mate.

By Kevin Dayhoff

Billed as the Westminster Tax Day Tea Party, the parking lot at Legends Café, on Route 140 just outside the city limits was the scene of a sea of American and Gadsden, “Don’t Tread on Me,” yellow flags, protest and campaign signs, and political candidates.

The event, organized by “We the People,” was loud and animated, however there were no problems as folks with shirts marked “security” patrolled the crowds and the Carroll County Sheriff’s deputies observed carefully from afar.

As people mingled to music and conversation there were plenty of homemade signs extolling discontent over taxes, President Barack Obama, health care reform, government spending, the national debt and voting incumbents out of office.

At the same time, a line of about 50 Tea Partiers lined Route 140 and waved flags and signs as motorists drive by and added to the cacophony by honking their horns and shouting words of encouragement.

The chair of We the People, Joe Kirby, began warming-up the crowd just after Former-Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. arrived and spoke at some length about the purpose and intent of the rally and the Tea Party movement.

Michelle Jefferson, a Carroll County Commissioner candidate (R-District 3) introduced Ehrlich at 7 p.m.

“It drives me crazy how we are characterized,” lamented Ehrlich after greeting the crowd as he criticized how the Tea Party movement has been treated by the media.

Boos were heard as he noted comments by U.S. Senate President Harry Reid (D-NV) that the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, (D-CA) is from Maryland.

“This (movement) is about workers, taxpayers… It is not a populist movement,” said Ehrlich as he lapsed briefly into a history lesson of the 18th Century Populist movement in the U.S.

“This is organic. There is no leader of this movement. It just rose-up. This is about pro-wealth… I want to leave this country a better place… Government can be excellent. We’re not anti-government. We’re for appropriate government,” Ehrlich extolled.

“This is not about any particular party. This needs to be independent and it shouldn’t be connected to either party,” he continued as talked about the tea Party movement crossing party lines.

“There is a lot of anger out there…,” Ehrlich continued as he asked for a show of hands of the folks in the audience who had never been to a political function before. “We don’t call people names.”

As Ehrlich transitioned from exhorting the virtues of the Tea Parties, into campaigning for the Maryland governor’s office, he advised the crowd that “an Ehrlich bumper sticker increases the value of your car…”

After Ehrlich spoke for 20 minutes, it came time for a number of local candidates to take to the podium to talk with crowd.

One-by-one, folks such as Jefferson, Hampstead Mayor Haven Shoemaker, a newly announced Carroll Commissioner candidate (R-District 2,) Carroll Commissioner candidate, David Jones (R-District 4,) Maryland Delegate Tanya Shewell (R-District 5A,) Justin Ready, a candidate for Maryland delegate (R-District 5A,) took turns at the microphone.

Back in the crowd was also former Maryland Delegate (R-District 5A,) Carmen Amedori sporting her newly minted “Murphy – Amedori for Maryland (Governor)” signs.

It was earlier in the day that word got out that Amedori, who most recently served on the Maryland parole commission member until January, is abandoning her bid for the Republican nomination to oppose U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D) of Baltimore.

She had announced in February that she was going to run to unseat the four-term incumbent, Mikulski, by participating in a crowded Republican primary but recently changed her mind to join the ticket of Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy, as his lieutenant governor.

That latest development is certain to make the summer political season that much more interesting and will be announced in Annapolis on Friday, April 16, 2010, at 4:30 p.m. on Lawyers’ Mall in Annapolis.

After all the speakers had their moment at the podium, the crowd moved-out to join the line of sign and flag wavers along Route 140.

As the shadows grew long and the sun began to set on another April 15 tax filing deadline, the crowd slowly drifted way and began looking forward to a long political summer of discontent.

Dayhoff: Amedori to run for Maryland lieutenant governor

Carroll County resident Carmen Amedori to join the ticket of Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy, as his lieutenant governor running mate.

Today, at 4:30 p.m. on Lawyers’ Mall in Annapolis, Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy will hold a press conference to announce that former Maryland Delegate (R-District 5A, Carroll Co.) Carmen Amedori will join his ticket as his lieutenant governor running mate.

Brian will be joined by Jim Pelura, former Maryland GOP chairman; Charles Lollar, candidate for U.S. Congress; Jerry Walker, candidate for Anne Arundel County Council; and Eric Cary, candidate for State Senate, according to a Murphy campaign press release..

Amedori, who was present at last night’s Westminster Tax Day Tea Party, in the parking lot at Legends Café, on Route 140 was found in the back of the crowd sporting her newly minted “Murphy – Amedori for Maryland (Governor)” signs.

It was earlier on Thursday that word got out that Amedori, who most recently served on the Maryland parole commission member until January, is abandoning her bid for the Republican nomination to oppose U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D) of Baltimore.

She had been appointed to her position on the parole commission by then-Governor Ehrlich, who is now her opponent in the upcoming September 14, Maryland Republican primary.

The buzz at last night’s Tea Party was that Murphy is adding Amedori to the ticket to reach-out to conservative voters in the upcoming primary contest; although with so many Ehrlich supporters in the crowd, no one was willing to speak on the record.

Last night Amedori praised Murphy’s small business credentials noting that it was actually Ehrlich who has been on record as saying that it will take someone with a business background to beat incumbent Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley in this fall’s November general election.

Amedori had previously announced in February that she was going to run to unseat the four-term incumbent, Mikulski, by participating in a crowded Republican primary but recently changed her mind to join the ticket of Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy, as his lieutenant governor.

This latest development is certain to make the summer political season that much more interesting.

Darkness Rising: Joe Steffen's Rants and Raves: All The (Right/Wrong) Moves By Prince of Darkness

What candidates do early on in their respective campaigns does give a great indication about what may be expected down the road....

Brian Murphy will be announcing, likely tomorrow, that his Lieutenant Governor candidate is none other than former delegate and Ehrlich-picked Parole Commissioner, Carmen Amedori.

[...]
... as evidenced by this following exchange between former Ehrlich Cabinet Secretary and "If Ehrlich doesn't run," MD GOP Gubernatorial candidate, Larry Hogan in a recent Facebook exchange with me on lobbyist and former delegate Don Murphy's page. ...

A long time darling of the Right in the Maryland GOP, Amedori - who had been running for the U.S. Senate - brings both experience and bona fides to Mr. Murphy's ticket. In addition, she will bring a great number of the party ...

Carmen Amedori was conservative before conservative was cool, while it was cool, while it was on the outs – and, I’m sure, remains so now that it is in its ascendancy, at least nationwide.

AMEDORI: Incumbent Senator Is Out Of Touch

AMEDORI: Incumbent Senator Is Out Of Touch

(Westminster, MD) March 25, 2010 Carmen Amedori, Republican candidate for United States Senate in Maryland, states that the incumbent Senator's remark that "the Republican Party is from Mars" shows just how out of touch she is with the electorate.

“For Senator Mikulski to think the majority of citizens she represents are content with this health care bill shows she is uninformed. I continue to listen to the voices of Marylanders from the Allegany Mountains to the shores of Ocean City, and they are not happy campers,” Amedori said.

“She has been in office too long and her tangent of using examples of "Venus, Mars, and Earth" in comparison to the Democrat and Republican parties, should serve as a reminder to all voters that the four-term Senator may not have all voters' best interests in mind as she prepares to vote for Reconciliation to pass this bill.” said Amedori.

Amedori believes true reform would include tort reform, associated health plans along with pre-existing conditions. Additionally, Amedori does not agree with the robbing of $500 Billion from Medicare to supplement Medicaid.

"How in the world can Senator Mikulski turn her back on our senior citizens," Amedori lamented.

As Maryland's next U.S. Senator, Amedori will work to repeal and replace this unconstitutional legislation. “Mikulski has made it clear that she does not have the best intentions of all Marylanders at heart by voting among party lines and insulting the Republican voters," Amedori said.

Amedori is a former Maryland House Delegate where she served on the Judiciary Committee and quickly rose to the position of Assistant Minority Leader. She earned a distinguished reputation for being a fiscal conservative, a strong advocate for property rights, and a champion for small business. In 2004, Governor Robert Ehrlich honored Amedori by appointing her to the Maryland Parole Commission where she served until last year.

Amedori is a graduate of Stevenson University. Before entering public life, she was a paralegal and journalist for the Baltimore Sun. She is the proud mother of two adult daughters.

AMEDORI: Health Care Mandate is Act of radical progressivism

AMEDORI: Health Care Mandate is Act of radical progressivism

(Westminster, MD) March 21, 2010 Today, [posted on Soundtrack March 26, 2010] Carmen Amedori, Republican candidate for United States Senate in Maryland states the passing of the Health Care is not only a mandate we cannot afford but also one more step toward socialism by the Progressive liberals.

“By mandating people to buy health insurance, you are not driving down the costs. By having the Government run an industry that is 16% of our economy is just another step toward a socialist agenda. This is not reform. This is crippling free enterprise and personal choice of the individual.” said Amedori.

Amedori believes that a reform package must include tort reform, associated health plans, rules that allow people to purchase health insurance across state lines, and more emphasis on health savings accounts and allow people with pre-existing conditions to purchase insurance coverage.

Amedori says when elected the next U.S. Senator from Maryland she will work to repeal and replace this unconstitutional legislation. “It seems our Congress does not listen to the majority of Americans on this issue. This is nothing more than increase in government, taxes and millions of dollars in unfunded mandates.”

Amedori is a former Maryland House Delegate where she served on the Judiciary Committee and quickly rose to the position of Assistant Minority Leader. She earned a distinguished reputation for being tough on crime, a strong advocate for property rights, and a champion for small business. In 2004, Governor Robert Ehrlich honored Amedori by appointing her to the Maryland Parole Commission where she served until last year.

Amedori is a graduate of Stevenson University. Before entering public life, she was a paralegal and journalist for the Baltimore Sun. She is the proud mother of two daughters.

“It is time we do more for Maryland than our incumbent Senator,” added Amedori. “

Amedori Challenges Fellow Republican Candidates To Join Her Petition To Stop Reconciliation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 9, 2010

AMEDORI CHALLENGES FELLOW REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES TO JOIN HER PETITION TO STOP RECONCILIATION

(Westminster, MD) Today, Carmen Amedori, Republican candidate for United States Senate in Maryland, called upon her fellow Republican United States Senate candidates to join her online petition asking for Senator Barbara Mikulski to vote no on reconciliation for Obamacare.

“We need to present a united front on the most pressing issue confronting our state and country right now. And that issue is the forcing down our throats of health care reform. I ask my fellow Republican candidates to join with me on sending a message to the incumbent that she should vote no on reconciliation,” said Amedori.

Yesterday Amedori launched an online petition collecting names of people across the states who also want to encourage Mikulski to vote no on reconciliation. “I am pleased with the results so far, but we still need more people to join this effort. It will be close to impossible to turn the clock back if Obamacare is passed. Even with the House and Senate being controlled by Republicans in 2011, the President will still be able to veto any repeals. That’s why Marylanders need to have their voices heard now,” stated Amedori.

Reconciliation is not the method to pass health care reform. This parliamentary maneuver has never been used for such a sweeping piece of legislation,” said Amedori. “The President’s plan for health care reform is seriously flawed. That’s why no one elected Republican Senator will support the legislation.”

Reconciliation has been used 19 times since 1980. 12 of those times the procedure was used to pass omnibus budget bills that had an overwhelming support in the Senate. Only on 2 occasions the budget bills were controversial enough to lack bipartisan support.

“I hope that my fellow candidates will join my effort. This is one of the most important legislative fights in our lifetime. Our differences on other issues should be put aside to send the strongest message possible to the incumbent who is listens more to Harry Reid than the people of Maryland. It is time to put Maryland first. No on reconciliation,” said Amedori.

Amedori thinks that her fellow Republican candidates are not focused on the here and now with the circulation of the unity pledge. “We are facing a massive government takeover of health care and they are talking about unity after the Primary. Let’s be united on an issue that matters,” added Amedori.

I am a candidate for the US Senate because, like you, I am sick and tired of the Big Government in our wallets. Like you, I am sick and tired of the wasteful spending inside the beltway. It is time to send the incumbents home. It is time to have new ideas and fresh blood to help return the government to the side of We The People.

I was born and raised in Baltimore until age 15, at which time my family moved to Baltimore County. I have resided in Carroll County for 30 years. Before entering politics, I was employed as a journalist with The Baltimore Sun and The Carroll County Times, while raising two children.

From 1999 thru 2004, I had the honor to represent the citizens of Carroll County in the MD House of Delegates and served the entire time on the Judiciary Committee. During my tenure, I was Deputy Minority Whip and Assistant Minority Leader.

Reconciliation has been used 19 times since 1980. 12 of those times the procedure was used to pass omnibus budget bills that had an overwhelming support in the Senate. Only on 2 occasions the budget bills were controversial enough to lack bipartisan support.

“I am launching this online effort to send a message to our Senator that Marylanders don’t want Obamacare forced down our throats and that she should vote against reconciliation,” state Amedori. “A national mandate is not a way to make health care more affordable.”

Amedori believes that a health care reform package must include tort reform, associated health plans, rules that allow people to purchase health insurance across state lines, more emphasis on health savings accounts and a method for allowing people with pre-existing conditions to purchase insurance coverage.

Amedori believes that as the next United States Senator she can do a better job for the people of Maryland. She wants to Maryland First ahead of political partisanship. “It is time we had a Senator focused on results rather than political gamesmanship. As a former member of the House Delegates, I know how to make a difference. Barbara has had 24 years and now is the time for new leadership,” added Amedori.

(Westminster, MD) Today, Carmen Amedori, Republican candidate for United States Senate in Maryland, commented on President Obama’s bipartisan health care summit by stating that the plan must address costs in order to increase availability across the nation.

“It’s the costs! It’s the costs! It’s the costs! In a perfect world no one would ever get sick and everyone would have insurance just in case. But in the real world, skyrocketing costs are forcing Marylanders to make hard choices. By mandating people to get health insurance, you are not driving down the costs. Just look at what happened in Massachusetts when they mandated coverage but yet they did not address cost issues. Within the first two years, insurance premiums increased 50% and they are going up again this year. Their insurance premiums have increased faster than the rest of the nation,” said Amedori.

Amedori believes that a reform package must include tort reform, associated health plans, rules that allow people to purchase health insurance across state lines, and more emphasis on health savings accounts. Moreover, she believes if Congress could just agree on one reform it should be to allow people with pre-existing conditions to purchase insurance coverage.

Absent from today’s summit was Senator Barbara Mikulski. Only Congressman Steny Hoyer from Maryland was invited which has many people wondering how effective Mikulski is.
