Does the NFL have a women problem? - The Washington Post

Does the NFL have a women problem? - The Washington Post: By Cindy Boren July 24

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/early-lead/wp/2014/07/24/does-the-nfl-have-a-women-problem/

Does the NFL have a women problem? - The Washington Post:
"The NFL sent a message with its latest disciplinary move, suspending
Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice because of a domestic incident that it
deems to be a violation of its personal conduct policy. Unfortunately, the
recipients of Commissioner Roger Goodell’s message are women. Rice was
suspended the first two games of the season after a February incident in which
he allegedly knocked his then-fiancée unconscious in the elevator of an
Atlantic City casino.
...

The suspension sparked an instant and heated debate over how
the league dishes out punishment, given that drug violations typically draw
longer suspensions.

It particularly resonated poorly with women, sending the
wrong message just as NFL viewership among them is at a high and when the
league is, once again, openly courting the audience of women and their
financial clout.

They’re also dangerous, with Scarborough Research finding
that women represent approximately 45 percent of the NFL’s fans and almost 33
percent of the its viewing audience, based on Nielsen data reported by Sports
Business Daily last fall. Women, Ann Bastianelli of Indiana University’s Kelley
School of Business told ESPNW, make 70 percent of “important family decisions.”

After risque years, Super Bowl commercials go warm and fuzzy (Watch them here) | Sports | ADN.com

"Almost everyone seemed relieved that the first cold-weather Super Bowl played outdoors was not an ice bowl. As for the advertising extravaganza that took place during the game, it turned out to be a nice bowl."

Most of the commercials that Fox broadcast nationally during Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday sought to invoke fuzzy feelings that would warm the cockles of consumer hearts, if not MetLife Stadium. The television and social media audiences were exhorted repeatedly to forget their troubles and put on a smiley face.

Cheerleader-to-soldier: Philly Eagles girl turns in pom-poms for rifle - Washington Times

Cheerleader-to-soldier: Philly Eagles girl turns in pom-poms for rifle - Washington Times

-
The Washington Times
Friday, December 20, 2013

Rachel Washburn, 25, was a cheerleader with the Philadelphia Eagles when she decided a career shift was in order. So she traded in her pom-poms and signed on the dotted Army contract line — and she’s since been serving as an intelligence officer with a special ops combat unit in Afghanistan.

She just returned from her second tour, and is set to receive a “Hometown Hero” honor ceremony at Sunday’s Eagles game at home against the Chicago Bears. Part of her overseas strengths comes from the fact she’s able to interact with village women at a different level than her male soldier counterparts — even helping one deliver a baby during a massive snowstorm, USA Today reported.

Tax liability sacks the NFL's top players | The Daily Caller

Tax liability sacks the NFL's top players | The Daily Caller:

Matt Blumenfeld, Freelance Writer

http://dailycaller.com/2013/08/26/tax-liability-sacks-the-nfls-top-players/

"With the NFL’s regular season set to begin next week, players around the league anxiously await the arrival of their first big game check of the season. For many rookies, who collect signing bonuses well before the season begins, their first check signifies what they hope to be a profitable and prosperous career on and off the field. This season’s NFL rookies, however, will be shocked to find out that the earnings for their first few games might as well be handed over to tax collectors – a fact of which veteran players are all too aware." ... http://dailycaller.com/2013/08/26/tax-liability-sacks-the-nfls-top-players/

Baltimore football championship seasons have always started in Westminster ... so should we be worried?

Many Carroll County residents are getting a case of nostalgic Super Bowl fever as they look forward to Sunday's AFC championship contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots.

For more than 120 years — since football debuted at then-Western Maryland College on Oct. 31, 1891 — football has been a part of the history of Carroll County.

Not to be overlooked is the fact that since July 1949, Baltimore football teams have held summer practice in Westminster. Names like Raymond Berry, Jim Parker, Art Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Lenny Moore, Eugene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, Alan Ameche, and Wilbur (Weeb) Ewbank, just to mention a few, have become an important part of our Carroll County cultural history.

And yes, there is also that quarterback that was cut by the Pittsburg Steelers in 1956.

What was his name? Oh yeah, right. Johnny Unitas.

Unbelievable. According to an old history of the Baltimore Colts in my files, "Unitas was cut by… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0122-20120119,0,3298374.story

Baltimore football and Westminster have a long history together By Kevin Dayhoff

Certainly many people were disappointed when the Baltimore Ravens announced Dec. 2 that the team will not be returning to its McDaniel College summer training camp.

In a Carroll Eagle article that day on ExploreCarroll.com, Westminster Mayor Utz spoke for many, "It's almost a 50-year tradition that's being broken… That's the sad part about it."

The tradition and history of Baltimore football and Westminster first began when the newspaper announced ran on Feb. 11, 1949, "College Campus To Be Used By Colts … Coach Isbell Expects to Bring 55 Players to Train, Starting in July … Baltimore's football Colts are going to train at Western Maryland College this year."

Kevin Dayhoff – The Tentacle: Ravens Strike at Westminster’s Heart

Wednesday, December 7, 2011

Kevin E. Dayhoff

Last Friday the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League announced that the team will not be returning to McDaniel College in Westminster for summer camp, breaking a tradition that dates back to 1949.

[…]

The ExploreCarroll.com article also took note of the owner of the Raven’s, Steve Bisciotti, ties to Westminster. He was quoted as saying that “some of my best memories as a kid are my family's visits to the Colts' training camp in Westminster…”

More on that in a moment, first a little history.

Baltimore football in Carroll County is an intergenerational dynamic that goes back to just a few years after World War II.

Football in Baltimore can trace its lineage to the All-America Football Conference in 1946 and another lineage to the NFL in 1944, according to multiple media sources, my old childhood Baltimore Colts files, from research in 2004 when I found an excellent article on the net, “Life Before Indianapolis: A History of the Baltimore Colts.”

(CBS/AP)  October 10, 2011
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Hank Williams Jr. is about to have his say.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/10/10/sports/main20118058.shtml?tag=stack
Williams' has cut a new song "I'll Keep My ...," calling out "Fox & Friends" and ESPN after an interview last week on the Fox News talk show led to the end of his association with the sports network and "Monday Night Football," long home to his "Are you ready for some football?" theme.
He's also scheduled to appear on "The View" and "Hannity" on Tuesday to discuss the uproar that sprung up after he made an analogy that President Barack Obama and House Speaker Rep. John Boehner golfing together was like Nazi leader Adolph Hitler and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu playing a round.
ESPN decided to pull Williams' intro from last Monday's "MNF" telecast after the comments and the move became permanent Thursday when both sides said they'd decided to pull the spot.

New York Times: N.F.L. Chooses New York-New Jersey For 2014 Super Bowl Site

The New York Times Tue, May 25, 2010
-----
N.F.L. Chooses New York-New Jersey For 2014 Super Bowl Site

National Football League owners, lured by playing the sport's
biggest game on the largest stage, combined with the promise
that snow would not grind the event to a halt, awarded the
2014 Super Bowl to New York on Tuesday afternoon, making the
New Meadowlands Stadium the host of what will be the first
cold-weather Super Bowl.

The New York-New Jersey bid beat out proposals from Tampa,
Fla., and South Florida -- two traditional hosts -- in part
to reward the Giants and the Jets for building a new
billion-dollar stadium together, a tactic the N.F.L. has used
when they have placed the game in Detroit, Dallas and
Indianapolis.

Investigative Voice SUNDAY OPINION: COMMISSIONER CENSURES QUARTERBACK - Takes bold step toward ‘a higher standard’

Investigative Voice SUNDAY OPINION: COMMISSIONER CENSURES QUARTERBACK - Takes bold step toward ‘a higher standard’

By —Alan Z. Forman Sunday, 25 April 2010

ROLE MODELS BY DEFAULT

Like it or not, celebrities are role models. Fans identify with them, teenagers emulate them. Children long to grow up to be like them. They are praised, loved, envied, glorified. Virtually everyone wants to trade places with them and to be their friend. They can associate with thugs, shoot themselves in the foot; torture dogs, cheat on their spouses, abuse their mates. Grammy winners run back to them, fans forgive them, franchises re-hire them. For some, they can do no wrong. Some of them can even get away with allegedly raping their dates.

Not so this week.

National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell has made what will no doubt be considered by many fans to be a highly unpopular move: suspending two-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for six games, at a cost to the star player of more than $2.8 million in salary. After all…

Carroll County Times News Update: NFL Playoffs: Jets Upset Colts

NFL Playoffs: Jets Upset Colts, Vikings take care of Cowboys Posted 9:15 p.m.

San Diego – Maybe Rex Ryan already knows the score of the AFC championship game, too.

I was fortunate enough to pull this screen grab off the Carroll County Times web site minutes after the Times’ staff discovered it and minutes before they pulled it.

Off course I have never-ever made a mistake in my copy. Well, maybe not. My favorite was the time I wrote Paul of Taurus – err, um, instead of Paul of Tarsus…

Anyway, it seems that right after the Times’ staff discovered it, they decided to have some fun with it just before they pulled it.

Too funny. I happen to like folks who can roll with it. For those who are not aware, the Carroll County Times has one of the best sports departments and sports reporters in the Mid-Atlantic region… Bookmark and check it out: http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/sports/

However, as good as its sports reporters are; I am not under the impression that they can see into the future. Or maybe they can?

Of course, they could always use a few more semi-colons…

The Carroll County Times does a really good job of posting news updates on their site frequently during the day. It is really smart web management on their part.

I’d love to know the rest of the story as to the news feed with the incorrect headline…

Apparently, it was also linked to a news story with the incorrect headline also. But I wasn’t quick enough to grab it.

Meanwhile we certainly hope they kept the headline copy available for next week’s Jets versus the Colts game. I sure do not want the Colts to win and would love to see the Jets do it again; as they did when they beat the Colts 29-15 on Sunday, December 27, 2009…

If you will recall, that was the game when the headline from an AP article said it all, “Caldwell pulls starters in third with 5-point lead; Jets rally for win.” http://espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=291227011; when “The first-year coach (Jim Caldwell) pulled Manning & Co. with a 15-10 lead and 5:36 left in the third quarter.”

The upset spoiled the chances of the Colts from having a perfect season, and ended “the Colts' pursuit of perfection and their NFL-record 23-game winning streak with a 29-15 victory that had fans serenading Lucas Oil Stadium with boos and Manning, the three-time MVP, offering support for his coach's decision.”

The “Fast Facts” in the article explained:

“Peyton Manning was removed from the lineup in the third quarter with the Colts up 15-10. The Jets then scored 19 unanswered points to snap the Colts' 23-game regular season win streak.

“The Colts had fewer than 100 rushing yards for the fourth straight game; they have failed to reach the mark in 12 of 15 games this season.

“Peyton Manning (14 for 21, 192 yards) became the fourth player in NFL history with 50,000 passing yards for his career.”

Whatever. We should have been so lucky as to have had such a disappointment here in Baltimore with the Ravens.
