Apple designer's court testimony recalls birth of iPhone | PCWorld

Apple designer's court testimony recalls birth of iPhone | PCWorld

"Martyn Williams Apr 4, 2014 "The roots of the iPhone can be traced to many corners of Apple’s campus in Cupertino, California, but a Silicon Valley courtroom on Friday heard how some of the most recognizable software features came from a team working in a dark, dirty, windowless room with special security to keep others out.

The story of the iPhone’s software design was related by Greg Christie, an Apple vice president and software designer, as part of Apple’s patent infringement case against Samsung. Christie is one of the inventors listed on the patent for the “slide to unlock” function, which is one of the patents in question in Apple’s lawsuit against Samsung, on trial in the U.S. District Court in San Jose, California.

Rejoice! The Start menu is coming back to Windows | PCWorld

Rejoice! The Start menu is coming back to Windows | PCWorld: "
Brad Chacos @BradChacos Apr 2, 2014"
You heard right, devout desktop lovers: The Start menu is coming back to Windows, Microsoft operating system head Terry Myerson announced at Build on Wednesday.

The details are hazy, aside from the fact that it's going to be pushed to all Windows 8.1 users as an update at some point in the future. But it's a-coming—though it's not quite the Start menu you're familiar with. Beyond the traditional mouse-friendly features, the Windows 8.1 Start menu will be crammed with Live Tiles, along with the ability to find and install Microsoft's universal Windows apps, also announced Wednesday.

Apple retires Snow Leopard from support, leaves 1 in 5 Macs vulnerable to attacks

Apple retires Snow Leopard from support, leaves 1 in 5 Macs vulnerable to attacks

Twice now that Apple's bypassed Snow Leopard when it patched newer editions
Gregg Keizer

Apple on Tuesday made it clear that it will no longer patch OS X 10.6, aka Snow Leopard, when it again declined to offer a security update for the four-and-a-half-year-old operating system.

As Apple issued an update for Mavericks, or OS X 10.9, as well as for its two predecessors, Mountain Lion (10.8) and Lion (10.7), Apple had nothing for Snow Leopard or its owners yesterday.

Snow Leopard was also ignored in December, when Apple patched Safari 6 and 7 for newer editions of OS X, but did not update Safari 5.1.10, the most-current Apple browser for the OS.

How To Fix The "You need permission to perform this action." Error On Windows

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC3jHe3IYXQ

The "You need permission to perform this action" error message in the Microsoft Windows 7 and 8 operating systems is a horrible-horrible problem.

One wonders why Microsoft does not fix it? Folders and files of which I had routine and easy access in the past are often and unexpectedly unavailable to me now that I am using Windows 7. It is totally nuts...

This video was quite helpful... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC3jHe3IYXQ

Windows 8 adoption slows; boost sought with update | PCWorld

Windows 8 adoption slows; boost sought with update | PCWorld: "By Computerworld staff, Computerworld

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2045884/windows-8-adoption-slows-boost-sought-with-update.html#tk.nl_today

Windows 8's user share growth slowed significantly in July, hinting at further trouble for the struggling operating system, new statistics from an analytics company show.

The operating system's user share grew by the smallest month-over-month amount since its launch in October 2012, said Web measurement vendor Net Applications. At the end of July, Windows 8 accounted for 5.9 percent of all systems running Windows, an increase of three-tenths of a percentage point compared to June.

From November 2012 through July 2013, Windows 8's user share grew by an average of six-tenths of a point each month, with lows in February and April of five-tenths and a high in June of nine-tenths of a percentage point.

July's increase was about a third of June's." ...

In fact, bank robberies across the U.S. have plummeted from 9,400 in 1991 to just 3,870 last year. As Doug Johnson of the American Bankers Association puts it: "As more and more transactions become electronic, more bank crimes become electronic."

Migrating to Windows 8 by Kevin E. Dayhoff June 12, 2013 www.TheTentacle.com

My latest experience with Microsoft has left me with the technological equivalent of post-traumatic stress disorder. In the last six-months I have migrated light years from the Microsoft Windows XP operating system to Windows 8. It was not easy.

I’m told the twitching and the nightmares will stop with the passage of time and copious amounts of coffee. When I finally pulled the plug on my old laptop for the last time, I had this awful feeling in the pit of my stomach as if I had just taken a loved-one off of life support.

That feeling was quickly replaced by the sheer terror of dealing with an improved computer system in which I could no longer easily perform so many of the functions I had executed effortlessly in the previous, now obsolete, system.

The Microsoft Windows operating systems have been a major force in the modern-era of technology and personal computing. The roots of the software system date back to 1981, although the first version, Windows 1.0 was not available for consumer use until late in 1985.

One of the most popular and widely used systems in history has been the Windows XP system, which was introduced in August 2001, and dominated the market until Windows 7 (released in 2009,) overtook it in August 2012. Windows 8 was released in October 2012.

Dump Internet Explorer until Microsoft issues patch, security experts warn

If you use Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8 or 9 as your default browser on a Windows PC, security experts are advising you to use a different Web browser until Microsoft patches a critical vulnerability in IE. Microsoft on Monday confirmed that hackers were actively exploiting an IE vulnerability that could allow an attacker to take over your PC. The exploit does not affect users running IE10 on the Windows 8 Release Preview.

The exploit was made public on security firm Rapid7's Metasploit Project and first discovered in the wild by security researcher Eric Romang. Metasploit is advising users to dump IE until Microsoft issues a security update. The new IE security flaw was developed by the same group that created the recent Java zero day flaw, according to Metasploit.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer makes up about 48.75 percent of active Web browsers worldwide, according to Net Market Share…http://www.pcworld.com/article/2010031/dump-internet-explorer-until-microsoft-issues-patch-security-experts-warn.html#tk.nl_pcwbest

Mashable Business: Apple to Spend $45 Billion on Dividend and Share Buyback

March 19, 2012 by Stan Schroeder

Ahead of today’s call, Apple has announced it plans to initiate a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share sometime in the fourth quarter of its fiscal 2012, which starts July 1, 2012.

Furthermore, the company will start a $10 billion share repurchasing program, starting in Apple’s fiscal 2013, which starts on September 30, 2012.

This means Apple will spend approximately $45 billion of its cash reserves on dividends and share buyback in the first three years of these new programs…http://mashable.com/2012/03/19/apple-dividend/

The Consumerist: Man's 400 Minutes In Dell Hell Could Cost Them Millions

Man's 400 Minutes In Dell Hell Could Cost Them Millions

By pissing off this one customer, Dell may have lost millions of dollars. Bill is a corporate account holder and a consultant who makes recommendations to Fortune 500 companies on how to spend their IT money. Usually he recommends Dell, but after his trip to Dell Hell, that will no longer be the case.
He ordered a laptop from Dell for his business and it was dead on arrival. After lots of typical back and forth with typically incompetent Indian customer service reps - though one notable moment was when the tech screamed "NO!" and hung up the phone when Bill asked to speak to a manager - he finally got his replacement approved and he shipped it out via FedEx.
UPDATE:

Dell Makes Good For Man Whose Life They Wasted 400 Minutes Of

After Bill's story of spending 400 minutes in Dell Hell to get his dead laptop replaced went up on Consumerist, Dell gave him a call...  http://consumerist.com/2011/06/dell-tries-to-make-good-for-man-whose-life-they-wasted-400-minutes-of.html

About Today: 5 Ways to Cool off Your Laptop

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
I'm pretty sure my laptop is trying to kill me. It is, as my mother used to say, hotter than the hinges outside right now, and yet my portable computer beast insists on trying to melt my skirt to my legs. I think we can all agree that this is unnecessary.

Is Your Laptop Too Hot?
How hot is too hot, though? Exactly when does your toasty laptop go from being the world's most annoying digital heating pad, and become an actual problem?

Why Do Laptops Overheat?
I can never figure out why my laptop gets so hot in the first place. It's not as if there's a tiny printing press in there, minting websites by the dozen.

5 Ways to Make a Hot Laptop Cooler
Before I read this piece, I assumed my only option was to put my laptop on pillow. It turns out, there's plenty you can do to cool it down.

8 Tips for Using Laptops in Hot Weather
The weather outside makes the weather under my laptop seem all the more unbearable. Fortunately, it turns out I don't need those ice-pack pants after all.
