Wi-Fi Report Card: Which Airlines Keep You Connected the Best?:

https://www.yahoo.com/travel/wi-fi-report-card-how-well-are-the-airlines-109206613732.html

Sid Lipsey January 26, 2015

"For Internet-addicted business travelers, an in-flight announcement that “Wi-Fi is down at the moment” is enough to induce the shakes. And getting booked on a flight that doesn’t offer Wi-Fi at all is enough to send them into fits of rage.

Fortunately, a new study finds plugged-in road warriors had less reason to panic over their in-flight connectivity last year. And 2015 looks even better." https://www.yahoo.com/travel/wi-fi-report-card-how-well-are-the-airlines-109206613732.html

The Zombie Network: Beware 'Free Public WiFi' by TRAVIS LARCHUK

The Zombie Network: Beware 'Free Public WiFi'

It's in your airports, your coffee shops and your libraries: "Free Public WiFi."
Despite its enticing name, the network, available in thousands of locations across the United States, does not actually provide access to the Internet. But like a virus, it has spread — and may even be lurking on your computer right now.
Wireless security expert Joshua Wright first noticed it about four years ago at an airport.
"I went to connect to an available wireless network and I saw this option, Free Public WiFi," he remembers. "As I looked more and more, I saw this in more and more locations. And I was aware from my job and analysis in the field that this wasn't a sanctioned, provisioned wireless network, but it was actually something rogue."
Free Public WiFi isn't set up like most wireless networks people use to get to the Internet. Instead, it's an "ad hoc" network — meaning when a user selects it, he or she isn't connecting to a router or hot spot, but rather directly to someone else's computer in the area.
Though it doesn't actually provide Internet access, the network has spread across the country thanks to an old Windows XP bug... http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130451369&sc=nl&cc=es-20101017

War driving in Nags Head NC – The Scream

War driving in Nags Head NC – The Scream
October 10 – 19, 2008
http://www.kevindayhoff.net/

I spent the week of October 10-19, 2008 in Nags Head on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in a unit that did not have internet access. To find wireless service, we had to go war driving. It was maddening.

I’m back home now – and I’m fine. Really I am. I’m told the twitching will stop soon…

Study: Music, tech search terms riskiest

June 4th, 2007

I wish that I had saved the article – but I ran across an article not too long ago that essentially explained that “yesterday’s trauma is today’s routine” with regard to being bothered by spam and viruses, malicious code and insidious spyware.

It, as I remember, explained that technology is catching up with preventing such attacks on our computers…

Maybe yes, maybe no. With many of my colleagues, dealing spam and viruses and such is still quite a headache and I can only imagine is still costing individuals and businesses a great deal of time and money.

I don’t know the answer. I guess the cyber-world of technology is reflective of the “real” world, whatever that is, and “stuff” is going to happen.

I just wish we could get a better grip on handling it…

Anyway, I came across this article, below, that I wanted to share. I have noticed that often it is the very young and the much older technology users that often will end up with their computers all gummed-up.

Older folks are relatively incredulous that “someone would want to do that.” And the younger folks are naive and inexperienced…

But the article, to which I refer to below, perhaps explains another reason why young folks end-up with their computers all gummed-up; music searches…

Read the entire article… The other troubling matter that seems to persist, is the perception that too many of the ads contain problems… It is extremely important that we get a handle on this, as revenue from ads is an important component to sustaining the web… and Wi-Fi...

Study: Music, tech search terms riskiest

By ANICK JESDANUN, AP Internet Writer Mon Jun 4, 2007

Search terms related to music and technology are most likely to return sites with spyware and other malicious code, a new study finds.

[…]

In many cases, the programs come bundled with adware and toolbars McAfee considers unwanted, according to McAfee's "The State of Search Engine Safety" report, scheduled for release Monday.

Nonetheless, McAfee found it slightly safer to use search engines overall. Although about 4 percent of search results lead to sites deemed risky, that's down from 5 percent a year ago.

[…]

Risks are greater when clicking on keyword ads that make up much of search companies' revenues: According to McAfee, 7 percent of such links produce risky sites, down from 8.5 percent a year ago.

[…]

Search companies have taken steps to mitigate the risks. Google, for instance, sometimes flags links to sites it deems risky, and McAfee found a notable drop in risk when using Google, AOL and Ask.

20070423 Wi-Fi comes to London’s financial district

Wi-Fi comes to London’s financial district

April 23rd, 2007 Hat Tip: Saboteur

Switch on for Square Mile wi-fi

By Rory Cellan-Jones, Technology correspondent, BBC News

The mesh network covers London's financial district

The City of London has fired up its first mesh wi-fi network, promising net access from just about anywhere in the Square Mile.

The area in London is not just Europe's leading financial centre - it is said to be the continent's most advanced wireless network too.

That is the claim made by the network's creator The Cloud and by the City of London Corporation which has backed it.

There are 127 nodes on lamp posts giving access to 350,000 people.

The City of London Corporation believes it will be invaluable to traders, bankers and brokers who want access to their data when they are on the move - or out at lunch.

[…]

Public wi-fi networks, free and paid-for, are spreading quickly, but there are mixed reports on just how much they are being used. Some believe the more advanced Wimax technology is the real answer to open-air internet access.

So the City of London's network will provide a major test of whether the public really wants to surf on the move - and whether there is any money to be made from it.

20060914 KDDC Wi Fi comes to Toronto Canada

Wi-Fi comes to Toronto Canada – When is it coming to Carroll County?

September 14th, 2006

City News CP 24 has an article from September 6th, 2006 about Wi-Fi coming to Toronto

I would love to see Carroll County officials get behind a similar effort here.

Many in Carroll County would also like to see an alternative cable provider in the county. Perhaps as a part of those discussions, Wi-Fi could be a part of the negotiations?

In the near future, Wi-Fi will be considered a basic infrastructure necessity and the sooner it comes to Carroll County the quicker that we can get ahead of the curve and increase our economic development competitiveness.

We certainly have the expertise in Carroll County.

For a previous post about Wi-Fi see: “20060819 KDDC Wi Fi for Carroll County.”

Toronto Goes Wireless In Downtown Core

Wednesday September 6, 2006

Toronto's downtown core has gone wireless.

Toronto Hydro rolled out the city's free Wi-Fi - or wireless Internet access - Wednesday morning. The service will be free for six months - and will allow people wireless access to the World Wide Web throughout the downtown rather than solely at pre-existing Wi-Fi hotspots, generally cafes and restaurants.

The project is the largest of its kind in North America, and Mayor David Miller is enthusiastic it'll be successful.

The signal will be available from Jarvis St. in the east to Spadina Ave. in the west, and from Front St. to the south, north as far as Bloor St. Customers will also be able to make phone calls over the Internet and, in time, watch video.”

It is a long article and has an informative Q and A. Read the rest of the article here. Additional info - - “Toronto Wi-Fi Zone Frequently Asked Questions, courtesy www.onezone.ca

20060821 The Howard County Gang of Four

The Howard County Gang of Four
August 21, 2006

Howard County Bloggers host an on-line county forum for the upcoming elections.

The Baltimore Sun article by Larry Carson that Crablaw first called to my attention: Local bloggers play political role” was published Sunday, August 20. 2006. Of all the Sun’s writers, I appreciate Mr. Carson’s work.

You may wanna be sure to read Crablaw’s observations.

David Keelan at HoCoBlog observes: “Local bloggers play political role.”

And that is as far as I have had time, so far today to graze my colleague’s site… Maybe more later? Meanwhile, other work is going to interfere to my life on the net…

I first mentioned the “Gang of Four’s” participation in the election here.

HoCo Hayduke reports, “In case you haven't heard, the Gang of Four (Local Bloggers) will be sponsoring an on-line candidate forum for most local elections beginning in October. More details here.”

Actually, the author of the HoCoMD Blog kindly emailed me the press release earlier today. Thanks.

This is a great opportunity for Howard County voters and a perfect role for the four blogs: HoCoMD Blog; The Hedgehog Report; HoCo Hayduke; and Howard County Blog.

The first three paragraphs of Mr. Carson’s article are:

Candidates' forums can be inconvenient -- and lengthy -- to attend, but a politically diverse group of Howard County bloggers is planning an electronic question-and-answer session for the general election that voters can use when and how they please.

Although Republicans David Keelan and Dave Wissing and Democrats Ian Kennedy and Evan Coren do not share the same political philosophy, they all started local blogs based on politics or development, and they eventually connected and decided to collaborate.

They appear to have achieved a level of civility in short supply in Washington or Annapolis these days.

A sampling of posts on KDDC that are Howard County oriented are:

20060819 KDDC Wi Fi for Carroll County

Wi-Fi for Carroll County

August 19th, 2006 by Kevin Dayhoff

Although getting a conversation about Wi-Fi for Carroll County among the candidates for political office in this fall’s Carroll County elections has failed to get any traction, apparently it is being discussed as a campaign issue in our neighbor to the south, Howard County.

As I was grazing the blogs of my colleagues in Howard County, I came across this excellent post by Evan on the Howard County Blog: “Wi-Fi.”

In my column for the Westminster Eagle, I have written two pieces specifically on Wi-Fi, which has received enthusiastic response from readers, however, hardly a peep out of the candidates. (09/07/05 - If technology available, why not Wi-Fi? And 08/02/06 -Building ramps to information highway will pave the way to Carroll's future)

As a matter of fact, I am seeing little of substance out of many the candidates for office in Carroll County except a lot of bile.

Issues such as managing growth and development are being discussed as well as taxes. These issues are important – especially, well – both. I mean, it is imperative that we maintain a well-thought-out approach to growth in order to maintain what quality of life we have left in Carroll County.

Diversification of the tax base and over-all tax relief is also an important subject.

However, I’m seeing little conversation about growing our commercial and industrial tax base and most importantly – attracting jobs to Carroll County.

I have as little interest in more houses in Carroll County as the next person, however, that limited and well managed growth approach must not disallow appropriate business and employment base growth. Unfortunately that is just what is happening.

Of course, one of the best ways to thwart further erosion of our quality of life is to look for ways to support the business of agriculture in Carroll County and I’m not seeing much of that conversation either.

In the near future, if it is not already here, the issue of Wi-Fi will be a critical infrastructure, quality of life and business development issue in Carroll County.

A Columbia Flyer editorial on August 3rd, 2006, states accurately and succinctly:

“Like running water, electricity and cable television before it, wireless Internet capability will soon be widely considered a part of living and doing business in American communities.

Some day in the not-too-distant future, it'll likely be a utility that people take for granted.

Communities that don't have it will find themselves at a competititve disadvantage for attracting and retaining business and keeping residents happy.

So it's good to see that the three candidates for county executive all realize that and support efforts to lay the groundwork for widespread Wi-Fi in Howard. (emphasis mine)

Officials will have to find the answers to two pressing questions: What's required, and at what cost? The sooner they can accomplish that, the better.

But, make no mistake, this technology is coming. And in a few years, we'll probably be wondering how we lived without it.”

Read it again. This time, every time you see the word “Howard,” replace it with the word “Carroll.”

I did a search on “Wi-Fi” on the Westminster Eagle’s web site and came up with:
