VATICAN CITY — The cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church
elected a new pope Wednesday to succeed Benedict XVI.
White smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel,
signaling the election and prompting a throng gathered in St. Peter’s Square to
erupt in applause and cheers. The new leader of the world’s 1.2 billion
Catholics will be revealed shortly when he appears in public for the first
time.
